Former Miss Canada finalist has become the first person in the world to graduate with a Masters degree in The Beatles. Canadian singer Mary-Lu Zahalan-Kennedy, 53, was one of the first students to sign up for the course on the Fab Four when it launched at Liverpool Hope University in March 2009. Twelve full-time students joined the Master of Arts course in 'The Beatles, Popular Music and Society' and Mary-Lu is the first of her class to graduate.
Your daughter and most of us here fortunately have the luxury of not having to put such prejudice and barbarism as a priority in our lives. Mothers in other countries unfortunately have to face this battle every day of their lives, and face it they most certainly do. If only those of use who have become complacent in our greedy lives could have an ounce of that courage then we could change so much of what is drastically failing in our own wealthy society.
A glass or two of red wine with dinner and two small squares of dark chocolate.
Luxuries vary from person to person though don´t they? For example, I only ever use a particular brand of shower gel which is relatively expensive, but for someone financially better off than me it wouldn´t be considered a luxury. For those less well off it would be unaffordable and therefore deemed a waste of money!!
Yes Pat I understand that, and I´m sorry your thread has morphed into something you clearly did not intend. However, for me it´s rather ironic that Americans, and others rather surprisingly who support the death penalty, which as I´ve already said in my mind is just as barbaric, can criticise purely on the misguided grounds of religion.
Well I´ve been travelling and worked abroad for 11 years as an English teacherTurkey, Poland, Portugal, Russia. Spain, and I´ve had the time of my life. I´m now pretty much settled in Spain because I adore the country, however I couldn´t resist a working contract in Russia for a couple of years not so long ago even though I retained my roots in Spain during the time I was away.
I´d advise anybody to get out there and see the world if at all possible.
You´re right, for me too any kind of capital punishment is barbaric. Is stoning any more barbaric than killings meted out in many states of America? In my opinion no.
It´s not just about education either as others have said. Extremely well educated Muslims have advocated stonings or other punishments. Culture plays a huge part and this is what takes many years to change.
Tis true, the working class hero hasn´t existed since the unions lost their clout, and of course because of the reduction or necessity for much of the unskilled labour force. Not only because what unskilled work left is being done more cheaply abroad, but also because of technical/automated developments which has resulted in the loss of many jobs.
Retraining is the key, but I agree this has not been foremost in the minds of the politicians or employers. It is also not a reasonable option for workers of a certain age. To be on the scrapheap in one´s 40´s or 50´s must be devastating, particularly now that we are being forced to work until our late 60´s.
Exactly, as V said everyone needs a swift kick in the pants occasionally as a reminder. This particular person would surely not return so many times in his many guises if he were ignored, and he is quite dangerous imo as he continually steals other member´s photos. For that reason I hide mine when I finish posting here.
Nice suggestion, but each time I´ve posted a pic for a fun thread similar to your suggestion, and others, it gets removed almost immediately by the mods.
Is this thread in response to the thread about nudity in the classroom in America?
Really, all these stories are probably so hyped up by the media, and can you honestly imagine most kids of today being terrified to such an extent with the scenario you posted? Pêrhaps one or two, but I really don´t believe teachers would spring such a thing on their students without any kind of forewarning, and they had been studying WW2 beforehand according to the article.
However, I´ve just remembered the Orson Welles and War of the Worlds scam, so anything is possible I suppose, though most of the hype about that was found to be over dramatised in the end.
No it´s not the limited space, my flat is huge, far too big for me actually, but I´m on the 5th floor and my balcony is bricked up and closed so it serves as a very sunny conservatory with big windows. It´s like a greenhouse in the summer so I suppose I could grow other things if I thought about it.
Vegis??? If you mean veggies....sorry couldn´t resist, then no, I live in a flat and don´t have a garden. In the past I grew tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, etc, but now I have to be content with a few herbs sadly. I do have friends who grow their own veggies and fruit, and one of my students has a vineyard so luckily I get lots of grapes and other organic freebies.
We all have our own definition of intelligence, and I think most define the term in an academic sense.
If for example someone can speak five languages, most people, rightly or wrongly, would think wow he/she is intelligent. I for one think of intelligence as intellectually bright, but I also acknowledge that this doesn´t always equate with street smart which is just as important in many ways.
It´s not a talent or a means of gaining power. How many people in power would you really think of as being intelligent? Very few!
The King´s Speech
I loved it, a superb film, and Colin Firth is yummy even with a stammer.
