BerrySmoothie: Yep, sadly so Life.

I just can't fathom how parents would allow their toddler to wade at the water's edge, at night, knowing the full risks involved?

Too early to say. All will be revealed eventually, I dare say.

That little boy is gone Berry and his parents are going to have difficult times ahead.

I've been to that Disney park in Orlando and to say their safety measures are abysmal is an understatement. I took my 3 YO son with me on a ride called "Space Mountain" There was a sign with a warning about the ride that I interpreted as hype to increase the excitement. There was nobody there to prevent me from taking him on that ride. I held him with 1 arm and held on with the other. He was crying and very scared and for the whole ride I was talking in his ear giving him reassurance that everything would be ok. When we got off that ride I was so angry I could have chewed a nail and spit out the pieces. The problem with these places is they hire HS kids who don't take the job seriously because they are only going to be there for the summer.

You really are a hoot. You are going to down high school kids and you as the adult. And I do use the term adult loosely after reading this decided to take the child and ignore the sign. Why did you not take your role as an adult seriously????mumbling

Happygolucky4u: I also feel badly for the family. The child was wading in about a foot of water. That is quite deep for a child of that age to be wading in while his parents close by tho were still on the embankment. The lagoon has several different canals that drain into it. And this is Florida. Not just Florida but the area is in gator country It really does not matter if the sign said gators in water or not. It did say do not swim????? If the sign had of been heeded then this would of not occurred. It is not rocket science the signs are placed there for a reason. So I hope people will maybe hear about this and realize "hey maybe they put up signs for a real reason" Instead of deciding to get mad at others for something that is actually their fault. They will have to live with the knowledge that they did not pay no attention to the sign. And I truly feel sorry for them. They were from out of town and I imagine do not know a lot about gators. They are attracted to splashing. Small children animals etc...Once they grab what they want they usually do go underwater. That is why this precious child most likely drowned. This time of year is mating season also. Were they bad parents? No I don't think so. We all have done something before that was a little careless and did not heed warnings. It was a bad thing that happened. What will define them as what kind of people they are is will they try and sue and profit from this terrible tragedy. Or will they have the character to admit the sign said do not swim just maybe we should of not let the child in. Then again there are those that never can see their wrong in things.

the sign said do not swim, but where was the sign located. it was dark, maybe they never saw it. and, isn't it possible that the sign was no where near where the family was enjoying their vacationing time on the beach. this was a resort with a water attraction. what do people usually do when water is present? they go in it. in addition, if you have no idea that alligators are present, do you really think the parents would allow their 2 year old little boy to swim at night if they were aware of the danger the lagoon presented. i think not.

disney is liable. they new that lagoon had gators in it. they had performed sweeps to remove them in the past. that is an admission to knowing of the dangers they were dealing with. their idea of alerting the public about those dangers falls short. the sign was unable to be seen in the dark. maybe there wern't enough signs. perhaps if the sign or signs were lit up with the words danger, alligator residence do not swim, a life may have been saved. perhaps after disney settles the upcoming (i think ) lawsuit they can become more responsible by giving every guest a brochure when checking in at the front desk that goes over the inherent dangers of going down to the lagoon. the front desk clerk is responsible for going over the dangers and asking for a signature from each guest that they have indeed been made aware. disney is responsible for the horrific death of this little boy. the horror the toddler must have felt in his last few moments. and for the parents and the sister to leave that resort without the family being whole, is a tragedy that should have easily been prevented.

I admit I was stupid for ignoring that sign, ok? My point is someone should have been there to keep a stupid jerk like me from taking a kid on that notoriously dangerous ride. Space mtn should be closed down! I had never even been on a roller coaster before and to find myself on one that is inside a building and then have the lights turned off goes way beyond anything I ever expected to be subjected to. You say I ignored the warning sign. I'm saying there needs to be more than just a sign. Just like that "no swimming" sign didn't keep that 2 YO from a horrible death.

Actually they just said on the news the sign was in close proximity. How close that is I do not know. What I do know is there are signs all over that area even some telling people to keep their children close because of wildlife. Not alligators but I would think wild life would cover that dunno If they get a penny for this it would be because Disney does not want to go through the hassle and settle. In a court of law and all those signs and warnings I don't think it would go through a court scrutiny. I myself would of never let my children swim in a dark unfamiliar area. But what one deems as good sense others might see as being overly protective. I was not the perfect parent I don't believe none of us are. And I also have been raised around and raised my children around gators. So I am sure that plays a big reason why I do not. And no I don't fear gators. I respect them. I would of hated to of been those parents. No matter what I don't think that sight will ever leave their eyes. blues Also not that it matters on many of those sign it says Disney is not responsible for wild life attacks in that area. Quite a few areas have those signs. I wish I could remember word for word how the signs read. I am sure sooner or later if not already they will end up on the internet. (the signs) I think your idea about how to handle and make the situation more safer in the future is very interesting. I can here the cha ching for Florida tax collectors now. They will def go up on the prices for that. Sadly what is a family theme park area most the parks have gotten unaffordable for the average family.

I have not done space mountain. Don't think I would want to. I did the big coaster at Universal a couple of years ago. Never again. Wish someone was there to tell me not to. crying I succumbed to peer pressure and got on. sigh
Did you know there are over a million alligators in Florida? Yes someone actually got paid good money to find this out. One thing for sure if all gator areas were to be signed we would be one big sign. But then I think my area has more than the Disney area. Gators not signs. hmmm I am just unsure how much more is reasonable warnings. We post flags at the beaches here. Big boards with warnings when sharks are migrating and place life guards there and do you know still the life guards will have to go tell people to get out of the water. We also have many swim at own risk beaches. No guards and most times no signs. I think there are many things I would of done differently raising my children if I had been more mature than my young years back then. I know I use to let the kids ride in the back of the pick up truck. Now it is against the law here. But what kind of laws could we introduce to wake parents up enough to the many dangers (not just gators) of Florida water. sigh

Absolutely. At some point we have to take responsibility and accountability for our actions instead of pointing the finger all the time and blaming others. We can't expect the world to protect us from ourselves at every single moment in every single situation.

lifeisadream: I am aware of gators in Florida Rohan, what puzzles me is: how in earth a Disney Lagoon would have gators when there is people and lots children around and some people just do not follow safety protocols.
My esperience about Disney is lots of security measures.Thank you Rohan, Monte and CapNemo.
I get there were signs of not swimming and I would guess the resort had made them sign a form with information about the risks of gators.

If there are gators in a lake, they are wild and big animals and there is always risks around them.
I am not unsympathetic to the heartbreak of and for those parents. It is mournfully sad. What bothers me no end is this trend of toddlers and even younger dying by being left in a car, left to wander into water, traffic, etc...This is on the RISE, despite all the horror stories and warnings. People need to be vigilant about their children!! Youngsters need to be watched ALL THE TIME. Since we as a society are armed with knowledge that they are slippery, and get away fast, then it is exponentially necessary to keep them in physical parental control. (It's not like the parents of today don't have the info--there is PLENTY.) I really am not a mean person, but if you ask me, given the fact that society has ample knowledge of how kids behave, there is NO reason to let these events happen. NONE.

I'm sorry for this families loss.

I'd be reluctant to pile on with accusations against the parents, without knowing the facts. That's a thing we do to make ourselves feel safer and not so out of control in life.

We just had a small child drown in a local lake about a week ago.

I've been around kids and water my whole life. There's probably 30 lakes with in ten minutes of my home, and the majority of my childhood friends lived on them.

People are up in arms about how this could happen. Those people are victimizing parents who just lost their child.

I know the lake it happened in. I understand how it happened, and it could happen to almost every family at that beach on any given day.

Water comes with a risk of drowning.

We do things to manage that risk, but we cannot eliminate it.

toddler on same beach as accident.

(open the link provided in new tab)

this video shows that the parents could have easily not seen this sign especially at night. in addition, they could have been further away down the beach where there are no signs.

You are just not getting it. The information is there. Everyone agrees that toddlers can get away easily. So--be vigilant. You are incorrect. It CAN be prevented. (Plenty of families know this and are able to prevent it.) I said I am not unsympathetic. Yet, how will this be kept from happening if people just continue to be lackadaisical. Little kids need to be watched ALL THE TIME. I stand by this, and will continue to do so.

Extreme Parenting: To Leash or Not to Leash?

Thanks for the info. I read through it. This topic has come up in conversation with my own family and friends. Initially, I admit I was very much against it, believing that if a child is being brought up appropriately there should be no need for a leash. HOWEVER--we are in an age where the incidences of illness/condition induced inability to follow directions and stay focused. Challenged children who cannot adhere to mainstream directives. Personally, I do not like the idea, but I can clearly see where there are instances where leashing may be the only real solution. It depends on the cognitive ability of the child. So, would I find it acceptable? In some cases. Yet, I would not approve of it if and when other methods work.

I will willingly deflect any negative comments made to me for the sake of getting parents to wake up and smell the coffee. Preventing children from being killed by alligators and gorillas is a WAY higher priority of mine than being concerned about "hurting someone's feelings". In fact, the two cannot even be compared. If you are out and about with toddlers then you need to be ON IT. ALL THE TIME. Every split second, because that's all it takes.
