Rising from the Rubble of Misfortune

As I've mentioned before, I post my photos to a local community site. I've garnered a significant following on there, due to the local photos I take of the area. The calendar I made for this year was solely due to people asking me for one, as I had had no intention of making one. The result was a very lucrative endeavour, albeit a mad push to get the photos together.

This year, it's evident that there's already an expectation for another calendar, which is great, although it can be a bit overwhelming trying to choose the photos. I tried having people 'vote' on which photo they liked, but instead of just choosing one photo, they 'liked' all of them, which essentially, nullified the entire process. Ultimately, the choice is mine anyway.

So I did away with the 'contest' realizing ppl just couldn't follow directions. There are a few photos that I definitely want included, and I know people will expect some of our local mountain. Keeping the calendar in mind, I figured that would be relatively 'easy' for this year. Although I've been asked to do one for two other surrounding areas. Ack!

Continuing to post my photos, several people have asked if I'd thought of doing a photo book of the area. I'm not quite sure why people want a book anymore, as they aren't very popular. They're expensive to publish, as well as have a limited market. I can't see that it would be a lucrative venture.

To the several people that have asked, that was my response. Simply not enough $$ or demand for it. As this area has a significant indigenous population, several of the local First Nations have asked about a book, saying that my photos really depict this area. I still kind of balked at it. One local woman asked me about publishing a book as she's part of a local publishing house. I had my usual response, however, she wasn't prepared to take 'no' for an answer. She asked me if I wrote, which I replied in the affirmative.

Oh groan! What have I gotten myself into?! She asked me to put together some photos and writing (poems, experiences, history) of the area, and she'd present it to the publishing house. She said they were extremely interested (yeah, but does that translate into $$?).

So my next project seems to be like the first one, by request. I'd best get busy trying to figure out how to start the book. It's exciting, but a bit overwhelming at the same time.

But, what could be better? Combining two loves into one project? Yeah, I'd say the move to this community was the best thing ever. Out of the rubble of misfortune, the phoenix of opportunity rises.

Streetwalkin': Resorting to the Resort

One of my clients stopped by my house to pick up some product yesterday and advised me that it was smokier where I lived than in Harrison, at the lake. Of course I was all over that and decided to head up to the lake, camera in hand, of course.

I first drove up to Greenpointe, a section of the lake that's a bit quieter. Very quiet yesterday. On the way there, I spied some driftwood in a cove that was inviting, even with the smoke.

I noted a heron sitting on a branch and zoomed in as he took flight and landed on another one, squawking at me in it's prehistoric voice.

Noting a woman sitting with her feet in the water, reading, she was a great subject.

And so she wouldn't notice me (she didn't anyway), I hadn't realized there was a windsurfer out on the lake.

Back into town to the resort area with the main road lined with shops and restaurants along the beachfront, it was a perfect place to people watch!

This lady looked like she was from my generation of hippies, and I loved her colourful dress.

Although I'd zoom in on her hand in future, I cropped the photo to her hand as I loved the character in it holding her cane. A little grainy due to the cropping, but I like the composition.

Surprising Enterprise

Now that the rains have returned in earnest, it's time for me to do all those inside chores and other things I've been putting off. Two weeks of nothing but wonderful fall sunshine, had me gallivanting around the area, seeking and taking as many photos as possible.

My main goal today is to lay out a calendar I had no intention of making. As I'm on a local community fb page, and post photos of our picturesque area, I had no idea I had such a following. I knew I received a lot of comments and likes for my photos, but I take those with a grain of salt, as what someone likes on fb, doesn't always necessarily translate to a good photo in photo club.

After posting a photo of one spectacular sunset, one of my 'followers' said she hoped I was making a calendar as she wanted four. Numerous other people chimed in that they also wanted at least one calendar. After pricing it out, I decided that it could be lucrative. The next step is to design the calendar, choose the photos, and put up a web page for orders. Yikes! I really hadn't planned on this, and the pressure's on now as most people want them in November.

Although I have other household chores that need attending to, they'll get done in between breaks from the calendar. The chores will still be there, regardless. It's not like the chore fairy will show up and magically do them while I'm working on something else, unfortunately.

Yesterday, a little overcast, I went with two other photo club members out to the old shipyards. The following are a couple of photos from the excursion.

The old cannery

Finding Purpose

As usual, the fall has been crazy busy with work and no time for much of anything but either preparing for it, or working. It's a fun but exhausting time of year for me, with the break from now until May greatly appreciated and anticipated.

Along with the usual busyness of the season, I was asked to make a calendar of my photos for my community. Although I have all the tools and skills to design and layout my own calendar, I just didn't have time. My printer to the rescue. They had a template I could use with all the holidays marked and all I had to do was supply the photos. Yes!

I set up the parameters of the calendar page with a bleed and added my very large photo files and resized them within the bleed so the quality would be retained. When they sent me a proof, I uploaded it to the community page (it was protected so no one could download it), and asked for prepayment for the orders. I was blown away with the orders and had them all ready for my shows.

What I didn't expect was to have to print two more runs as many people either did not see the first one and I had numerous requests for more calendars. In fact, I'm still getting requests but have run out and will not be printing another run.

I'm thrilled with the success of the calendar and have been asked to print another one for next year, as well as do one for the resort area with funding from their tourism department. Yes! I can cope with that.

In fact, I have some ideas for some other things for next year, utilizing my photography. Never, in a million years, did I ever expect to be making money off something I enjoy so much. Due to the popularity of my calendar, I've also sold a number of prints of my photos to other provinces and even overseas. Gotta love that!

Now that my crazy schedule has slowed down, it's time to focus on getting my photos onto my own website, putting up a blog site that I've been wanting to do for some time, and figure out which logo to use as a watermark that I designed years ago.

For the first time in years, I also had time to make my own Christmas cards and was so happy to get into my art room to print them and use my calligraphy on the inside. I was in heaven! I haven't really used my art room since I moved and being in there was like being wrapped in a blanket of joy. Even better has been the pleasure the cards have brought to the recipients.

Onward with goals and plans for the new year, constantly improving my photography, enjoying the nature around me and giving other's an opportunity to see what I see. It's extremely satisfying when other's tell you that they've never noticed something you've taken a photo of, but because of you, they're more aware of their surroundings. Yes!

A rainy day today, and a good one to move furniture around between my office and art room to make room for the hide-a-bed. You never know, after a year and a half, I may even hang some of my paintings. Oh yeah, that reminds me, I have to get some photos together for my display in January at another photo finishing place.

I remember feeling like this when I was in university for graphic design - incredibly happy at being immersed in art, in many of it's forms. This is what I am meant to do.

New camera up-grade needed...........

wave ... I have decided to treat myself to a new camera, a new DSLR camera to be more specific. My last DSLR camera bought around 18 years ago, a Fuji Finefix has outlived its usefulness and its time for an upgrade.

My sad little Fuji finepix is going to be retired:

After a great deal of research I have decided on a Nikon D500 (see image below)

Embedded image from another site

I've read several reviews and it seems to be a perfect unit with many of the features of the Nikon D5 included without all the extra weight and expense. conversing

Of course I will also equip myself with a set of AF-S DX Nikkor lenses up to 300mm zoom and a SB-5000 Speedlight flash as the D500 does not have a built-in flash unit.

Do we have any shutterbugs on the blogs that would like to comment or advise about my choice, for or against?

..... conversing grin
