At least in olden times, the king/leader used to lead his troops into battle. The pawns still died, but at least the leaders fought and died too.
It depends where it is. In a romantic little restaurant set put for couples, then it would feel strange. But if it were in an Asian street food place, or a pub. Then it'd be fine.
