I do commend you for being a strong woman and removing yourself from the abusive situation you were in. It is not always the easiest thing to do in some circumstances. I think perhaps the nightmares you experience are what are sometimes referred to as flash backs. It would be my opinion that the reason you push others away when you are interested in them, or vice versa, is an unconscience normal self protection defense. I am sure there is underlying fear of being traumatized again and suffering loss. It might be a good idea to seek counseling to over come and work through what you have suffered.
