It is still common in other countries, Spain for example.
Interestingly, in Barcelona, the trees are full of descendants of escaped exotic birds like parrots and parakeets. It is strange to see and hear those birds in the trees in the middle of the city.
I'm not a zoo fan, but they have changed their outlook on recent years. The welfare of the animal is put above the entertainment value now.
However I do prefer wildlife parks where the animals can roam more freely.
The best would of course be for the animals to be in their natural habitat, but us humans have basically taken away that option. Between encroachment into their space by farms or so-called development, we have decided that we can't share space with other creatures.
Just today I saw photos from England of hedgerows and trees covered in netting to stop birds building nests - all in the name of development. It is a disgrace.
