grizzwald: I am not saying it is a bad thing ....only that it is not the path many CHOOSE to take ....not because they are lazy or unmotivated ....but simply they want to pursue THEIR dream ....History is riddled with uneducated yet very successful people...

and success is relative....What one sees a success ...others see as silly.....

Genius abounds in us all no matter how small the achievements are.

an uneducated , homeless black man ....is now a multi-millionaire because of a cookie he makes...

you can say that if you do not get a degree they are lazy ...ok fair enough...

I say also a person not able to to succeed WITHOUT one is simply lazy .....

the stance is moot

In assessing people, I think it's worthwhile not to see where they ended up in life, but from where they started. It's an interesting perspective. Give it a try~

Bodecia: I know many people who had plenty of motivation to go to school. However, some simply could not, due to other restraints.

I totally understand what you are saying, and there are plenty around I am sure who are simply too damn lazy. There are also those who have worked very hard to build successful businesses who dont have a extensive On-Paper education.

I think it is hard to judge anyone without really knowing them.

Hi A. I'm not finding fault with your thread, but IMO, why do we need to judge people. I prefer to accept people for who they are not what their social status is. Having a higher education is great but it doesn't make me want to be in that persons social genre anymore then someone who is down on their luck..bouquet

Bodecia: Are you a Social Snob? Do you pick your friends and dates based on their levels of education, their occupation, the type of car they drive, the area they live in? Do you even know you do it?Does it matter to you what your friends do for a living and where they went to school? Do you find that your social groups, if you have them, tend to be with similar "types" of people? Would you prefer not to date someone who has no college degree because you dont feel you would have anything in common with them?

In these days of chronic recession, it is amazing how many of us are employed in positions of "lesser" social status that normal; many are forced to do what they have to to pay the bills, so it is increasingly difficult to guage who has the better education - the local mailman or the guy in City Hall.

Robert Green Ingersoll once said:

"“It is a thousand times better to have common sense without education than to have education without common sense.”

How true.

Additionally credit card debt is out of control: and many sufferers of credit card debt are in that situation because of "trying to keep up with the Jonses'" - buying things that will give the impression of wealth and status, like nice clothes, a nice car outside, etc etc.

In a so-called "Classless Society", after listening to others, reading articles and forming my own opinions, it appears to me that snobbery still runs riot in the world, whether it be toward lesser-educated, lesser-financially well off or those who live on "The Wrong Side of the Tracks".

Any thoughts?

I like you believe that there is no such thing as a "classless society" It doesn't exist . Stratification will always be here imo.

I don't think I am a social snob , there are actions that some do in this world that I would frown on . But would never feel better than another in society because of the job they do.

I am of the Weberian school of thought . In that I believe we move up and down the social ladder by taking steps to do so.
For exmaple , a working class person , can train ,educate and enter into a better job . With better pay , all others areas of his life could improve ,not just social standing. A middle class person could have the house ,the cars and a considerable disposable income .
Then a recession/depression can happen and all is lost . They lose everything , have to apply for social assistence and housing.
Therefore they will have lost their social position.

Inherited wealth is a different kettle of fish though , because , some of the higher echelons of society haven't a pot to piss in . But there social standing will never increase or decrease. Their "name " will always open doors. They are considered to have the manners, class , ettiquette etc , to be able to "play" in this world.

I think it is all a bags. People can and do label ,sociologists love it indeed. I look at the person and whether they earn a decent ,honest living.

Life teaches also , you no need for a copious amount of letters after your name either.

EagleWoman: That would only work for people who assess others on "what they have, what label they have on their badge, what car they drive or what neighbourhood they live in!!"

Where someone ended up in life could be pure "educated" choice, irrespective of where they "started from" ...

I much prefer the criteria "who they end up being" ...

Got a feeling my concept sailed right over... wink

When it comes to snobery never judge a book by it's cover. I know of one who is such a sob in every way and it is all a load of bull**t this person is just like me hard working no more no less I think it's rather sad to think you are better than the next person and better off than most folks. Something lacking to think material world is what happiness is.sigh

leigh2154: I worked for 18 years as a full charge bookkeeper...I went back to school when I was 36 cause I needed the piece of paper in order to get properly paid for the work I was doing...pissy but true...

Ho hum....
Leigh, Such a pity that you have to have that piece of paper to prove you can do what you have been doing all along . I think that is the major problem with the world today, too many stupid people in it.

I totally agree, C. And thats really the whole point of the thread. People have stated, on this forum and in life, that they consider people who have a lesser education not worthy. Also the thread is a comment on the subject of snobs: snobs would not be snobs unless they had formulated an opinion of another's level on the ladder, judged them and then sentenced them to being of a lower social standard than them.

I do not think this way, do not agree with thinking that way, but the fact remains there are people in this world who do, think its acceptable and make no secret of it.

I didn't go to college but later on after my divorce I took some college courses when I was raising my daughter. The courses I took required a lot of time my time and that time was taken from quality time with my daughter so I finished the courses I was taking but didn't go back.

I worked 10 years for a corporation who evaulates credit ratings for the business world, and 16 years in the legal field.

Even with that experience I don't fit in certain social circles for whatever reason people exclude me.

You probably know from postings I make in the threads that I don't care if I'm not accepted. I know who I am and I don't put on airs to be with the "in" crowd...dancing dog

that is supposed to say "no big deal" at the end

but I did want to add that seeking someone who values education is not snobbery - not in the US anyway

as a nation we so value education that higher education in this country is accessible to even the poorest of the poor as a vehicle for self and economic improvement - hardly snobbery
