There is a lot of stuff happening around the world with the G.F.C. etc... Has this changed your perspective and the way you look at money? Or do you still spend money like you always have?

rivame: I still spend money like I always have..mainly cause telstra...electric and gas companies keep sending those bloody bills
Ive always been one to look for a bargain though and will look in a few stores to compare prices.
These bills seem to come more regularly these days and always at a higher user cost .. I have n idea of people on welfare or pensions survive .. this past 12 months, my rent, petrol, utilities and super market products have all gone up, but the company I work for has taken our overtime and put us all on just 38hr weeks and a lot of weeks I don't earn in the clear the amount of money I need to pay out, just to survive ...
Single adults are hit the hardest financially and it is just relentless .. the disposable income I had 12 months ago is gone and struggle street is where I am at yet again ...
So I surely spend less because I have less to spend .... I sometimes worry what will become of me when i cannot work anymore ..

I hear you loud and clear....I remember a time when you could work overtime and not get penalized like you do now. The amount they tax you makes it almost useless to do the extra hours.Besides, all the jobs which were once considered second jobs are now taken up by people here to "study"...jobs like taxi drivers, security, servo work, hospitality. What I cant get my little blond head around is..we allow all these people here to work when jobs are already scarce and most Aussies are doing it hard. Bet your bottom dollar we wouldnt be allowed to work in the countries they come from if we are just visitors.
daggyone: I live with a calculator in one hand and a wallet of cash in the other, cut my credit card up, only needed one when I went o/seas.
I always hated credit cards and was brought up to save for what I wanted. My first trip overseas made me learn the hard way, sometimes you just really need a credit card, even a wallet full of notes didnt help book plane tickets nor buy a can of soft drink on an american airline flight.

Things have certainly changed in the spending dept for me. I cant let go of some things that I really like... and I spend heaps on my garden, but I counter act my spending.. eg.. Yes, I buy cashmere sweaters but I will make a lot of other clothes , I spend heaps on garden construction, but then I strike my own cuttings for plants.. so I try to even it all out.
I am not a frugal tightwad.. I like myself enough to drive and pay city parking day rates, and I buy my breakfast and lunch at work. I dont think its actually dearer to do that..
But the bills are just something that has to be paid.. no getting round it...
Waste absolutely nothing foodwise and stock up on staples when they are reduced. Rarely buy takeaway as it's so overpriced, especially when you're a vegetarian .. who wants to pay over ten bucks for a bowl of noodles with a few shreds of veg in it?
I pay my utilities in regular small amounts by BPay so I'm not hit with a big lump each quarter and have started doing the old layby routine with clothes, shoes etc - you don't even notice you're paying for things when it's only $10/$20 a week.
When it comes to loans or any other form of credit (which I try to avoid) I repay weekly which shortens the term, lowering the interest payable.
I've always been a thrify shopper when it comes to groceries so no change there and managing my bills as mentioned keeps things manageable

Yes, I have April off... and I was looking for somewhere to go...but
BiG BuT
a friend came round a couple of weeks ago, and said, I needed a new bathroom and toilet... so he is planning on that.
Well, of course, there you go, that has just about taken up my funds..
then, I spent a few $K, on pavers and retaining bricks, so that is another wack gone,
then, I asked a friend to come with me for a looksee around our limestone coast, and that turned out more than expected because of it being school holidays, so all in all, I cant see it happening.

I used to do garage sales on Sat. morn. and markets Sunday morn. to make extra spending money as my pay was never enough. Now I have been working for myself, I haven't had to worry about selling in the markets for 6 years. Don't know how people survive on a single pay these days. They must be very frugal.

Cashmire seems to have been around for ever, and lasts. Bling is here now and gone an hour later. I have 3 suits now hanging in the wardrobe. Oldest one I bought for showing dogs and still fits but not fashionable. Next is very good quality, bought it for 2nd wedding and worn often afterward to impress for jobs and even managed my daughter's wedding. Bit of quality there. 3rd, because the second doesn't fit after the last 3 years of...... My son's wedding Saturday and I have had to get a new one that fits, and is more fashinable that the double-breasted one of 20 years ago that still fits.
Frugal should never imply 'cheap.' I can buy "work socks" at 3 for $10 and throw them out before a year is out. I can buy 1 good pair for $14 and they will last me for many years (oftened washed FYI).

I get a fair pension from Vet Affairs and figure it is my responsibility to keep the economy going, so I spend and anything I want. I also tend to spend of friends and strangers - civic duty sort of thing (very satisfying too)

i just been reading news on smh.com.au
The recently-released Samsung Galaxy Note smartphone has a recommended retail price of $899, but it can be purchased for as little as $519 from Kogan, an Australian-based online retailer. Similarly, the Nikon J1 interchangeable lens camera with a 10mm kit lens is sold for $800 at Ted's Cameras and only $499 at D D Photographics, a grey import reseller with a shop-front in North Sydney.
ta Rob , seems theres no way round an ISP , having trouble with my voip and just want another string to my bow . Rob , you and Pebs are going to have to get into an area where its known that there is gold left , even the best deer stalker comes up empty handed if there is no deer where he's hunting . Ya soon get pissed off not finding deer , be the same as gold . Thats going to be the trick to know where some is .
