How great you are the mighty lion's tooth Emerging through the mottled winter kill Bursts into life so many blooms of youth Lying your yellow carpet down the rill
In these longer hours for daylight to pass Just below the ridge running wild with ease Happens at once the snowdrift melts alas Change mindless dullards into swarming bees
A springtime welcome sign like no other Gives up sweet nector make hives of honey Such a gift to give our earthly mother Greater your gold than glitter of money
When your aging blooms turn to hollow globes Watching wind blow your parachuted robes

About this poem:
The dandelion is a flower that I admire. It reflects brightly upon my youth. We would pluck it many flowers answering such important questions of the day like ''she's loves me or she love's me not"....or link its stems together into proud necklaces. It reminds of how something so simple and yet so common (enough to be called an invasive, noxious weed by 'The Purists') can also be so useful and colorful and welcomed by many other creatures..including me for making some delicious wine that I use mostly for cooking and also tenderizing meat.

I figured out before I read it that this would be a sonnet. It is also a super natural history lesson... A very fine write Yankee.

M.MA beautiful Sonnet Yankee and an interesting choice you made,i'm quite familiar with your choice...thanks for sharing and thanks again for the challenge
Yes the mighty danelion. so I take it you are saying you are sweet as honey Everyones poems have been so visual in my head. I do not know if it is the topic or the writers that has let loose my imagination. But I have enjoyed the many readings. And yes I see you. You mighty lion running wild with ease
Dandelions are always cut down as most people do not like them. You found beauty within them for all to see. Thank you from me. Have a great day.

How can any flower be common....you made it majestic.....and I remembered an elderly lady with her crochet, sitting in her tiny garden telling me all about the humble dandelion.....I would have been about 7.......thanks for the memory...Kathy
Your beautiful sonnet brought me back so many warm memories! I was captivated by the beauty of dandelions from the moment I was able to pick a flower. So much so that I use to water them in our garden amidst my mother's stern orders "Kathy, that's just a weed, pluck 'em". In the end I was given a pot to plant my dandelion. Then history repeated itself...my brother did the same and so did my eldest daughter...lol! I wish they never wither and spore...that's the only thing I don't like about them. Thanks you for your challenge and for sharing your poem with us..and really appreciate you comments...

well yankee you picked the flower that is not sold. Yes the root makes tea supposed to help with arthritis, my gran used to say the tea of leaves given to people with water retention helped the condition (hence pittley beds) we are just given synthetic tabs these days may I go on- the milk from the stem of the flower covered over a wart was supposed to make it drop off. I think this made a membrane over wart they have to breathe to survive but belief too is a stong healer. So besides looking great in fields they are very versitle Wonderful poem wonderful challenge

A wonderful sonnet! and a Dandelion was one I too was thinking of to write :) I often enjoy Dandelion Tea with a dash of honey.. very refreshing and as Redex said great for those that may suffer with inflammation or water retention. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for all the wonderful comments and interesting things about dandelions...Hmmmm I only remember hearing that rubbing a dandelion under your chin will tell you if you're in love if the pollen sticks to your skin!! Kind of like rubbing the buttercup under you chin can tell if you like butter or not....silly things...but when a child you really believe this stuff....and I still do....so what does that make me?? haha Always a child at heart... So many thanks to 'everyone' for so many great comments.....and truly amazing peotry to help make my challenge memorable....
