RE: Scariest Moment

Hmmm, when I was struck by a car, the thing I remember most was the "flying" actually felt kinda cool, and how amazed I was that I bounced so well that I just got up and walked away from it.

Scariest thing that has ever happened to me, sitting in a court room wondering if I would be spending my son's very first birthday (the next day) behind bars, instead of with him and his cake. No, didn't do anything bad, well, not really. Case dismissed.

RE: How would you fund education if you were in the position

"2. I would take all those people that are sitting pretty in prison and make them work on a production line 8 hours a day. 3/4 of their pay would go to schools, and the other 1/4 would go to child support if they owed it, or to charity if they dont. I would give them a Stipend of $10.00/day worked for themselves (maybe)"

This was one of the best suggestions I saw. I agree that requiring businesses to pay a tax would just trickle down to consumers. I also agree that it is unfair to charge people who don't even have kids in the schools. As far as dropping programs, I am all for dropping things like ESL. My kid had to speak english, know the alphabet and how to spell her name before she was allowed to begin. Should have the same rules for every kid, not just "home grown" ones.
Fines for kids acting out and not doing work, might be a good idea. I agree that a lot of parents need a serious shaking to remind them that they ARE parents.

As far as changing hours is concerned, here the school gets paid a certain amount of grant money based on "per head in attendance per day". They have the kids go half days frequently, so the district can basically charge double for the same amount of time.

As far as curriculum goes, I think all kids should be allowed to progress at their own rate. None of this having smart kids stuck waiting for the rest of the class to catch up. I have been in programs like this in elementary, junior high and college. Lets the advanced student advance, and leaves the teachers free to help those that are struggling.

All I know of him is what I read, and found incredibly distasteful to say the least. Not funny and not havin' it! Yeah, kick 'em to the curb for that crap around here.
Nuff said.

RE: Need advice on renting out a room to a stranger.

Just remembered that here, there is a law that says that even if a person comes into your house with only so much as a backpack filled with their belongings, and spends the night, they obtain tenant rights! No over night guests unless you want them to legally live there (scary stuff eh? LOL)
Also, you would have to check the local laws/rules about how much deposit money you can ask for. I have never heard of 3 months advance rent in my life.
And make sure that the lease includes "tenant is responsible for all costs/fees and expenses related to eviction..." Yep, make them responsible for the $80 too, etc.
DO the walk through before tenancy, make them list anything, and take pics of any damages after, for court if necessary.
Late fees, and fat ones, for late rent are also very important.

Trying to remember all that I put in that rental agreement for my mother, but it was about 20 years ago.

RE: Kitty Baby

UK1971 – My dog, who is half rott, luvs his kitty. The day we got it he started carrying it around like a momma cat, and will protect it from anything. Cat comes and rubs up against him as if to say “hello” every time it comes in from outside LOL

“have you tried the alpine cosmic kitty scratcher, or maybe its the cosmic kitty alpine scratcher?”
LOL Tried all the scratcher gizmos I could find for these cats. For some reason, these animals aren’t too crazy about anything I bring home from the store, well, except the steak and chicken I cook for the dog. They always seem to want to play with random things they find around the house.

RE: Separated

LOL You are not the only single mom out there. I was one when I got my divorce, at 19. I am just assuming that things are done a LOT differently where you are. I do remember how looney things seemed to me when a man I know was getting his divorce under Canadian law. Sure boggled my mind some of the crazy stuff that went on, like making him pay child support for a kid that wasn't even his, or had ever even seen. Can only imagine what else goes on. Had to laugh when I saw that your ex is now engaged. Just how does he think he is going to follow through and get married if he doesn't get this divorce? Sounds like you may just have your "out".
Sorry you got so upset and defensive by the simple mention of how easy it would have been to have had the money to get that divorce by now. I have found that "where there's a will, there's a way" is usually true.

Jealousy sure does make people pop off any way they can.

RE: Kitty Baby

Saves a lot of wear and tear on the furnishings and outdoor window frames and such. Stupid things had the kid's bedroom window (former means of entry) so clawed up it took forever to sand and repaint.

BUT, when we got a new baby kitten, and the former method was still in use, poor baby couldn't jump high enough to get TO the window like the other cat. Had to set up a board leading to the sill as a little ramp for the little guy rolling on the floor laughing

RE: Need advice on renting out a room to a stranger.

“Her fiance is using drugs, never coming home, and spending all of the money. She wants to get out.”
Due to past experience, I would say no because of this alone. Most druggies are EXCELLENT liars. No PROOF she isn’t one of them and scamming you. Yeah, was stupid enough to rent a few times. Others were worse, but once it was something like this. She said she wanted away from him. He kept coming around. Next thing you know, the drama moved in too. Nope, didn’t extend that lease, gave her the boot. At this time I have a couple of rooms I could rent, but don’t know if I would dare again.

I also completely agree that you NEED the paperwork, and I would suggest that in any iffy situation you make it month to month, with initial occupancy requirements being that they pay first and last, along with damage and utility deposits. Otherwise you could end up paying a lot of jacked up bills after they leave. You would also have to put it in writing that this ex is excluded from the property. You can also include limits on guests. Such as that they can only have a certain amount, for a certain time. E.g. any guest that stays more than 3 nights in any one month is a violation of occupancy, as they have technically exceeded the occupancy listed in the lease.

As far as background checks etc are concerned, sure, worth a try, but information can be falsified, and the methods are getting very good, thanks to all the illegal immigrants working so hard at it.

My mother once had a renter in her daylight basement apartment that had her so scared she called asking me which end of the glass you turn to the floor to try to listen LOL That was enough for me to ask a few questions. Yeah, they were dealing drugs down there etc. Yeah, I just moved onto the property and was my endearing sweet self (insert evil laugh here), and they decided to move. No, didn’t threaten anyone or anything, just made the place suddenly so full of traffic that they didn’t have the seclusion for their illegal activities any more. After that, I drafted her a 5 page rental agreement that had her covered for any and everything. NOBODY messes with my mommy.
very mad

RE: the best place to grow....

I couldn’t agree more!!!!thumbs up

We spend WAY too much time, money and effort on everyone else. Also, as far as ...
"Some of the wealthier countries' lower rankings were a result of less spending on social programs"

Wouldn't be so bad if there weren't so many illegal immigrants stealing from these programs. Same could be said for the adults who are fighting in that "dog-eat-dog" competition in jobs" taken by illegals.

"and heightened alienation among peers"

Alientation is in part due to their lack of willingness to assimilate, and demands to be catered to. Not even speaking english in the US business world is just one example. For our kids, having these hostile immigrants acting out in classrooms and such certainly isn't helping their education, much less all the money spent on catering to these illegals, when it should be spent on our own kids. If we weren't spreading ourselves so thin around the planet, our kids probably would have it a lot better overall.

RE: IF U R A GIRL PLEASE READ THIS!!!

Sorry, but I only see a junior high tactic like this making him look bad. Like he is too chicken to do it on his own. Are you going to hold his hand on the date too?

RE: what does ur house say about u?

Sorry, but that description makes it sound sterile, stagnant, and bleak. Granted, I don't allow out of control kids, or adults, unless of course it is during a food fight or something. But we do try to keep all food fights and water wars outside.rolling on the floor laughing

And yeah, find a man that is as sweet to me and as protective as my dog, and we may just have something there LOL

RE: Separated

14 YEARS????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BECAUSE OF $1500????? Do you realize that if you had put aside a measly $9 per month (only $4.50 per partner at that) for all this time you would have that money? Just seems to me that there isn't much motivation for getting a divorce.
But with all this about different time lines in different states, sure am glad that I got stupid/married in Washington. Only 90 days, and I scheduled my court dates for the exact soonest dates possible. I was only a teenager, doing a hand written do-it-yourself divorce, and only 90 days total.

RE: what does ur house say about u?

RFLMAO
My house. Keep in mind it has been owned by 3 generations of artists.
Yep, all kinds of oddities, including the occupants LOL
As far as atmosphere, it is a sanctuary. No mean people allowed. People come here for refuge when they are upset, and tell me they always feel better by the time they have to leave. LOL Most of the people that have ever come here hint around at wanting to move into one of the spare rooms LOL
Comfort is the main theme, but each room is very different than the last.
Of course, my room being MY personal sanctuary, it is what most describe as "victorian romance."

But ewwwwwwwwwwwwwww! Hope you were on prosecution instead of defense when working criminal. I was on the WRONG side of that one. Yep, defense, yuck. Rules suck! Prosecution has the duty to turn over anything that would assist defense, but defense does not have the same duty to prosecution. (at least those are the rules here) THAT is just another reason I have a hard time believing ALL those guys in jail are as innocent as they like to claim. LOL Yeah, I quit and went into another field. Felt like a detriment to society.

RE: I Want To Be Heard....or...Seen...

You just don't understand what it is to constantly be treated like you got where you are on your looks alone. Believe it or not, attractive women have to work twice as hard at being taken seriously.

LOL But it sure gave me a kick to see that I actually DID understand this question rolling on the floor laughing Still short a mocha this morning.

RE: I Want To Be Heard....or...Seen...

I think I understand the question, but hey, I could be wrong too. rolling on the floor laughing
I totally understand that when it is a business situation, your appearance, especially if you are an attractive woman, can be a detriment, not an asset. Its like the idiots get confused or something, looking behind you for the person with the brain that they were expecting. Even while in college, another girl and I were basically treated like idiots because of our appearance, until we slaughtered the opposition during mock trials.
When I worked law, I usually "met" people on the phone first. Then they got to "see" me in print. They get to "see" your brain first. Then when you get to the meeting, just act like you don't notice all those "looks", and don't miss a beat. If anything, make them act like fools for losing their train of thought.
I have always loved just how intimidated idiots are of intelligent people, and then an attractive woman at that, some are so ridiculous they go into a complete tail spin LOL
Just go with a strong presence, even if you decide to wear your skivies LOL Basically, go with your insides and disregard their reaction to your outside.

RE: Why is it that women seem to flock around..

I guess it is because real fathers are getting rare these days, so it is an admirable and endearing thing to see a real father doting on his child. And funny how little girls have an affect on men that little boys do not, or has no one else noticed that?
Also, some women just flock to cute little kids. My brother and male roommates used to try to use my son for "chick bait", because it worked. LOL

RE: Separated

I agree with Susie. Of course if they persist, I just tell them to leave me alone until the paperwork is final.

RE: Does Peer Pressure Work?

I have always felt badly for those kids that go with the flow, but you can see on their faces that they really don't want to.

RE: Male mini skirt dilemma

LOL I think the operative word here is "sane", although milder ones could be used. But I have KNOWN a LOT of women who DO wear these things, and lots of others, even though they admit to how uncomfortable they are (especially the old, "my feet are killing me in these shoes, but aren't they cute?") When I was young and dumb, my friends would talk me into looking all "prettied up" from time to time, and I always hated it. A lot of what they talked me into was cold, itchy (especially the stuff they put on my face, still can't stand foundation, especially how it screws up your skin), and made me feel awkward wearing it. Luckily I outgrew that stuff by about 16 LOL Wouldn't even pretend to know what this one woman was thinking however. I can only guess that it didn't fit correctly, or she was trying to get attention, if there was any of that squirming and tugging going on. I was raised that kind of fidgeting implies a lack of confidence, nervousness, stuff like that, so it shouldn't be done. Yeah, I know others are raised differently. My parents were just ultra proper and professional types.

To Americans living in America

I just get sick of everyone always trying to generalize and lay blame where it doesn't belong.

RE: Does Peer Pressure Work?

rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing

I disagree with all of that, unless you modify it to "peer pressure works on those who have low self esteem and no backbone, much less their own mind...Manners and morals are something you are taught (usually by your parents), and what they are depends on your teachers...Some people are better than others at resisting because they see how stupid it all is, and chose otherwise."

Sociopaths eh? That was so far off the mark that I laughed out loud. Using your logic, you just called people like Martin Luther King a sociopath. He certainly wasn't just going with the flow. Considering all his money and position, his peers would have been others like, well, Bush.

RE: Male mini skirt dilemma

Very funny thread. rolling on the floor laughing
But I really have to side with those who have no interest in wearing anything uncomfortable. For me, a mini skirt would just plain be too cold to wear in the winter LOL Also, with all the strings, buttons, snaps, etc., I have actually come across clothing that I didn't even know if I could figure out HOW to get it on properly. Some of that junk just confuses me LOL Sure, I have mini skirts, but they fit properly so I don't have to tug and pull all day LOL When I see a woman "fiddling" it makes me wonder why they bought the wrong size. Also, fiddling makes people look nervous and uncomfortable to me, never would have imagined it was flirting in any way. I sure never fidget to get a man to look. I make sure that my clothes don't distract me from just plain being me. Anyone else have mandatory tagectomies? (Yeah, for those things that scratch and itch, usually in the back of the neck.) LOL Wouldn't matter if I was wearing "label brand" clothing, because I rip them out as soon as I buy them.

To Americans living in America

Yes, IMO, some of these ideas are crazy. As far as us paying soldiers to murder, try NOT paying your taxes (where the money comes from). Mandatory, no choice, not like paying them is with any intent to harm. Not even a fair statement.
And yes I do get that you are saying that because we live in this country and follow the laws regarding paying taxes, that we should all feel guilty for every person that dies in a war. Suppose we are also supposed to feel guilty for every person killed in any war, even our own when killed by the other side, just for being there. And all those in the towers, since American money paid for the planes.... uh yeah, sounds crazy to me.
Regarding the bit about the neighbor. First of all, it isn't my business to jump into every altercation, which I believe is the attitude that some have about our involvement overseas. Second, it would depend on the neighbor. Some of my neighbors have a serious beat down coming, so no, I wouldn't step in to help them in the slightest. But that certainly isn't the same thing as attacking them myself. Third, when there have been innocent neighbors being victimized by those that I already mentioned, yes, I have stood up for them and protected them from the creeps. And too many times by now at that.
Just wondering, do you step up and actually DO something, or do you just run your yap in here with a bunch of theoretical?

RE: I can't believe it

Engagements can last a very looooooooooooooooong time. Once knew a couple that was engaged for 14 years!

But hey, you and I are jaded old timers LOL so let the guy be happy with his dream. For all we know, watching what he did with ma may have actually given him the best education of what marriage should and should not be.
