barebum61: its good that you are having it ......but melbourne ......what you live around the corner..... why dont you do it in some exciting place ....instead of a concrete jungle .....make it fair on everyone
Cities all over the world are just concrete jungles. The big Apple is the epitomy of concrete jungles but people flock there.
Barcelona is a concrete jungle. But ask Merri and she is going back there because there is so much to see when you make that short walk away from that concrete jungle.
Okay, Melb isn't stuffed so full of churches like Rome (and Adeliade) that it is all you see.
On a weekend, Melb finally hit the 20th Century in the 80s and had things open on Sundays.
I do believe that Adelaide has now allowed more than just the churches to open on Sundays since Melb stole the Grand Prix. 15 years ago, I was lucky to get fuel on a public holiday.

um, embarassing to say but... it was actually an interstater that started the Melbourne meet, not the locals!
a meet could take place anywhere because you dont go for the location but the people you are meeting. The advantage of a big city is there is public transport available if needed, and lots of choice for before and after the meet and plenty of other things to do if you dont like the people you are meeting!
Barebum.. bite the bullet put the feelers out to see if there is enuff interest to organise your own meet in your own backyard

it can and is a lot of fun
Umm, being only in this neck of the woods for only 10 years, I still don't know many spots to go around Melb. First time I went to J&J was when my step-father came down and wanted to see Cloe since he had seen her once 60 years earlier during WWII. Think that was the highlight of his time here even though me and the then-missus did show Mum and Rex a lot of other stuff.
Barebum, if you think Melb is just the high-rise buildings in the city centre, try looking at books such as "Day trips around Melbourne" and it may open your eyes.
I have driven around the Adelaide Hills many times and loved it evry time. I have been to the Barossa Valley and McClaren Vale. And wilo them every chance I get when over that way. I always make sure I go to Hahndorf because I know I can buy some decent german sausage (no, Lookin, stuff to eat not to chew on).
Oops, these are not "in" Adelaide. These are "out" of Adelaide.
Not everything is "in" the city.
Often those gems are just out of sight. Venice has many beautiful sites when you take a short stroll away from St Marks. Saltzburg has the most wonder "old city" away from the main city. London has fantastic places just 5 hours (50 miles) out.
Then again, Edinburrrrrrorrough is fantastic wherever you go.
