Funeral...

I attended a funeral today for the mother-in-law of a friend who shares the model aircraft hobby with me and a handful of other friends. The woman's health was failing and they were making plans for her to stay with them. Things changed and she was hospitalized. From there it was a downward turn. Hospice was called in for the final few days.

We all know my friend's wife, but none us met his mother-in-law. About 5 of us attended the ceremony. It was the first time I've seen them in 'nice clothes' as we usually meet on weekends wearing shorts, sun glasses, baseball hats and athletic shoes. The mother was in her 80's and nearly all the folks attending were over 60. Friends and family made for a pleasant reunion. My friend and his wife were appreciative we were there for support.

Listening to those who gave testimony about the woman and her life, it appeared she was into photography and famous in her city for following many of the sports teams starting from high-school into college. I believe her photos were used in amateur sports publications locally.

Now that she's gone, her 2 children will clear her house and get it ready for sale. The realtor they selected had the house appraised and made a list of items that need to be brought up to code so there will be no complications in making a sale. Expected to sell for above the appraised value, this is no surprise for nice houses in South Florida.

My friend and his wife are content in the house they currently own and will probably pay off the mortgage with the inheritance money. I would think the rest would be for some investment when the time is right!

Summing things up, the pastor said "Betty is in a better place now..."

Sorry about your friends mother inlaw Chat, but i do like and am interested in model aircraft as a hobby.
Do you still do that hobby Chat? and do your aircraft fly or are they just models?
Butcher... thanks.

I started in model aircraft around 1975 when a coworker came in with a hobby magazine that covered a contest with model helicopters. My interest was only helicopters. I don't fly model airplanes. I did that for 15 years or so and lost interest after a car accident.
Around 6 years ago, my ex gifted me a tiny drone and the radio control interest started again. Drones were a gateway drug to my real love for model helicopters.
The obsession surpassed the hobby stage and now it's a sport with high performance machines that fly in excess of 130 miles per hour and weigh around 4kg.
The best advice comes from a local hobby store. Unfortunately, online purchasing has killed off many businesses. Always choose a new model and not something marked for quick sale as parts availability drop off quickly.
Good call Chat, parts availablity is big with anything you buy.
What's it like buying online Chat ? i want to see if there are any RC America's cup foiling catz out yet.
Nice of you to support your friend...

I have to say, I have never been to a funeral, that talked about their inheritance...and, what they are going to do with the money...
Do not put money into a house you are selling....I painted the outside of my house..the new owner....repainted it again..shortly after he closed on it....

Very smart move for your friend and his wife to pay off their mortgage...Makes monthly expenses so much easier when we get old...

Thanks for explaining....Makes much more sense now..
Grief and emotion! I hope you and your friends are OK. Got to remember that none of us can escape death!
