You did read the brief statment well enough. I said bin Laden was a creation of Afghan/Russian war. In her book "Growing up bin Laden"...his first wife describes...why bin Laden named his boat
after one of the fallen 911 brigade member that he brought to the Russian/Afghan war.
The man stood and a face Russian Hind M-18 helo alone while Bin Laden and other in his unit escaped. bin Laden turned to see the man literally cut in half by the chain gun of the Russian M-18.
bin Laden was so impressed with the man's heroism, that he named their boat after him. And they told their five sons, stories about him.
bin Laden had post tramatic disorder (PTD) from the Afghan Russia war.
It has little to do with his relationship with the Mushadeen.
But that said....bin Laden came back from the Russian Afghan war....a survivialist. He would take his sons into desert on day long kike and refuse them water. He woudl make the family...womena nd children...sleep at night in shallow pits in the Sudan desert.."to toughen them up" for the "coming Jahdid against the west".
If you want to find out how these people are 'really' living....read material from people...that 'really' lived with them.
