One huge crash of lightning!

I was painting a table with my computer on, listening to music when it happened. I heard a loud "bang" ! Lightning struck just infront of my house and the electricity went off. Well the power is back on now so I tried to switch my computer on again, but it is dead. I feel great sorrow for my faithfull departed. All my memories, files.. Music and wonderful pics... Gone in a flash !

Hi, dear!
this is exactly why I never store important pictures and videos just on hard drive. I usually make copies on DVD to store.

You can still retrieve everything Tangerino, its only the power parts that are blown in the computer. The actual harddrive is still alive. I cried when my other laptop died, because of the memories that were on it. Take it to the shop and they will tranfer all data to a external hard drive. Good idea to backup the computer, but like me I never done it untill after the computer crashed.

might be repairable. If not take the hard drive can be converted into an ext drive for little money, worked for me in the past

was it on power or battery ? you might be able to get your laptop fixed as it might only be a fried CPU , ok

Hi Virgo, power, it's a desktop and if it is just the cpu maybe that's not as bad as i thought. But a huge inconvenience for me all the same.

it might be the power surply in your computer that neebs to be repaced ...what type or make and model is it , as I buid and repair and teach people to fix there own computers ?

Tangerino...sorry to hear that. Hopefully you can retrieve everything. If lucky enough the issue will be restricted to replacing only the SMPS. If you had connected the broadband connection directly to the motherboard USB port, then it is going to a bit of a problem.

Hard drives are incredibly rugged. Is it possible that most of the computer is fried, but that the hard disk itself might be saveable, even if it has to be torn out of the hard drive? You might consider this option, since the contents of the hard drive were precious to you. I hate to see you lose your stuff like this. My sister had two computers that were fried in the fire. One was totally useless, and could not be recovered (needs a new hard drive put in), but the other one was able to have the hard drive recovered.
