Rogerzoekt: The minute you get in a poll or thread, it fills up with a lot of regular visitors, who than use your poll or thread for a private get together and start or take over the conversation so the thread is being filled up by a discussion between 2 or 3 people with absolutely no connection whatsoever to the subject discused in the poll or thread.
Without kicking too much legs or causing too much commotion, can i suggest a chat box, email or maybe even phonenumber exchange so these people can talk in privacy??
or they can simply come up with some ideas of their own and start their own threads. I know what you mean....I think a little bit of that is OK but the off topic discussions should not hijack an entire topic.
I know I am also guilty of it.. I don;t mind when it happens on my threads so long as the original topic is not lost....

It has always been a great way to kill the thread; certain people love to 'hijack' certain types of threads or by certain people...

If the OP feels serious enough about their thread or poll, they should actively participate to keep it on topic and maintain the order they desire. It's not unusual for people to banter about other things when the OP appears to not care. There's a saying "When the cat's away, the mice will play" and that's pretty much what happens.

Keeping a thread in order, that could be a challenge.

You should be thankful that anyone enters your threads at all.
As long as thy aren't fighting why worry about things so much.Take a few real deep breaths and let them out every slowly and you will see the stress just melt away.
But isn't that what the forums are intended to do - create a space for people to talk to each other and connect on whatever level they wish to?
I see thread topics as operating in the same way as conversation topics at dinner parties do, a way of getting people who may not know each other to start talking to one another. Ice-breakers if you will.

I have to agree, that is what makes this so wonderful, it is bringing in different points of view, going off an different tangents, but in the end, it is people having a conversation and getting to know each other like nothing else can, considering the distance between some of us.
Most of the actual poll topics are terrible/boring/incomprehensible. If regs didn't start chatting about others things, the polls would die an early, deserved, death.

so true. Sadly if I was at this dinner party I would be the one with a powerpoint presentation or armed with my Iphone selfies.
