Or any other type of electronic book reader? Are they any good? Are they as easy to read as a real book? Is there a wide variety of books available?

I have had a Kindle fro over a Year - absolutely brilliant. After seeing mine, my niece and daughter both got one. Had a friend got an ereader from China off the internet for $60 - absolute nightmare!!! Kindle is easy to use, easy to read - I love it - and so do my bookcases coz they were groaning under the weight of all my books.

Thanks for the feedback. And how much does it cost to download a book? How do you connect the thing to the internet to download books? Or do you have to use a memory stick? If a book has pictures or diagrams in it do they come up OK? Do they only offer fiction or are there reference books as well?

The kindle has Whispernet - you can connect just about anywhere - you dont need anything other than your kindle. You do have to have your credit card linked to your amazon account. There are thousands of books that are public domain and cost nothing to download. I think the most i have paid for a just released book was $14. I would usually pay about $50 for the new hard cover version. Kindle also allows you to try a chapter of a book before you buy it. The kindle also has the facility to read the books to you - it does sound robotic but i guess that will improve with technology.

Never so good as picking up a hardcopy book to give you an idea what you are really looking at. And so easy to pass on to others. After using computers for the last 40 years, there is nothing better than finding a book printed so many years ago.

Is "Target Area" by John Benning available? Probably not. So much excitement browsing through a bookstore and finding something different.cheering cheering banana banana dancing

I use a Galaxy tablet which is smaller than an iPad making it ideal for use as an eReader (around the size of a paperback book). I quickly got used to reading books on it and, like a kindle, you can adjust the settings to suit you (font, backlighting etc)

It's much more useful to me than a kindle as it's a mini computer - I have a sim in it for internet access, all my music is on it plus I can download books, movies and games directly onto it and it has an inbuilt camera.

It also acts as a wifi point for my laptop when I'm at home.

I always take it on the train with me for entertainment purposes and never go on hols without it. thumbs up

I mix it up a fair bit laugh wave

Because I'm a cheapskate lol I've never bought a heap of books (mainly due to the fact that I figure I'm only going to read them once dunno ) so I use my local library and only purchase ebooks that I've been dying to read.

Ebook prices have steadily risen just like everything else .. cheaps as chips when they first came out but now a new release can be $20+.

Had a sample of 'Here Comes the Sun', a new book about George Harrison, delivered to my tablet last night.

Could be a good read I reckon drinking

I just d/l the ebook onto my pc or netbook and transfer it onto a program called calibre. A CS pal of mine from Engerland who's a whizz at IT, got me onto it recently. Great when I travel for work if I want to read and lightens baggage weight....The covers d/l perfectly, as well as any other graphics.

I couldn't see how paying $14 for a bit of digital information is any better than having a physical copy of a title in your hands from BigW for $18.95?confused
At least you can trade a physical copy at your local book exchange and pick up a new release for around $7 after your trade in. You can't do that with a bunch of dots and dashes.idea

There are loads of ebooks sites confused

I commonly use Amazon though as their prices are hard to beat.

I have a whole wall of books, over the years I have amassed some beautiful volumes, they are like old friends that I often revisit.

It would be an absolute tragedy if people went all electronic.
And yes I know I am behind the times. blues
