symptoms of Corona

I found this interesting on CNN tonight. They interviewed a couple people who had direct experience with the Corona virus.

This one younger lady, probably in her early 30's...she was diagnosed with it and she said that she had lost her sense of smell and taste. The host commented that she had heard that before as well.

Then they interviewed a few nurses from the elderly home out in Washington State...I think, or maybe Oregon. But anyway, they said that the patients with it, their eyes turned red. One lady (nurse) said, it was like they put red eye liner on.

Anyway...just a few things I have not heard before other than just tonight.

Stay safe all.

The flu, world war one peace, and world war two war....

... US president Wilson, professor and idea man behind his 14 points for peace Great War armistice, embryo seed for the UN, was reportedly a victim of the 1918 (Spanish) influenza---epidemic in Gay Paris at the time. We think of the flu, as with this current novid 19, as having many physical signs and symptoms. But in some cases, it affects the ability to think, even if no frank severe encephalitis is fully present. President Wilson's usually forceful personality, influential in a somewhat generous treaty proposal with Germany, apparently was in no shape for later argument with French politician Clemenceau (known as the tiger), who wanted a pound of flesh from the German broken, starving and demoralized state. Witnesses say that Wilson was shaky, confused and anything but a match for the French. Sort of like Creepy Joe will be in debates with President Trump. But I digress. When the final plan was signed in Vesailles, some 20 miles away, the already badly beaten Germans were skewered with impossible war debt, humiliating other terms, and almost total demilitarisation. Most historians see a direct connection with the rise of Hitler and Nazism over the following 20 years. Wish I could make this stuff up.

Washing your hands... That's NOT the correct way to do it!

So far, I've seen more than a dozen videos explaining the best way to avoid (any) virus is to frequently wash your hands for at least 20 seconds. Yet, every example has the person opening the faucet, washing then touching the faucet again to shut off the water!

Washing... The most important part of the equation was negated when you touch the faucet you contaminated 20 seconds earlier!

If you don't believe me, try this experiment. Drip something like mustard or ketchup on your fingers and smear it around. Go to the sink and wash. Shut off the water and dry your hands with a towel... inspect the towel. Did some of the mustard from your 'clean hands' make it to the towel?

Paper towels are great as you toss them when you are done. But in a family environment, you've probably got kids and parents sharing the same cloth towel. Pass the virus please...

Somewhere along the way washing the faucet handle/lever should be considered before turning off the water.

Washing your hands... That's the way to do it, if you do it correctly!

Hope for treatment of people infected with coronavirus

In Wuhan doctors were desperate for a way to treat patients and thus tried a variety of drugs for effectiveness.
One drug used to successfully treat malaria helped. With corona virus infections it helped reduce hospital stays and hasten recovery. It had a similar effect with SARS. While perhaps not advisable for the general public, due to side effects, it might offer promise as a treatment, especially in severe cases.

Very good news regarding the Coronavirus

A lot of progress has taken place in understanding the coranavirus.
The genes have been sequenced and proteins have been made.
Indeed, one of those proteins is a "spike" protein that the virus uses to attach
to a host cell. It's sort of like an anchor that initiates further progress in the
infection process.
After the virus attached to the cell, the membranes of the cell and the virus then fuse,
enabling the RNA of the virus to enter the cell and direct new virus production.

Well, genes for this spike protein itself have been isolated and incorporated into cells.
These cells were then used to make lots of this spike protein.
Subsequently, this protein has been 3D mapped and now it has been sent to many
research teams to both produce drugs for treatment and to use as antigens to make vaccines.

Thus within a month or two, vaccines will possibly become made and tested for effectiveness.
The bottom line, is that progress is rapidly being undertaken.

There may actually be something good to come out of this. The common cold is caused by a virus
in the coronavirus family. Imagine if one of the vaccines against the new virus also works to
prevent the common cold. It is possible. It would be a nice positive side effect.
I can hear the potential commercials now. laugh

Well, all, it's now really fully in gear....

.....the public health approach to "flatten the curve" on the Novid 19 CHINESE, VERY Chinese, virus. Good thinking, as the same number of cases, but spread out over time, will help the health care systems not be overwhelmed, even in the back waters of the world.. Might, theoretically, also boost herd immunity, and cut the death rates. While we await specific treatments, and vaccines. Low level preventive approaches, and high tech science. What could possibly go wrong?

Pesky little virus !

I had an excellent workout at my gym this afternoon.
However, I learned that tonight they will be shutting down the gym
for at least 2 weeks. Dammit !
The last 2 months I have put on a lot of muscle working out at that gym.

I get home and read some emails and for at least 2 weeks, they have delayed
the start of my softball season (multiple leagues). Dammit !

Pesky little virus !! 178 cases of coronavirus now in New Jersey.

However, at least I haven't gotten it yet and I'm still very healthy.
People in their 80's have to be fairly nervous by now.

I hope they come up with an effective vaccination sometime relatively soon.
