Do you sign your Credit Card? ( Archived) (19)

Sep 26, 2008 10:24 AM CST Do you sign your Credit Card?
The advice from credit card companies is to sign the back of your card as soon as you get it. Personally, I think this is probably the worst advice you could get. Here's why.

Suppose you lose your wallet or worse somebody steals it, in any case it winds up in the hands of a thief. If your card is unsigned, the thief has no clue what your signiture looks like unless you've also lost some other ID such as a drivers license or passport. in the case of a credit card it's a good idea to always sign receipts with either your first initial or a shortened name such as Liz if your name is Elizabeth or Mike if your name is Michael etc. The credit card co will have a long record of how you sign your name and if someone starts making purchases on your stolen card and uses Elizabeth or Michael it will be evidence that it wasn't you who bought that new computer or jet ski. Think about it, what is the purpose of a signiture on a credit card? So some 18 year old girl on the check out line can verify your ID, like she's gonna really be trained to spot a bogus signiture? Only a hand writing expert will be able to determine who signed or didn't sign that receipt.

A lot of places in the world still don't have PIN verifiers. Also, sometimes they break down.

In these instances the old-fashioned way of signing a chit that may be checked against the signature on the card is still used.

If you don't sign your credit card, the thief puts their own signature on it and uses it at these places.

Best bet is to not have a credit card at all. I realise it's difficult in some instances to not have one, such as rentals, bookings and online purchases, but there are other ways around itroll eyes

That's very true, I still use cheques and will
not bank on line.

But using a credit card for larger purchases
gives you extra protection if something goes wrong.

I write "Please ask for ID" on the back of each of mine. But actually, very few places take notice to it.

Another idea I read about, is instead of your signature on the back...write in the same line: "Ask For Picture ID".

That has actually happened to me exactly once in 19 years of using a CC. A manager came over and appologised and said if I produce a photo ID they would accept my card. I put the item I was buying on the counter and walked out.
Question: When was the last time a pump at a gas station asked you to show ID when buying gas?
Even at Walmart if you pay with a CC YOU swipe the card and the checkout person doesn't even look at it much less scutinize your signiture.
A signed credit card only makes it more difficult to prove that you didn't make the purchase after your card was used by an un-authorized person.

If you don't want to sign your card, then don't. But NEVER leave the space blank. If I stole your card, all I have to do is sign your name and guess what, the signature on the receipt and on the card now match.

No questions asked. If they question why a girl is named "Micheal", you just say "my parents wanted a boy".

Just write something in that space. "Please see ID is best". Plus, no bank is going to verify signature on every single card purchase. With the billions of charges made, their are not enough hours in the day to verify signatures.

I do this also, but have been told at a few places that they will not except it if there is no signature. Meanwhile, some co. tell us to put CID if you want to people to really look @ your ID and verify that it is you. Wish they would make up their minds.doh

Here in France, all credit cards have a chip inserted, so you don't need a signiture..You use the same code as the hole in the wall...

..Although back home in Ireland you still sign..

Also, another thought popped up. I don't always sign my name the same way any how. I have such a long one and the spaces are so short; it really depends upon how much of a perfectionist I feel that day. Even if I feel a little lazy and all my signature will be entirely different from one signing to the next. wink But then I am a little off kilter. grin

That's true but you are asked for the security numbers on the back of your card... without them the transactions are invalid..

and

ALWAYS sign your credit cards... if stolen report immediately...banks will cancel card by phone instructions..
