A boat docked in a tiny Mexican village. An American tourist complimented the Mexican fisherman on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took him to catch them.
"Not very long," answered the Mexican.
"But then, why didn't you stay out longer and catch more?" asked the American.
The Mexican explained that his small catch was sufficient to meet his needs and those of his family.
The American asked, "But what do you do with the rest of your time?"
"I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, and take a siesta with my wife. In the evenings, I go into the village to see my friends, have a few drinks, play the guitar, and sing a few songs. I have a full life."
The American interrupted, "I have an MBA from Harvard and I can help you! You should start by fishing longer every day. You can then sell the extra fish you catch. With the extra revenue, you can buy a bigger boat."
"And after that?" asked the Mexican.
"With the extra money the larger boat will bring, you can buy a second one and a third one and so on until you have an entire fleet of trawlers. Instead of selling your fish to a middle man, you can then negotiate directly with the processing plants and maybe even open your own plant. You can then leave this little village and move to Mexico City, Los Angeles, or even New York City! From there you can direct your huge new enterprise."
"How long would that take?" asked the Mexican.
"Twenty, perhaps twenty-five years," replied the American.
"And after that?"
"Afterwards? Well my friend, that's when it gets really interesting," answered the American, laughing. "When your business gets really big, you can start buying and selling stocks and make millions!"
"Millions? Really? And after that?" asked the Mexican.
"After that you'll be able to retire, live in a tiny village near the coast, sleep late, play with your children, catch a few fish, take a siesta with your wife and spend your evenings drinking and enjoying your friends."
And the moral of this story is: ......... Know where you're going in life... you may already be there.
This is an example of the God that people pray to and it disgusts me quite honestly......
""O Lord our Father, our young patriots, idols of our hearts, go forth to battle -- be Thou near them! With them -- in spirit -- we also go forth from the sweet peace of our beloved firesides to smite the foe.
O Lord our God, help us to tear their soldiers to bloody shreds with our shells;
help us to cover their smiling fields with the pale forms of their patriot dead;
help us to drown the thunder of the guns with the shrieks of their wounded, writhing in pain;
help us to lay waste their humble homes with a hurricane of fire;
help us to wring the hearts of their unoffending widows with unavailing grief;
help us to turn them out roofless with little children to wander unfriended the wastes of their desolated land in rags and hunger and thirst, sports of the sun flames of summer and the icy winds of winter, broken in spirit, worn with travail, imploring Thee for the refuge of the grave and denied it
-- for our sakes who adore Thee,
Lord, blast their hopes, blight their lives, protract their bitter pilgrimage, make heavy their steps, water their way with their tears, stain the white snow with the blood of their wounded feet!
We ask it, in the spirit of love,
of Him Who is the Source of Love,
and Who is the ever-faithful refuge and friend of all that are sore beset and seek His aid with humble and contrite hearts.
Thats terrible! But as youve seen, your friend is a good artist and dyslexics are often gifted in other areas. The understanding of dyslexia has thankfully moved on over the last few years - I dont know why/how some people develop coping strategies and some dont though I have a hunch its down to bad teaching methods which possibly get the student frightened of failing. When I was assessed (about 4 yrs ago)I was more than surprised as I was always good at english but when I looked back, I did remember getting D's and B's the wrong way round for ages and oddly I still do that one from time to time lol
Round that time though I had an excellent teacher who Ill always remain endebted (<- Ill leave that one in to illustrate lol)to as she encouraged me over the humps and made the fear of getting it wrong go away, she had me reading out loud for ages lol - I wish all kids could have their own Mrs Downing But, often its not possible to even read that well as dyslexics sometimes have the letters jumping all over the place and may need a colour filter which helps stabilise what they are seeing - a friend of mine has some amazing rose coloured specs lol
This may be a bit of help for anybody working on coping strategies
I have to stand up for my fellow dyslexics here - to some people spelling comes easy while for others its a torturous nightmare and may even stop them from joining forums such as this at all. Some of us never develop the coping strategies to overcome the condition and for their sakes, I have to say that as long as people can make themselves understood, thats fine by me.
However, in the stories found in the Book of Genesis, Chapter 1-12, such as the flood story, the record is quite different: the time period under consideration is much more ancient. The factual bases of the stories are hidden from our view archaeologically. The stories remain a part of folk traditions and were included in the Bible to illustrate and explain theological ideas such as: Where did humans come from? If humans were created by God (who is perfect and good), how did evil among them come to be? If we are all related as children of God, why do we speak different languages? It must be remembered that the Bible is primarily a book of religion, a guide to faith. it was not a book of history, poetry, economics, or science. It contains all sorts of literary genre, which are used to teach about the relationship between God and mankind. Even biblical history is edited history: events were chosen to illustrate the central theme of the Bible. The Biblical writers did not pretend they were giving a complete history; instead they constantly refer us to other sources for full historical details, sources such as "The Annals of the Kings of Judah" (or Israel).
It is therefore not possible to try to "prove" the Bible by means of checking its historical or scientific accuracy. The only "proof" to which it can be subjected is this: Does it correctly portray the God-human relationship? In the best analysis, the Bible is a religious book, not an historical document.
Its odd but thats exactly where I think Im luckier than most - yes, I had constraints as a youngster, most of which were self imposed but i also knew a freedom which many never get to experience - I was lucky to go my own way and retain my integriry for so long
and if people now somehow perceive my behaviour as vindictive in some way then I have no way to defend myself other than to state that Im not vindictive or horrible - Im actually quite lovely and certainly very loving and my whole raison detre (however its spelt) is that we should all get along despite minor dfferences
No, I had perception, I just didnt get to compartmentalise it adequately, to suit my own needs and justification.. Honestly speaking, I never thought of guilt till not long before I studied psychology at uni - it was something other people experienced till then - Im a bit of an innocent in some realms of thought - it took me years for instance to realise that some people have cruel intentions - the internet soon put me straight on that one
Life: Explained
Thank you! I thought it was quite sweet too
