Aldi is great for cheaper shopping. Okay, they have brands you never have heard of but most are from Aussie suppliers but rebranded. Their policy is to get locally produced stuff as much as possible, although some manufacturers don't want to be part of it and so they have to to the 2nd most popular product.

While I rarely go to Aldi (I like certain brands such as Vita-Brits), it has resulted in other supermarkets dropping their prices to stop losing so many customers.cheering cheering

Yes, they have been good in forcing the big two to lower their prices (well I've heard they have, but I rarely go to the big 2.) I do most of my shopping at Aldi and their strategy is basically to go to manufacturers and say "we want x million of your product but branded with our own brand. (they have a bunch of names like Sweet Valley, etc.) We won't stock your regular product so take it or leave it."
However one sneaky thing they do is to start with a high quality product, then, once people are buying it, they suddenly substitute a lower quality product. Well that's been my experience.
Once, they substituted my favourite Aussie tinned peaches with Chinese peaches. I noticed it as soon as I ate some. Had to put on my glasses to read in really fine print "Product of China".
They also stock tools, tv's clothing, etc, but only for a week or so until sold out. They rotate them. Tools are generally of OK quality but I've had some disappointments.

Same problem over here , a lot of people have no choice to go whole sale as they don't run a business . Got sick of buying my frozen peas indervidually wrapped , Got an RD1 card first ( Fonterra , sells milk and stuff ) to shop at Toops then nana from Toops dragged me over to their office to apply for a Toops card . Bliss , landed in shoppers heaven .

Some people are big fans of Aldi, I don't shop in their that much as I find you can't get everything you want so have to go to another supermarket and that pees me off having to shops twice? Like Wash I like certain brands - especially tea!

They do have some good basic stuff, like cleaning products, soft drinks, and I guess if you have kids school lunch type stuff is good?

They put out a brochure every week which I get in my mailbox for the specials, can't say I have managed to get there on any day to get a special??

And *cough cough* I have been told their choccy is ace blushing thumbs up

Enjoy micky.

Not an Aldi fan confused

Like Newlife said, on the odd occasion I've been there I've not bothered buying as I couldn't get everything I needed and who wants to go to two supermarkets dunno

I find the place creepy lol and can never find the things they advertise in the paper and on the board out front (plus the queues move like a snail).

tonyxf: One day we will end up with the big 3, then we'll need another chain to compete with Aldi.

Maybe Lidl will follow shortly...where one goes, the other comes along.laugh

they do sell some great tools, clothing, chocolate, best muesli (Balanced Right is second to none in my opinion) and compared to Coles and Woolies more limited choices, while there prices are usually very good.
Check out is usually a slow process, and they only restock tools and hardware on Thursday's so whats good goes pretty quickly.

dont go to Aldi at peak times, ie Saturday mornings the queue can be long

but..

their gourmet ice cream is loverly!

it can take a bit of time to get used to the way the store is laid out but each store is the saem so once you master the layout it becomes a lot easier.

if you like particular brands you will struggle, but also if you like to try different foods there is always a good selection. Pestos and tapanades, to european biscuits and lots of others.

Don`t be surprised if they don`t have everything you need, as you will probably still need to go to one of the other supermarkets. drinking

Aldi has nearly everything people need. They may not have the brand or the size you want but that is their policy of providing the goods at the lowest price they can obtain.

Aldi has about 1500 items on the shelves (excluding the "sales" items).

Coles and Woolies have at least 10,000 items in stock, often more. Yes, they have 5 different dog foods in 5 different sizes, each brand. Yes, they have 5 different Weetbix in 5 different sizes, in 3 brands. Yes, they have 5 different Corn Flakes in 5 different sizes, in 5 brands. Wait until you see the muesli range.

I like my Nescafe Instant coffee. I don't buy Pablo, Bushels, Royal or Black & Gold because I know what Nescafe is and how I like to make it. And do love my Robert Timms Coffee Bags.

I know I can buy cheaper at Aldi but I am after the brands I enjoy and know, and do thank Aldi for making the traditional supermarkets lower their prices to compete.thumbs up cheering thumbs up

Well, here is my take on Aldi.

Before they entered the Australian market the big two ripped off consumers as much as they wanted. There was no competition. Once Aldi came to our suburb our grocery bill dropped by at least $50/week for the family, and we only bought stuff we liked from Aldi.

However, they sell a lot of crap. Avoid their brand of technology as fire. I took back just about everything I bought from them except for a drawing tablet, which works OK, but not a good quality.

They sell cheap TVs with very low specs and as I heard the warranty service is shocking. When I shopped around for a washing machine I read the stories of people who bought washing machines from Aldi which developed a computer fault. And the nightmare these people had to go through to get them serviced!

I bought a 16MP digital camera. Took it back straight away, the images in full size looked like paintings, the camera had such a small sensor and low quality lenses.

The other problem is their specials. A few months ago I lined up for 45 minutes for an Android tablet they advertised even on TV. They only had about six (yes, SIX) tablets in the whole store and were sold out in seconds. Then they took names of people who wanted them. Bait advertising? I put my name down, they said I would get one in 30 days, but after more than 2 and a half months they called me about it and I said, thank you, but no, thank you. By that time Google released their tablet for the same price with much better quality and specs.

My other issue with them is if they have a good product you like, a few weeks later they change it to crap. They keep changing suppliers I suppose because of price. They don't care about quality. The toilet paper is cheaper than at Coles or Woolies, but they are unusable as they fall apart in your hand, you need to use twice as much. The breakfast cereal was great until one day the next lot I bought was tasteless. They regularly have rotten vegetables and fruit left on trays. The milk bottles regularly leak when you lay them down in the fridge.

One good thing until they change supplier. Their Brasilica coffee. The best I have tasted.
