Well you didn't put Ireland, Spain, France or Germany and these countries have the highest rates of savings per person which would make their people quite wealthy.
However if you were to go by how much land individual owned, Australians would be right up there as so many own large swathes of this place, unfortunately we don't save a lot and are quite cash poor.
The next best savings country on your list would be Sweden, so I'll pick that one as opposed to the 4 higher saving countries I mentioned above.

Like Americans, us Australians seem to have missed out on the savings lessons in school and only found out about consumerism. Maybe our advertising and general ethos lends itself to spending every last cent we have and then some on the credit card to the point where we are all chasing our tails keeping up with the interest payments.

No government comes to mind.
Clearly, your Australian friend has not been paying attention for the past 40 years or so, especially the past five years.

Since jumping off the Malaysian bandwagon, Singapore leapt well ahead in the late 20th Century.

Switzerland is expensive but the govt has ensured that its citizens are well looked after for their whole life.

Antartica must be the best, there are no politicians and all the super powers are doing their best to keep it that way.

St Peter was having a stroll around Heaven one day with God. Looking down to Earth, he said "God, look at Scotland. You have given them beautiful glens, beautiful lochs, magnificent deer, wonderful highlands and a bountiful supply of fish. And to top it off, you have given them oil as well."

God replied, "yeah, I know. But look who I gave them for neighbours."rolling on the floor laughing

They have cut their debt in half in the last year and have the Euro bank paying their bills!

If they sneeze the Euro bank gets a cold!

The current Federal Government is a collection of Fabian Marxists, who are incompetent, grossly wasteful with public money and who betray this country at every opportunity by either design or stupidity. They could not manage a coin-operated toilet successfully.
The current Prime Minister is liar who is a life-long member of communist organisations, such as the Fabian Society.
Australia has lost control of its borders because of weakness and stupidity and the economy is collapsing . . . but all that the Fabian Socialists want to do is impose upon the country the insane policies of the Greens.
Doing a good job? Your friend is either insane, a member of the loonie left (which also means that he is insane), has no clue, or has not been paying attention.

Isn't 'poor' all of Aust????? Oops, WA has massive minerals and gases being exported. No, not them. Qld has just sold mega-billions in coal deals to India. No, not them. Leaves Vic a poor 3rd trying to flog off the brown coal to India and China.

Hang on. Tas is selling electricity to Vic, NT is selling cattle to Indonesia, SA is staying out of it. Only leaves Vic & NSW to compete for the poor stakes. It is neck and neck as who wants to finish first ..... or last as the case may be.doh doh doh doh
