"As the government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion, as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion or tranquility of Musselmen, and as the said States never have entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mehomitan nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries."
Source: ARTICLE XI of the Treaty of Tripoli, 1796, signed in the last part of Washington's presidency, ratified under John Adams. Written in Algiers and signed at Tripoli on Nov. 4, 1796, and at Algiers on Jan. 3, 1797, by Hassan Bashaw, dey or bey of Algiers, and Joel Barlow (1754-1812), U.S. Consul to Algiers. The original is in Arabic, and the English text was translated by Joel Barlow. Both texts were submitted to the U.S. Senate on May 29, 1797, and the treaty was ratified and proclaimed in Philadelphia on June 10, 1797. George Washington was president when the treaty was signed at Tripoli, but by the time it reached the Senate for ratification, John Adams was president and presented it to the Senate. Joel Barlow was co-author with Moslem officials of this treaty and sole author of Article XI which contains the non-Christian statement.
It's forced prayer time which disrespects everyone else’s rights , if some one wants to take a minute out of their school day to pray all they have to do is either go to a religious school or obtain permission from their guardian to step out side the premises and do it
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA finally I have finished my first book , to cut a long story short I had exams on and thought that I would still be able to get a decent bit of relational reading done (boy was I wrong) any way I just finished “The Gathering” by Anne Enright and I have to say it was very over rated Id give it 5 out of 10 , so how is every one else doing ??
Ok people this is the official 50 book challenge thread
The challenge officially starts on this date ==è 17: November 2008 (although you can join in any time you like)
Rules
1. Read 50 books in one year (or you can pick a number of books that suit’s your self just declare the number of books on this thread )
That’s really the only rule
Once you read a book post it and it’s number (ie , book 12 catcher in the rye) in this thread with a brief description (ie what’s written on the cover ) and let us know what you thought of it ( please no spoilers)
You can read any book you want although I would encourage you to try and include some books that challenge you,
Yep what ever you want to read a lot of people use these challenges to read some of the books that are a little out of their comfort zone (ie some of the classics)
This is a challenge not a competition so the rules are pretty lax (ie you set them to challange your self) if you want to set that rule for your self fine (most people will be sticking to it on account of the fact that most books are over 200), but there are a few of the classics under 200 (slaughter house 5 and the catcher in the rye spring to mind)
Ok here is what I propose , a standard 50 book challenge , for those of you that don’t know a 50 book challenge is a common enough thing, the basics are you set your self a goal of reading 50 books in a year (if you think 50 is way too high for you ,you can always set a lower number for your self) We could start on Monday , you keep a list of what you have read and post it every time you add a book (I will start a thread for it on Monday) with a few words about what you thought about your latest read (no spoilers )
I am not sure if there will be many people interested in this
Well if you neighbour is good looking let him wag away (sorry i could not resist )
Train from Cork station to dublin huston (about 3 hours if i recall) (i know i spelt hat wrong) luas to connoly 15 mins ,from connoly it's about 30-40 mins depending on train , sure if the girls from cork meet up on the train they could get the party started on the way up
Sorry but I am going to have to call bull on that men generally need more of everything than woman due to their larger lean body mass, that said lifestyle plays big part in the equation so you cant just go by generalisation’s you need to look at each person individually ,
Really you need the full range of animal proteins , fish ,poultry and beef
Black coffee is ok its what you add to it that causes the problems in relation to weight loss sugar and milk can be a huge contributor to your daily calorie intake , also those fancy coffees you get in coffee shops can be horrendous , some go over 600 calories , say you have one each day in work 5x600 =3000 calories that’s almost a pound of body fat switch to black and it’s 0
High protein , moderate fat , and low carb Processed foods should be avoided at all costs !!!!
That depends on which Irish person doesn’t it most peoples down fall tends to be the high gh carbs you would have to combine (ie seed's with pulses) to get the full range and even then the quality is not as good as animal source protein To what degree is debatable
