but seriously, I thought about something while I parked on one side of the downtown area....nw actually, and as I ran across an overpass I passed 2 people with signs asking for money, I saw a main laying down wedged next to the fence that keeps you from falling down into the freeway, there was a young black dog sitting up positioned on the mans chest. The dog looked as though it was guarding the small area but in all its' grandeur the dog seemed as though it was somewhat embarrassed and worried what was to come of his master. The man had 2 wooden pallets under the sleeping bag and just lay there. I am seeing friends, not just strangers losing their place in this world. When everything is relevant and one person is building a new Recording Studio down in Cabo and the next is losing his mind, his wife and his children and meanwhile surprised that I am not going to go smoke a bit of grass for old times sakes. I pray that I die before I ever find myself in this picture. That is unless it is inconvenient for anyone. I will fight like hell before I let anyone or thing take away the security from myself or what is left of my family. I will sacrifice myself it I believe that is the last choice. I do not think that is the case. I think that this point in life is yet one more time to look around and change to stay alive. I believe that this is a time that we will see big things happening from ordinary people in a tyrannical place.

Financial security means little when self-respect is gone. I can't hold on to my self-respect if I sacrifice others or my principles for financial security. And I have been in situations where all I had left were the clothes I had on...so I speak from experience.
I hope I would never find myself in this position........and I empathise with those who are. Better to look at why you have arrived at those circumstances...and make decisions from there.

rohaan: Think about it: Everyone who works for someone else has to weigh this one way or another. When you clock in/punch in/sign in/scan company I.D., whatever,-- you have just in effect sold your "freedom" for a period of time. You are doing it willingly, because you are trading it for money. No, it isn't brutal, like the enslaving of people to do the work some did in Colonial and pre-Civil War America, but it is still a tacit agreement to give up what you want and do what someone else wants for eight, ten, whatever hours. I touch a generation of desperate U.S. citizens (think the Dust Bowl days/The Depression), who worked 12 hour days in exchange for a pound of hamburger. People worked long days every day of the week in exchange for a simple cabin and were only allowed to take their wages in 'chits' to be used only at the company store.{{ "Saint Peter don'tcha call me, 'cause I can't go, I owe my soul to the company store"...}} My grandfather was acquainted with a man who worked for three years during that time, for five cents a day, one small meal per day, and was allowed to sleep in the barn. To answer your question, I don't know. We don't know our depths until the hour they are called upon.
Well put Ro, unless you are faced with it, how can you answer... If you are in a far off land where you just exist, what would you give up for that opportunity?

OH COME ON, DON'T BE TOO CYNICAL ABOUT HOW THOSE PEOPLE MANAGE THEIR TIME IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO PAY THEIR BILLS.

Not so fast. It's all relative. If a person has the choice, he or she will not be encumbered by working for someone else. Being realistic is not cynicism. I see what you are saying, but no matter how kind, gentle, philanthropic the employer, he still holds the cards. Your options are, at last, terminal, when you work for another person. They hold "the hammer". It is beneficial and healthy to recognize this; one need not be depressed by it, but it cannot be discounted, as that is the way it is. I did it for years, most people have to.

yea, they hold the hammer..but they're taking the risk.
unlaoised: yea, they hold the hammer..but they're taking the risk.
Here's what I think (not sure, though) is being missed: I GET IT! Of COURSE they're taking the risk. If I were the company owner, I'd think the same way they do! I've THOUGHT the same way they do! My comments were observations, not criticisms. I guess I was just trying to say that we DO sacrifice for financial security, and saying we don't is illusionary. It's L * I * F * E .

no no...it wasn't taken as criticism, and my post was simply an observation, also not a judgement
