Confucius, ancient Chinese thinker....

.... and his plugs for respect for our elders/ancestors..
I began to like this guy, when I read that he used his leather bound I Ching so much, that he had to replace it several times.
Culturally time period stipulated advice, sure enough. But doubt he would turn his parents in to the authorities on the basis of politics, or anything else. But who really knows?

His main point always was man at his best. The bulk of his sayings tried to teach that man should strive to do right and be best at his endeavors. Whether peasant or royal, how he treats others is how to judge a man.thumbs up
Our good friend, O hat. I defer to your ability to fully understand the truly brilliant in life, as to their main points. I'm humbly only able to decipher a little, as with his use of the divination powers of the I, and the wisdom of respect for ancestors.
Still working toward those levels of deep insight. And even riding the vintage road machine MC all winter long---so far, doesn't seem to help.
Give it up girl, is that your secret?
@orz with the stress on MAN as high and woman as low. On authority to be obeyed and not questioned. Adherence to kongzi mengzi laozi was to a large extent responsible for the decline of Chinese culture from its high of 2500 years ago to the low of 1850-1940
Which to mean explains the relative success of communism in the far east and nor Russia. More than collectivism and more than a response to colonialism(the tsar was a foreign colonialist invader trying to make Russia European)is how old they are. They were incurious before and I actually don't see orientals as that deep and mysterious. City planners could have an extremely good guess at what they're going to do.
When studying any ancient philosophies, whether Chinese, Roman, Greek or even indigenous peoples, one must consider the knowledge level, the living conditions, the rulers and the age. We have the ability to sort the wheat from the chaff and see that different times lead to different beliefs.
The wording of man is also used to indicate mankind as in humans, not male as opposed to female. The same rules apply to all people no matter whom. Be your best.thumbs up
Confucius would be ashamed of the Chinese if he was ever to come back..
Why? That seems a very sweeping statement.
Like saying Lincoln would be ashamed of Americans if he came back.
I think Lincoln would be very proud of what America has achieved since he died, sure a minority are braindead members of dubious cults, but in the main, the US has been a pioneering country. Same with China.
Modifying coronaviruses with Gain of Function Experiments, then losing said Plague on the Earth is nothing to be proud of (In case you didn't realize).....
*(sp).... Loosing said Plague
Pioneering, as for Davy Crockett and pals in the Alamo. And Orz, my motor cycling hottie, right on. We should never be completely forgiven for our actions, but it's helpful to try to understand the times we live in, before judging too harshly.
If the Chinese could only admit the truth of this, and that the Virus could likely well have gotten loose accidentally then there may be some redemption possible....
the obsession ot the @lcbr shows as always but has sfa to do with Confucius. China basked in the perceived glory of their marvellous thinkers, their high water mark, and wallowed for two thousand years left in the dust of the nearly contemporaneous Plato and the many who followed, but particularly in mathematics and science. Chained as they were to ever more ancient ideas and disregard for science, they still stayed ahead until the 17th century perhaps.

Plato to my mind ranks far ahead, but both are indeed worthy of thought and study.
I notice the Chinese are really taking their time when it comes to explaining the origins and particulars of the now notorious Covid virus. If the answer was as simple as bats, pangolins, and wet markets; then surely they could have confirmed this by now?

All-Knowing Fargo: Could you perhaps suggest the reason for this? (being the resident China Expert here).......dunno
At least I'm pretty sure, that he would have strongly advised against it.....professor
Just noticed that The Beeb is a bit short on detailed info, concerning the modified S protein. Here's a link explaining things, a bit more accurately:

@lcbr On the contrary he was very much a yes-man when it came to authority, something in large part the reason for official adaptation of his 'philosophy' or precepts of governing almost 2000 years later.
The Good Professor may have been wrong about the vaccine/s (only time will tell, with increasingly mutated strains of the virus being detected); however, is the other part of his argument wrong?.......
The sad part of all "great" thinkers is that their attempts to enlighten and enrich humans fail. A few people make a resolution to be man at his best. The rest either never understand the concepts or discard them in their struggle to obtain the material things societies tell them must be their goals. Atavistic man wins out over the intellectual man.
I always say humans were given the brains to become their gods and they blew it. My late husband used to say we gave them the books and they ate them.roll eyes
Orzzz,

Technology in the hands of "Apes"?
To think that Confucious's ideas have come to this:

(ok I don't think he was personally to blame)......

Fargo seems to think that these types of things are "the best thing since sliced bread"....apparently....confused
I mean these type of things must have his tacit approval - otherwise, an earnest soul, (such as he) would speak out against it.........professor
What about this documentary?:

Apparently, there are those here that think Falun Dafa, etc, must be lying because the CCP was very bad to them; therefore the above (documentary) must be untrue, thereby demonstrating the reasoning capacity of your average 5-year-old.....professor
Fargo thinks this, and so does another fellow (ST). I would have thought that exceptionally intelligent men (such as these) would be able to spot such a basic flaw, in their "reasoning", but, alas, apparently not............
Well one of them (Sir_T) uses "cancel culture" to delete comments which flummox him. And the other (Fargo), is presently off learning new words from his Expanded Oxford Dictionary (probably)....
Yep, LCBR, our friend. If you really want to get his dander up, quote a bit from "In the Closet of the Vatican".
A page turner.
But more to the point. Human clones. Of the Vierk? IMPOSSIBLE.
ok V, I'm not sure that he is RC (and don't hold that against him) but selective deletions do not help one win a "reasoned debate" (if such a thing exists here). Btw I got Rosehipsters "dander up" by mentioning "In the Closet of the Vatican" (before my comment was selectively deleted). Funny how they only believe what suits them, when it suits them, no?
Well, one admits to having spent a couple of years in a Vaseline/KY jelly/red knees SEMIN-ary. The other is so compulsively burdened with being a functioning fake, self admitted as well, that anything is possible. Wish both would get over their deep, VERY deep, Vierk man crush.
@lcbr like a dog to regurgitated breakfast, you return to a topic that is not the topic of the thread. Confucius is in the title. Focus. A debate? You may think it is a debate, but no one managed to explain the subject to you it seems. Adjudicator awards 0 for matter and method, a smidgen for manner (perhaps, out of sympathy).
Thosa that Admire Confusecious, your decisions to talk about members not present, politics, and Covid were very unwise!laugh
Confuseus say this V man with white hair have no hair by Crackeee !!!!! rolling on the floor laughing
ConfuseUs ... laugh
Don't give up your day job Fargo.....rolling on the floor laughing
Confucious was a thinker,
Around the edges he did tinker,
Until he had a good philosophy,
That was not merely sophistry.
Swamp creature R as ever hot on the physical appearance of those whom he envies. All here who have eyes, can just look and say WTF.
..eYe have to admit..
