Looking for ways to help... ( Archived) (25)

I am asking any member out there who might know: For some time now I've wanted to be of help (starting with online talking) to gay adult men who have or are being physically abused by a parent, step-parent, partner, or acquaintance. There doesn't seem to be a whole bunch of help, and many hide it or deny it. Are there internet services, etc... for this? Thanks

I'm straight so my response will be of limited interest, but put this down to curiousity:

How do you want to 'help' gay men? I'd have thought the obvious way would be to write to your congress representative / senator pressing them to vote for any law that seeks to expand the rights we possess to them

(Although the positive step recently taken by the US Supreme Court in striking down the DOMA act must reduce the needs of that community by a small degree at least....

Many of our states, Oregon included, already have such laws and policies. If it were that easy, I would have just done that. But it's not. I was thinking more in the way of just being a sounding board, etc...as my career and experiences have been that often just having some empathy and sensitivity for others' hardships can be a great help. Thanks for writing. It is not necessary to be gay to help, btw. thumbs up

I don't know if there is or not. You could google and see what you could come up with. Another way you can reach them on the internet is through maybe starting a blog or chat...the problem with that is trolls. Last thing someone needs when they are already in pain is to feel picked on. Is there enough in your area maybe to start a support group? Ask your mental health center they might could give you an idea if there is enough to start this. I had a problem medically once and asked my doctor about how many was going thru this in my area and if there was anyone for them to talk too. Actually if I had of listened to my doctors I would be typing this from a wheelchair right now. When I was told I would lose the ability to walk by the time I was 50 I felt like my world was over. I cried for me and for my husband at the time. But for some reason unbeknownst to the medical community I physically got better not just better but am in better physical shape than most my age. Determination I think. Best of luck. teddybear

There are so many different types of tragedies. I think the best example of a support group is Alcohol Anonimous. The structure of that organizations is simply amazing. So Im saying to help any cause this is probably the most effective organization to make it happen.
I just though as I was writing this. Is there a support group for gay alcoholics.I imagine there is. A person can be a non drinker to attend even. I have been to some and enjoyed the honesty.

Are you saying that you want to help gay men become straight
Or are you saying that you want to help them to get more gay playmates?

Your concern seems rather too specialized, Rohaan. I don't doubt you could find avenues, probably locally, to aid gay men with social adjustment. From there, you might seek to specialize. Doing it the other way around, though, sounds like trying to frame a picture before knowing what size it is.

Gavin de Becker, The Gift of Fear.

This book covers a wide range of abuses and might be useful background reading, even though its not specifically aimed at the LGBT community.

Its a damned good book.

Someone with appropriate writing skills should distillate a children's book out of it.
