UNICEF...

UNICEF is the acronym for United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, created in 1946. In 1953 their name changed to United Nations Children’s Fund.
What do I know about UNICEF?
Other than the name being some agency that helps children in third-world countries... I really know nothing substantial about them.
What I do know is the number of women who are on CS and claim to be working for UNICEF to be as much as 5% of new membership, only to be beat by hairdressers who work in saloons. (yeah, saloons and not salons)

So, I did a quick check to see a little about UNICEF.
Headquartered in New York City much of their efforts impact the lives of the most disadvantaged children. Prevention of disease, immunization programs, educational and welfare services is what they do.
Their website has a global outreach working in over 190 countries and that sounds like they employ hundreds of thousands of people around the globe.

Looking at the careers, they are always hiring on a contract basis for all positions. That part is legit. So it makes things harder to sift out who is real and who is fake, especially since so many female members on CS claim to be working for UNICEF.

I'm a skeptic and think it's the perfect front for a scammer who claims to travel or be an American working for UNICEF to be on assignment in Zambia, Ukraine or some country different that what the profile really says. She's from Texas but on assignment in Ghana.
You get the picture...

Gunny Sack...

It's a YouTube Thursday that's taking me across some blues rock and I hit a biography about Johnny Winter. What heights would his career have gone without his heroin addiction?
Hi younger brother Edgar followed the 'path of rock' while Johnny leaned toward blues, he often performed rock and roll in live concerts.

Here he is playing the Chuck Berry standard Johnny B. Goode

Of the lyrics "He used to carry his guitar in a gunny sack" I wasn't 100% on the words gunny sack, so I looked it up.

Gunnysack or gunny sack is a large bag of heavy woven material, typically burlap.

There were lots of Southerners living in Miami 60+ years ago when my family moved from New York and they had words that weren't in my vocabulary. I remember going to a store to buy bubble gum. The lady at the counter asked if I wanted to put them in a sack. I hesitate and she repeated herself. Not understanding 'sack' she rephrased the question:
"Do you want me to put them in a 'bag' for you?"
"Yes please"

Frozen doctor...

This is a strange story about a doctor who leaves the hospital on Thursday and disappears. Police were able to access his home surveillance video and see he left on foot Thursdayafternoon, so they searched using K-9's drones and officers on foot.
Nothing was found... but for some reason they decided to drill through the ice of a nearby pond and found the doctor!

Unclear how he ended up in the pond, the medical examiner's office will perform an autopsy with toxicology testing.

I'm speculating he thought the ice would support his weight. When it cracked he slipped in a froze to death.
What a horrible way to go...

Kitchen Remodel...

One of the first things I wanted to do when I bought a condo 3 years ago was to change the kitchen. I had several different designs worked out and did a few layouts for other units in my community. Everything was based on budget and future resale... that is before COVID and housing values to double in 3 years.

At the time I was working for a kitchen provider who purchased in volume from a Canadian source. I could have done something really nice for a good price.
I procrastinated and no longer have access to that supplier. The company I'm working for now does custom cabinetry and I cannot justify the expense... not for my condo.
Options are 2 companies who import from China and they assemble locally. I've seen their quality and it wasn't to my liking.

Last year, I found a new source. Around the industrial park is a supplier who imports from Central America. It's a plywood box with white laminate interior, white shaker style doors and soft close hardware on the doors and drawers. Nice for the price so I cannot complain.

Timing is everything and I was taking a few days off so I was possible to get the 4 base cabinets needed to start the project. Like IKEA, these come in boxes and need to be assembled. I've got one done and the others will happen after lunch... oh, it's 3pm. Make that a late lunch.

The existing kitchen was also assembly, probably from Home Depot where it was installed on a bare floor and the tiles were cut to fit after. That won't do as my partner and I are removing section by section and 'back filling' the voids with tiles and some cement so the whole thing is level. That way the stove doesn't drop 3/8" and require spacers to raise it level.

The appliances are old, but working. So it's not in my immediate goal to replace them... maybe the microwave hood as the handle cracked a few times and the repairs aren't holding up.

One cabinet is assembled and all the parts fit. This is promising.
I cut the plumbing so I can remove the sink cabinet, the plumber is coming tomorrow morning to replace the corroded shutoff valves. It's a 2-part job for him as I'll need him back when the new sink gets installed.

I'm trying to decide what body part hurts the most... shoulder, lower back, feet. I'm out of Tylenol and have reached the limit of Aspirin for the day. Maybe tomorrow, I'll take some blue pills... not THOSE blue pills... the Aleve blue pills.

No heat...

My condo has central air conditioning with coils for electric heat. The bathroom has electric heating coils on a separate switch to the exhaust fan. The heat hasn't been used since last year. Dust accumulates on the coils and the first use emits smoke as the dust burns from the coils.

I go through this every winter, whether it's a 1200 watt space heater or central heat... an allergy attack that knocks me out for a few days!

Last month, I visited my brother in Ohio. It was 17 degrees Fahrenheit outside and his furnace had the interior around 78 degrees. The problem was the lack of relative humidity. My guess it was 'sinus cracking' 10% inside.

Florida is usually more than 80% with temperatures in the 80's and going to the Ohio extreme had me on antihistamines and saline nasal spray for a few days until I returned to Florida.

This weekend, South Florida may have the warmest temperatures in the nation. It was cold last night with temperatures to 42 degrees around here. My front door has jalousie glass and you can feel the cold wind blowing through the slats. Room temperature right now is 66 degrees. Yeah, it's chilly inside!

I'll be out of here this afternoon to visit family and my plan is to remove the covers to the heaters and vacuum the coils... all of this maintenance will be done while wearing a KN95 filter mask. Prior to leaving, I'll turn on the heat to 70, enough to burn off the dust so when I return the smoke will have cleared and I'll change the filter to the a/c system.

Once 11 months of dust burns away, the air should be good and I'll get out the vaporizers to bring up the humidity!

Happy Holidays...

Hurdy Gurdy...

I cleared my cache file of a few hundred YouTube videos and started out fresh. From a bookmark link about Irish whistles, I found a link to a Hurdy Gurdy demonstration. Oh yeah... Hurdy Gurdy, I know the name from the 1968 Donovan song and I've seen photos, but I don't recall actually researching the instrument.

In short, it's a stringed instrument of French origin dating back to medieval times. A quick description is a few strings, a crank that turns a wheel with felt on it that rubs the strings and with keys that play the notes.

The Hurdy Gurdy makes a violin-like sound but the wheel (unlike a violin bow) is continuous and you can play several notes at the same time. It also has other strings like drones that resonate. I'm surprised with an instrument so unique there aren't a large group of players.

You don't know SQUAT about trucks...

Guys in Virginia, North and South Carolina who modify their trucks with oversized tires and modified suspensions are headed down the road of legal troubles.
The trend called Squat Trucks has the entire vehicle raised with the front suspension much higher than the rear. Often they have lighting in each tire and wheel well to show off their shiny rims.
What's the problem of having your truck jacked-up?
Raising the front affects the driver's visibility and aims the high intensity headlights to blind oncoming traffic. Depending on the state they are in, more than 4 inches is past the limit. There's a ban with fines as high as $300. In the interest of public safety, repeated offenders could have their licenses suspended. A Myrtle Beach pedestrian was struck and killed in 2021.

Pet Peeve # 64,376...

I've got an issue with pull tabs. They are on food products everywhere.
This morning, I tried to open a container of oatmeal and the pull tab broke off.
I needed a knife to pry it open.
Lemon juice has a snap open top and the first use requires removal of a pull tab.
It broke.
Same with the rice vinegar... broken pull tab.
Milk... pull tab.

Surrounded by her family...

I'm not trying to negate the death of Shirley Ann Watts, widow of Rolling Stone drummer Charlie Watts. She died last Friday on the 16th of December at the age of 84.
But this is another report of someone passing away "surrounded by family."

A high percentage of famous people who die unexpectedly or after a short illness are surrounded by family. I don't know, I find it strange.

Your weekly dose of Donald... Christmas comes early.

You better be good, you better better not lie, you better be good, I'm telling you why, the IRS is coming to town!
There's so much excitement in the air. Holiday lights are up, snowbirds are here in Florida, traffic is snarled and the man who said he "Knows more than the IRS" is starting to sink into quicksand. Donald, don't thrash. It will only make your arms tired.

The House Ways and Means Committee voted to release former president Donald Trump’s tax returns this week.

The January 6 committee concluded and released a final report to the DOJ urging them to prosecute Trump for 17 things including inciting the insurrection.

Wealthy rock stars hoarding vintage instruments...

More than 70 years ago, Gibson Guitar Corporation manufactured their first solid body electric guitar and with the help of musician Les Paul, they released several different models in his name.
Competing with Fender who bulk manufactured basic guitars on an assembly line, the Gibson Les Paul model had more hands-on craftsmanship. Select flamed maple front, decorative binding on the body and glue-in set neck (as opposed to bolting on a Fender neck) were the most significant visual differences. Another difference were the pickups. Fender used single coil pickups that were subject to interference or 60 cycle electrical hum. The Gibson pickups named Humbucker had dual coils inside a metal shielded case. Some of the early pickups were stamped patent applied for, later known as PAF were the most sought out style of that era.
So the combination of design, wood, hardware and electronics, adding limited production has made those models difficult to find and extremely valuable.
Unfortunately, collectors... players or not, scoop up these guitars whenever they can.
Guitarist Joe Bonamassa will go through pawn shops looking for vintage Les Paul guitars in the cities where he is performing.

Last year I saw a video of the guitar collection owned by Rick Nielsen of the rock band Cheap Trick. He's got many different brands and models and remembers every purchase.
According to Wiki, Nielsen has owned about two thousand guitars over the years and currently has about 500 instruments.

I believe he's got a museum for viewing and sometimes does shows of his favorites.

Here's a 5 minute version for an online music company name Reverb:

Mike's mouth...

Some of you may remember My Pillow CEO Mike Lindell's trouble with the 2020 election and false claims about the Dominion voting machines. Mike is probably up to his ears in legal troubles, but that's another story. His mouth got him banned from Twitter, but since Musk bought the losing entity, he's brought back Mike, or is that brought Mike back?
With a sense of empowerment, Mike declares they should melt down the electronic voting machines and turn them into prison bars.
For who Mike... you?

That's one more twit back on Twitter.
