Juneau: Am I the only person on the planet that can't stand soap operas?
Every time I turn on the tv they are either on, or they are being discussed, or their story lines are being debated on national news!
I know. I used to find it hard to understand people being so engrossed with them. There's usually about 450 characters anyway and until you watch one for a week or so and understand the mechanics of what's going on, there's little appeal.
Once you understand the background story they can become addictive. I'm a recent convert to Bold and the Beautiful. They're not to be disected on any kind of intellectual level that's for sure. On BB they all sleep with each other and they rarely leave town, it's amazing the kids don't have genetic mutations.

OMG - that's funny. But it would make an interesting story line.
Personally for myself, I only watched one when I was in high school when it was a break time ..... got out of it shortly thereafter and haven't watched any since that time. Actually rarely watch tv now ..... I spend far more time on the computer and that I do want to curtail as well.
People are so snobbish about soap operas, so much so that I wonder who the millions of viewers actually are.
I don´t watch them here in Spain, in fact I don´t watch much tv at all, but my mother loves all the Brit soaps and I watch them with her when I visit the UK. The longest Brit soap is Coronation Street and some mighty fine well-known actors have appeared in it over the...how long now? 30 years? it´s been on air.
During my travels I´ve seen some terrible soaps, the Brazilian and American being the worst for the ridiculous plots and extremely poor acting.
Being on here sometimes is like being a part of one of those awful soaps, or reading unbelievable storylines don´t you think?
I don't think it is a snobbish thing, to not like soap operas. I am sure the actors involved are good at what they do (well, some of them anyway ). It's just that it appears to be the same old story lines over and over again, year in, year out! And certainly the British ones just seem to dwell on the negative aspects of the human psyche all the time!! jealously, anger, spite, violence, affairs etc etc etc! There is enough of all of this on the news programs every day, and in real life, so why would anyone choose to put themselves through hours of watching all of what's wrong with society on soap operas I just don't get it

I think it´s even worse: because people watch these shows that thrive on negative emotions and present us with characters, who are seemingly incapable of reacting appropriately in any situation, these behavioural patterns are copied by some in the audience.
In other words: the drama and shouting matches as seen on TV influence people to overreact in similar ways in real life, simply because they´ve seen it on TV so many times. It´s sad and frightening, but that´s of course JMO.
Raynew1959: I take that back, I used to run home from grammar school to watch one particular soap, Dark Shadows
yup did get into all my children as a kid one summer pool didnt open till 1pm it was on till 1pm grandma would take us to pool brooke was doin the help lol she was hot back then/70s.
