But a C-5A. C-131 or C-141 you don't hide on radars. So to use them in the covert ops....you need radar open airspace or air space that you trust.

I served for panzer in Greece and for refugee’s camps in Switzerland, both high graded. Greek air force does not fly only C-131, they mainly use theme for transportation and fire extinguish. Remember the Russian are letting us use the a northern route to the country...but no munitions or weapons being shipped.....they must want us to use rocks....
So it is a logistic route into Central Asia that by passes the Middle East and Persian Gulf. EG....Petreaus asked for convert operations a couple months ago for CEN COMM. Pretty hard to get a convert operation thru the Suez canal or over fly it via the radars on region.
Tom I believe that is also part of the interest, also the runway & facilities are to be designed to carry heavy aircraft so B52s can use it if need be & Northern Territory with its proximity to Se Asia is also a suitable location for rescue & survailance observations
