....I figured, I could either sit and watch a movie tonight, or I can sit and watch the road, listen to the radio, buy some gas, and buy some Q-Tips. The Q-Tip trip actually sounded okay.

My vote is on bitterness. ...maybe it was the end of the month too. 
Some of my clothes I have had for 20 years and...well...the 20 year old pair of pants have been officially retired recently.
About the bitter observation, that was just my assumption on the premise stated in the story. Now that you bring up a woman's side to life, you might be right...she might have been late for a giblet search and a good ole fashion stuffing meal.
