Also a lot of Irish own pubs and hotels there now.
The reason being, most would refuse to pay after a drunken night out and start trouble! It wasn't worth the hassle, so they just refused to serve them.

What ! they didn't have their cards behind the bar
annaroach: Kids that are not controlled , and are allowed to run around , are a potential danger to others,,,,,,,,, yes i agree
They're also incredibly irritating and many parents these days seem to think it's ok to allow their children to do this.
On the other hand, people who like to take their pets out and about with them are usually cognisant of their comfort and have trained them to behave well outside of the home
I'd much prefer to dine in the company of a socially aware Shih Tzu rather than the unruly child of Shihtty parents
This is the thing,, what if something like that happened.
Scratching cats and dogs,, fleas, cat hairs.
It would be the same people that have their cats and dogs in their beds,,
don't get me started on that !!
Majority of people have pets Anna, that doesn't mean they'll take them to a restaurant... I have a cat, it doesn't have fleas, it's even allergic to them and it much cleaner than many people ... I don't mind pets in an open space restaurants, in some countries you'll see plenty of tourists enjoying feeding strays who like to circulate the restaurants ...
annaroach: Its just crazy Chris,,,, People are trying to humanise animals
Like dressing them up,, letting them sleep with them etc,, all wrong ,in my opinion
It's common sense. I'd like to believe that no responsible proprietor would allow a great dane to crash around his fancy establishment. The only worrying thing about leaving this matter to the discretion of individuals is we're talking about the Irish.

In my opinion, genuine animal lovers are few, the rest following the trend, for just having a pet.
When i ask people,if aware of laws concerning owing a pet, most say,the have an idea that, there are laws about pets, and when ask again,if have read the laws concerning pets, most reply,(proximity 99.9% ), No they have not. That's figures,as to why some have a pet for few months, then, getting tired for looking after their pet, with the final result the abandon pet to roam the streets.

My dogs don't have fleas either.
Responsible animal owners know how to look after their animals properly
I wouldn't take my dogs out to dinner with me But I would have no problem if somebody took their dog into a cafe with them and it lay under the table.
Unfortunately its incremental. A dog under the table, sure no problem. a morsel here or there being slipped to a well behaved dog, hey no problem either. Then a dog on somebodies lap or being carried, umm a bit close to my food... somebody letting their dog lick the plate, ewww
And the death of a thousand cuts- he/she can take her dog so I'll bring mine... Well there's 2 or 3 dogs there already, and mine is really cool... Somebody slips a morsel or drops a sausage, and there are half a dozen dogs fighting.
KremaP: Exactly Molly... My first thought was who on earth will have their dog inside a restaurant...
When I am in Spain, my friend's dog goes everywhere with me. He is welcome in all shops and restaurants. Normally I sit outdoors in cafes, but if I wanted to sit indoors having a drink, he would still be welcome. They usually bring a container of water for him to drink too.
But I still wouldn't bring him out on a formal dinner with me

Same here, open space restaurants, coffee shops, hairdresser and many more places have no problem with pets... I have regular furry visitors coming to my office and I always have treats and water for them... Bigger dogs are welcomed to stay outside on the terrace, enjoying the shade of the trees... Everyone is happy ...
