The matrix was good, but often crossed the line from scifi into metaphysical musings, which in and of itself isn't bad, but it lost the impact of its message by always striving to be so symbolic.
I don't consider metaphors to be hard science.
Which is why, for years now, the genre of Scifi has been changing. Most people just call the genre SF now, not an abbreviation for Science Fiction anymore, but rather Speculative Fiction.
It's a broader nomenclature for a way wider media form than it used to be.
