the unasked question

baby, hills run dry
beneath your velvet sky
outside i queue for gas
in the rain

baby, I don't know
how the tale of us will go
don't walk away
on stepping stones of pain

your smile is a light
on a cold dark night
look and search my face
there's no distain

all I ask for now
is some peace somehow
no need to give me
shelter from the rain

neat whiskey (and untidy women)

drank whiskey
from her navel
after hours
in a bar

heard the sound
of my breathing
through the lungs
of your guitar

and lightnings just
a broken string
on horizon's
air guitar

cloudy lyrics
fall as rain
through the windscreen
of my car

I started
a new life
as we had
just begun

swam circles
around your mind
untill you closed
the sun

you told me
i was stubborn
you told me
yes and no

I went fishin
in your creek
but the water
was too low

there's always
a new town
a new girl
and you

tryin hard
to unpick life
tangled up
in blue

the wreck of the catherine anne

fragments of stories
half heard in the inn
awoke in me fires
stoked by the gin

catherine anne moored
in secret twilight
buckled neath bullion
jewelled to it's height

a vast templar treasure
won by the blade
fortunes were lost
to greater one's made

made fame in fortune
in furnace of hell
to purchase a passage
to where her boards dwell

war steed I bought
to reach holy land
travelling savagely
mountain to strand

I found her in summer
asleep in her bed
I swam into darkness..

down to the dead

guitar

I spent monday
just walking through town
searchin' for magical
timbers of brown

I watched tuesday morning
arrive like a swan
calm at the surface
when calmness has gone

I spent most of wednesday
walking the deck
from the truest of branches
I fashioned your neck

your hips were my thursday
curved from the air
I spun every string
from a strand of your hair

friday smiled at me
from the teeth of a breeze
my old life was locks
the new one was keys

saturday woke me
to the purest of note
from the deepness of meaning
I painted your coat

now the world is a sunday
and your song is a bird
I listen to your breathing
and I know every word

we endure

I got your picture in my cabin
your smiling face is everywhere
your ghost is what I sail on
through the ocean of your hair
and my work it takes me everywhere
and nowhere fast and slow

it takes a man to plough an acre
it takes a woman to make it grow

the sea elevates my singing
despite my ungrateful tone
my thoughts are made of music
my thoughts are mine alone
then you wander warm inside my mind
like a gift from god to me

it takes a man to bring his story
it takes a woman to set him fee

girl we never did much talking
and when we did it was so brief
we laughed about eachother
and we smiled through pain and grief
you made the mundane magic
and you fought hard for your dream

it takes a man to set a plough right
it takes a woman to hitch a team

there's an empty chair that held you
a rare creature tall and true
if life has taught me one thing
Ive learned it all from you
and you laughed at my cowboy movies
as I turned into my old man

it takes a man to work his heart out
it takes a woman to give a damn

girl on a train

I sit transfixed
as thought it flies
to see warmth twice
inside her eyes

some bound for town
some bound for death
a carraige full
of moving breath

a look of hue
intercepting night
and all else there
is prop and light

mechanics aside
a rhythm in train
I see her eyes
on the window pane

and doubt and grief
run far away
as we share
the transit of a day

for even Yeats
or Neruda's verse
would paint her well
but paint her worse

some hearts
will always poets be
I smell her skin
and know.. not me

not me.

30 years

we came from near
we came from far
to trust the truth
to duel and spar
to stand upon
the hill of scarves
to nurture all
that darkness starves

"what then? cried Shankly's ghost.. what then?"

we lost our souls
all ninety six
and wrote their names
upon the bricks
and lit a flame
on every shirt
so justice knew
their family's hurt
and sang
"you'll never walk alone"
through Madrid Squares
and dusty Rome

what then?.. cried the the thief of time, what then..?

we woke to greet
the phantom dawns
as passion fought
the corporate pawns
to bleed away
and leverage hope
to bitter end
we burned the rope
and rose again
as europe fell
to the hoards of light
of brave redmen

what then? cried Shankly's ghost.. what then?

the world fell in
to viral rage
that stopped the streets
so fell the blade
and took the dream
and ran away
and stole each light
each smiling ray
but nonetheless
the truth did out
as scousers smiled
from every mouth

thirty years since tropy shown
its true..
"you'll never walk alone"

Angel

well heaven knows
and heaven lies
I'm travelling down
this road
under.. stationary skies

the distances are vast
I can see no end
its easy just to dream
it's easy to pretend

if my truck was an angel
if my truck had wings
I'd fly past all the corners
that this world brings

I'd fly down to Texas
just to say that I did
I'd hold the world
in a coffee jar
and then I'd close the lid

but my truck is an old one
and my clothes ain't new
so I turn on the radio
and I think of you

if my truck was an angel

I heard there's a mountain
at the end of this track
I don't take shit from anyone
I ain't coming back

because the sky is endless
and the trees are new
and when the world is greenest
I don't want to be blue

If my truck was an angel
if my truck had wings
then every sign would be songbirds
as the mileage sings

the wild swan of blackrock

down by the cold sea there lives a wild swan
who floats high on the harbour till all tides are gone
all alone in this world she sails by her leave
and the heart of this viewer forever she'll thieve

as dawn gathers shadows about its own hand
the white swan sings melodies broken in sand
and if you do hear her for haunted you'll be
as your mind floats like rivers down to the sea

the heart of a woman in the guise of a bird
floating on old dreams that outgrew the world
and every summer she's there and she's past
to places where light and love seldom do last

some say the wild swan was once but a pair
so split by some bullets that flew through the air
and around those same bullets was a terrible lie
that stole all the beauty from out of the sky

if you're reading this

If you're reading this
I'm no longer around
it's a note I left
I hope it's found

when life is tricky
you gamble cares
so I slid down
the apples and pears

my rent was due
and life got cheap
finance drove off
with my off road sheep

my dog had died
and that was that
he started a fight
with a mean take that
.
I was chasing dues
much time to kill
all the stress was making me
Lilo Lil

then she pulls up
in a red corvette
twas a rainy night
and her clothes were let

"I hear they call you
Noir Blue
the only man
to beat a boy called. Sue

I said" that's true "
I said" that's right "
he broke my nose
but I won the fight

" I like your style '
she said confessin
tracing the butt
of her Smith & Wesson

to the uptown grill
for food and drink
the place was nice
at least I think

over a cold one
she got me hot
I liked her legs
I liked her alot

suddenly a party
arrived at my back
a blow to my head
and my world went black

so in this place
I met my end
a shallow grave
with a gun for a friend

and on this note
my lighter sang
I took last breath
and heard the bang
