What would you do if you loved someone and suddenly became paralyzed?

Martia, that is very sad. It is cruel that the guy runs away leaving the sick wife behind, but even worse that he makes her pregnant and leaves her behind with all the pain of labour and the burden of caring for the newborn - at the time when a woman needs her man's support the most. She must have been desolated.

Hi Abagail, your brother is a great guy!

The question was meant to refer to you, not the other party. What would you do if *you* became paralyzed and you loved someone? I think this is just as hard.

The question was meant that *you* became paralyzed. Peter Blundy had a wife and lots of mates. He was hoping to have children. After the accident he lost his wife and all his mates.

This is a very painful question we don't want to face. And what's worse is when reality strikes and we need to reevaluate our lives. Suddenly everything changes. The future fades away and the harsh reality takes its place.

There was a man who was full of plans, whose life changed when he visited a friend for a barbecue. Leaning against the balcony he didn't know what was to come, that it was the last time he stood and talked...

How would you face such a situation?

A very touching story - beautifully told

Here is a man who once lived life to the full, having a wife he dreamed about having children...

...until one day he fell and landed with his head on the concrete... and now lives with a locked-in syndrome...

He lost EVERYTHING, all his mates, and his wife, everything he had in life.

His story is beautifully co-authored with his very talented speech pathologist, Katrine Elliott. Read it via the Index of Articles page. Once there, please, don't forget to say 'Hi' to him. It would be very encouraging to him:

Do you think you are having it hard?

Thanks Sonofrock :)

Well, a lot of people are hurting and do you wonder why politicians don't understand it? Well, they spend hundreds of thousands of tax payer dollars on overseas travel.

Tony Abbott had a 33 thousand dollars phone bill!!! God grief!

So jobs are diminishing and unemployment is on the rise. Now is there anyone who still think the $200/week dole payment is bad and a waste of money? This amount is supposed to cover your housing, bills and food, as well as travel to a job interview 100 km away and back home until you get another job. If you have no resources this cannot be done, do the maths.

In a bad economy people will be out of work longer. Businesses are going broke, shops closing down. The statistics lie about unemployment.

Many experts have called on the government to fix the dole payment problem because it is ridiculously low, but Labour has chosen to ignore them. Howard earlier got away with it because the economy was booming, so there were plenty of jobs and little need for the dole.

Today's reality is fast changing. With Gold Coast real estate being down by about 40% and the economy sluggish inactivity on the part of the government will create a crisis.

Maybe we should start fixing the system by limiting how much politicians can spend. Make them accountable.

Here is a man who had it all, and in an unfortunate moment of his life he lost everything - EVERYTHING....

Read his story, how he recovered from depression and managed to face life again - despite suffering from locked-in syndrome.

Please, pass this around to your loved ones that they may gain strength from his very encouraging story.

And once there, please, spare a few moment and say a few encouraging words to him in the comment section.

RE: Just for Gina- because she deserves it!

"Massive fortnightly cheques"? The dole is a bit over $200/week. This should cover housing and all bills, food, medication and travel to interviews for up to 100km until they eventually find job.

Would you live on it? This has not been indexed to inflation for ten years. By any measure it is not massive at all.

Add to this that most unemployed are required to work for 20 hours a week with charities - this works out for $10/hr when the national minimum wage is around $18.

Being unemployed is a financial and disaster and a health hazard because cannot even afford medication on it.

In QLD it costs about $18 to get to Brisbane from the Gold Coast for an interview. Just think about this massive payout for those on the dole... and whether you would survive on it for a few weeks or months without additional funds to touch.

RE: Hate Computers.

When in so much trouble you can always try this:

or if you have plenty of resources:

Burn the first as an ISO image to a CD and the second to a DVD. Boot your computer from one of these disks and you will have a complete operating system running from disk. No service pack, no IE8.

To get the full power, you can install the system from the first one and after installation add thousands of applications for free using the package manager.

I have just setup this system for a friend and he is very excited about it.

RE: Garden Flats

The unemployed will share accommodation with others and people on lower income will do the same. Young people are moving back to their parents. This will free up a lot of rental units and will lead to a dramatic oversupply, which in turn will lead to falls in rents, which in turn will accelerate the fall in real estate prices. Prices and rents cannot hold up for long during difficult economic times.

What speculators have done over the last 10-20 years is daylight robbery. They robbed everyone's present and future. I think most of them will have their wealth evaporated and go belly up.

I am not very fast when it comes to music :) We can discuss this via email...

Blue Voyage - improved version

The music was really the organic part of the movie. Really nice.

The death of freedom and innovation...

They do keep their laws within their shores. Apparently they believe the whole world falls within their shores.

The death of freedom and innovation...

The problem with these laws is it makes you liable for someone else's crimes. So if a spammer in a comment to my blog leaves a link to copyrighted content, I can be extradited and jailed. So I become responsible for keeping my site clean, which would be way too expensive even for companies like Google, let alone to Wikipedia. The only way to protect yourself is to shut down your site. The above laws would kill the internet as we know it.

That is where I listened to it. The theme was used for 2001 Space Odyssey...

I love that music :)

For the sake of those who do not know I should have mentioned that this is an electronic instrumental / new age composition.

RE: I was chatting to a woman yesterday

Maybe because people in the Western societies are alienated from each other. We often don't even know our neighbours. In churches you get to meet many people and can build friendship. Some church services are even entertaining.

Where else do you get these? Where else can people go to? Where else do you make friends. Let's be honest, apart from the pub the options are not so great.

It may make sense to start some kinds of community houses where people can go to and get involved in various functions without charging them a high entry ticket price.
