How can I make this up to you An old woman called Gaia I took from you all I pleased More a robber than messiah Finding a field full of treasure A drink from your fresh brook From the nectar of your bees The honey made of your flowers I washed in your cold streams I dug into your fertile earth Planting a vineyard of pleasure I caught fish and trapped game Cooking them over an open fire I nourished my body, soul, and mind Never once did I pay for a thing Because you were everything to me Everything I would ever need Now I look back and wonder Whatever happened to my plunder For now it is my turn as well To give back as well I can But there is nothing left asunder Just a life that has perished When all such life so flourished Now only the orange smoke haze Drifts over darkened charred remains
Yankee, so sad what mother nature has given us is being lost. Fires are started by careless people but also by lighting. Here in sunny Florida where hurricanes come and go. I wish all this water pouring down would hit the midwest states to cool the atmosphere. Nice write. SM
Kathy, People are already aware that destroying our environment with greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation and uncontrolled development of carbon sinks will only lead the world in one direction in that its destruction only follows. A simple truth!
SM I have read that its so hot out in the western United States, that even when rain clouds appear, the temperature at the surface is so hot, the rain evaporates before it even hits the ground!! The same is also true in other parts of the world right now.
Mizzy, You are lucky to live in Ireland.......much of your microclimate is controlled by the northern Atlantic Ocean and it will help moderate the effects for global warming trends realized elsewhere with greater effect. Even so.....the storms will likely intensify in force.

Its a problem but to me not the collapse of civilisation, wildfires have always been around but the scale seems unusual. Adapting to 2 degrees rise in temperature is not one of life's big challenges, but having the systems to limit it to that is the challenge.
Ocean.... precisely the biggest issue. Not so much simply stopping the problem, but prevention. Like in Florida, prescribed burns have been used in forest management for years; but that's hardly the case in California. Not just a hotter, drier climate, more fire prone forests; but past practices come into play....sometimes with catastrophic consequences.
