The world today is a much different world to what it was 40 years ago. People were more civilized, and tolerant. Today,it's all about ME,ME,ME. People want the rewards, without making the effort. When I see young women begging,I think"surely they can find some work". The numbers are increasing, with each passing day. I don't expect to be around in another 20 years, and I don't think I would want to. Keep the chin up!
there's an imbalance between rights and responsibilities(at least in the West). Malignant narcissism is pervasive and rampant and influencing so much policy, the cult of social justice is unhinged and out of control and playing a dangerous game of common enemy identity politics against anyone who doesn't subscribe to their strict dogma, this is being exacerbated by social media. Just my two cents
Hoober: And the World 40 years ago was much different to the World 40 years previous to it. I guess the lesson is: The World changes. Who'd have thought it?
Just the type of answer I would expect, from a Brexit supporting Tyke

We can't compare the post-war garden with the competition and speed of the cutthroat 21st century.
Development basically means that we become more like the New Yorker over time. Shallow, plastic and more urbanised.
The greatest generation dug deep into their own pockets to provide posterity with affordable housing and build great estates in the suburbs, to create 9-5 jobs for life(with a union, too) - m**turbating on the toilet half the working day was no reason to get sacked in the 1960s, and even if you did nobody would bat an eye if you went on the social for 40 years.
And in the old days uni was free if you were any damn good. I agree with the garden on this one. What good has profit-seeking higher education done for anyone? A whole new field for diploma mills to be opened up - diploma mills that were once a perfectly good indoor swimming pool - packed to the rafters with debts and dud students.

I was brought up with values and know that if I want something, I have to work for it.
With rights comes responsibility - why did parents not teach their kids that?

In the 60s the greatest generation was at its peak of workers and voters !!!!!

A lot of it is down to the breakdown of the family unit. A lack of balance and a lack of male influence on children growing up - and before anyone jumps the gun i'm not placing the blame on women(OR men) - but rather this is a societal issue as a whole. Really coming to the fore in the 60's, the idea of 'rights' was a cultural force, and necessary, as there were many aspects of life that discriminated, mainly as related to race and gender. This was a great thing to happen and many victories were had. However, as is often the case, such forces often don't know when to stop, and in recent times the desire to fight for rights has in many cases done more harm than good (think transgender toilets; or affirmative action). There needs to be a balance between rights and responsibilities, as well as a good dose of common sense, but sadly that really isn't the case nowadays. Very little focus is put on responsibilities and as a result many children are growing up to be narcissistic, angry, and cynical.
