Hay Conrad, At least get into the second half of the twentieth century . With solid state technology you can convert any form of electricity ( AC or DC ) to any other including any phase or hertz . I'm an M.E. not an E.E. but even I knew that !Now as for battery or back in an emergancy, well wouldn't you ?

bollywood: Nuclear technology should be limited only of deep space energy requirements . Its extremly dangerous, will have radio active residues with half life spanning millions of years . You are burdening our future generation to safe-keep these wastes as well.Thats pure selfishness.

Let's go back to the good ol' days and use whale oil and grease our bicycle chains with bacon fat.rolling on the floor laughing

In principle I agree with you, but Solar is restricted to "direct sunlight" and is useless if the sky is overcast. The Photovoltaic system is similar to Solar but generates electricity from the Uv rays, therefore direct sunlight isn't necessary - and Ireland is not renowned for sunshine.

I have Photovoltaic tiles on my roof and they generate excess electricity for my needs. As a result, I can run my house and my neighbours house with free electricity and heating 24/7. What little excess is left is fed into the national grid, for which I receive a small payment each quarter.

Wind energy has it's limitations too, but is a useful source - although the wind-turbines do spoil the horizon in many cases. The main problem with wind energy is it's source - the wind force - is unreliable and inconsistent, for example on those lovely mild balmy summer days.

The only consistent source of energy is "Sea energy", which is constant, consistent, unlimited and free - with the exception of the cost of the turbines - but capital cost applies to the other sources too. At least those turbines can be placed in huge numbers, over a period of time, in the sea without causing pollution or interference with shipping lanes, and the electricity can be fed through the existing electricity supply grids.

Yucca Mtn Nevada it used to be. Now I don't know. Problem is the stuff is harmful for thousands of years for some, hundreds of thousands for others and some, million is of years.

In the later case, we'll be a different species that speaks a different lingo by the time the subterranean vault is moved to the surface by tectonics so how to warn the new guys about the gifts we left them.

But Ooby, why should we fund NPR in any way? dunno They can get their funding through donations from the Carnegy Foundation and other organizations and "people like you" Always liked that quote from NPR. laugh

Seriously, what makes them any different than any other broadcasting company other than they don't show/air commercials.

Hannity & Colmes Show: A straw man extravaganza!
Alan Colmes was touted by Fox as "a hard-hitting liberal", but stated to USA Today that "I'm quite moderate". He sometimes took more conservative positions than other prominent liberals, such as supporting Rudy Giuliani for mayor of New York City and agreeing with the use of torture techniques by the government of the United States. He was characterized by several newspapers as being Hannity's "sidekick". Liberal commentator Al Franken lambasted Colmes in his book, Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them, accusing him of refusing to ask tough questions during debates and neglecting to challenge erroneous claims made by Hannity or his guests. Franken also claimed that Colmes did not speak as much as Hannity during the show. Some critics also questioned whether or not both hosts receive equal time to interview guests. Some of Colmes' liberal critics, notably commentators at Media Matters for America, praised him toward the end of the show's run, however. He then began citing their reports in his confrontations with some of his conservative guests on the program.

A study by Media Matters conducted through January and February 2006 found that the number of conservatives and Republicans brought on as guests outnumbered the number of liberals and Democrats by margins of 72%–28% in January, and 67%–33% in February. Of the solo interviews that were conducted on the show, 80% of the interviews are conducted with conservatives and Republicans. However, the ratio of conservatives to liberals during that time frame may have been the result of many calls for liberals to avoid interviews on the Fox News Channel.

So much for balanced journalism!

I'm shaking the cobwebs loose to remember when MSNBC had a conservate. "Morning Joe, at best is a RINO. I did hear that Fox hired or ex Senator Evan Bayh to do guest commentary. He's a left. Geraldo is so left wing that he only can fly in a circle.
Juan Williams certainly is a pro-Obamanista.

Just being "fair and balanced". thumbs up

I think there is no future for nuclear power. It was, is, and always will be dangerous for people, environment and our globe.
