StillOfTheNight: Would be alright to date someone who is like myself
For me personally, that would depend on how proactive you were with your treatment. I have a daughter diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder vs bipolar. She is now happily married and her husband is very supportive of her.

I am assuming she is taking medications for her condition. Its vital that anyone with this condition to take medications and see their doctor. I been back and forth for years keeping it checked on, medication adjustments (or change). I never miss my medications as things would end up going out of control.

I had a tenant for many years who was schizophrenic. She worked hard at keeping on top of things and was way more reliable than some of the other tenants.

She put real effort in keeping it in check. I can tell you its easier said than done but it can be done. A person can have the condition and still be a good person overall, it just takes awareness of their condition and being able to exist with it.

You're absolutely right. I think most people are scared of mental illness because of lack of education. It can be effectively treated.
StillOfTheNight: A lot of people with mental illnesses usually wind up alone because of stigma's and lack of education in society. I am resigned to that fate.
NAKEDMUDPEOPLE: Mental illness is my life and I will live alone because of it. Never allowing those that do not know it, they will never have the right to live it.
I feel for you
I have travelled alongside my son and his mental illness for many years now and it breaks my heart that a beautiful, intelligent, charismatic man does not have the wherewithall to form relationships, let alone find a woman who would understand him.
He's lonely and all I can do is be his Mum and support him, but needless to say, he deserves and needs more and hopefully one day it will happen for him.
Poet727: I just wondered if anyone would date a person with a mental illness? Be honest.
Oh this is funny with todays list of descriptions for the many mental illness I am curious who amongst us in this whole wide world does not think they are mentally ill. The museum awaits your arrivial. There are varying degrees of mental illness as has been discussed. What I would like to know what is a normal person? How would you describe a relatively normal person. I guess with these questions my ship has sailed on that already.
Although, the "Dark Triad"(psychopathy, machiavellianism and narcissism) are mental illnesses, and it's been scientifically proven that women are attracted to these disorders... so all is not necessarily lost for the mentally deranged man.

I answered no, but there are some that the psychiatric profession says are mentally ill, but they are not. This includes people who are a threat to the government.
In other words, I don't trust the psychiatric profession farther than I could throw them.

like any profession there are a wide range of competent to incompetent. I often believe that they go into this psychiatry or psychology to figure out what wrong with themselves, and by the time they finish that have either totally accepted their behavior as normal, or they are around so many mentally ill persons that the bizarre behavior looks normal after a while.
I think that most people forget that social deviants are now in the DSM whatever and about 1 in 25 people in the USA are under that category.... according to a few "experts" in the field.

All three of your answers could apply depending on the circumstances. Some mental illnesses are treatable, and the psychiatric profession has a great deal of success with these if the patient takes the medication on a regular basis and goes for the appropriate checkups.
Some are more disabling and require some inpatient intervention.
But unfortunately some are unrepeatable and the patient may never recover. Some of these make the patient a danger to themselves and other people. These are the ones to avoid.

'Mental illness' largely revolves around flexible models on a continuum that are influenced by cultural climate.
I agree, to ask about 'mental illness' in this context is a remarkably open ended question and may cover us all to an extent, either in terms of severity, or episodes.
To answer the OP, I would date a person who I wanted to date, if they also wanted to date me. To try and define who that person is before knowing who that person is, seems a little odd to me. It would be an uninformed choice and I don't much care for those.
In short, I don't think prejudice is terribly useful, particularly when it comes to making intimate choices.
There are so many forms of being unbalanced mentally. Not all require medication or doctors. One is having a low EQ. When one can not control reactions to emotional situations that person can be just as dangerous or more so than one on medication or visiting a mental institution. There is suicidal vs homicidal. I have found suicidal persons to be loving and caring for others but often depressed. I guess it is who you are that will decide if you will take on one that is less than perfect. Love does sometimes heal wounds. The same way growing up being I'll treated created some of these states of mental illness.

luckily I am protected by my tinfoilhat......
Do you think a professional with no practical insight will be adept at perceiving and empathising with others?
Do you think that psychological health is static, or that once experienced it means someone can only become more unhealthy and/or destructive to themselves and others?
Is this a logical train of thought you've proposed here?
