serene56: I've never been to France but I think a little stone cottage in a village sounds idyllic and quite dreamy

Is there somewhere you'd like to try living life for a while if you could

wash2u: Never had a feel for London, Paris or Rome. But loved getting around in Europe and UK (why do we always separate them?). Vienna and Lucerne had 'feel' to them. Wherever you travel in im Europe or Uk (yeah, I said it), when you get away from the cities, people are just people.

But.....You are treated as a visitor spending money and not a local.

And same goes for Australia. One of my uncles lived in a small town and was always considered a "newbie" even after 40 years. Met a guy in Corowa last weekend and because I was only the 3rd person ever having heard of his birthplace, almost rated me as a relo (I have relos very close).

Hi Wash, I see we are into collecting rellies... laugh

But I do believe that Vienna would be a lovely place to see..

Merri, you would love Vienna, and would probably spend every night going to hotels. Many in the city put on 'tourist' nights. Dinner and a floor show of waltzes. Magic to listen to and to watch them glide around the floor. I had never realised that there are so manner differen waltzes.

I've seen video of people filling the town square with people waltzing in China, apparently it is quite common practice there

Hope they are playing violins and not those 'cat tails' they use.

A work colleague said they had a choice of buying a new Commodore or a cottage in the south of France, so they bought the cottage - sight unseen.

Your right Wash. Get outside the large populated areas and people are just people. If your an outsider and open and polite. They well help you out openly and warmly.
This was proved to me over and over again travelling around Ireland.

I have travelled a lot through the middle of Australia but so many more places to see. I have never had problems dealing with the locals as I have always treated them the way I expect them to treat me (open, honest and polite). It works. Only place I have never been really comfortable is Harts Range, NT. I have been in some very isolated communities in the outback but this is one scary place if you are not a local. There are a few other places around that do not like any outsiders coming in.

But go into some communities such as Pipalyajara and Amata in SA and they want to know more about why you have travelled all that way just to see a lot more of nothing. I met and travelled with 2 Aboriginals from that area, Gingemar and Frank, who taught me a lot about their culture. First and foremost was that you 'invite strangers to share your campfire.'

France is smaller than NSW, why live there,
No I much prefer my out of city block 10 minutes from work,
But when I retire a nice place up north on the coasts with a few acres’ would be nice!

Oh wouldn't that be marvelous! For me, however, it would be 'back-tracking' as I have passed through so many beautiful places but did not have that 'time to stop and smell all the roses'...I wish I had.
Now, no matter where I chose, it all would be the same in that I would have no one to ever share it with, but there are a few places that Id like to see or see again and perhaps be beautiful enough to compensate; one never really knows until one tries...even if only a beach shack on the sunny beaches o Cozumel...wine

I think we learn to savour moments as we grow older, knowing that we might not pass that way again maybe ..

And we capture those moments in our minds, no photos can ever do them justice hmmm

Having been to many beautiful beaches from the Mediterranean, Greek Islands to the eastern coastline of Oz, I am not too interested in visiting anywhere just for its lovely beaches.

Apart from the odd weekend in Mooloolaba or if Colin Firth called and asked me up to Hamilton Island for the weekend heart wings , I prefer to visit somewhere that has lots to see. Have always loved museums, galleries, exhibitions, palaces, places of interest and unique to that place.

Trying out the local food and wine is part of it of course wine wine wine
