Nah I understood! I miss him too, he was a good guy.
Your thread did get me thinking though. There are two other profiles still here that I know of where the members have sadly passed away, and it really upsets me that nothing has been done to remove them. I understand that family members or friends in some cases may not even know that a profile exists for their loved one, therefore it wouldn´t cross their mind to take any action, but the Mods do, and I´m surprised that the site doesn´t remove the profiles of deceased members, within an acceptable time of course.
Hi Tom. I didn´t know that, but really I just couldn´t be bothered to do it, or give a red or green thumb. Anyway, I have no idea who is giving me red thumbs, and from what I see these people don´t actually post in the the thread preferring to give an anonymous red thumb.
I don´t mind at all if somebody disagrees with me, and it would have to be a really abusive comment to make me consider banning them from a thread I posted.
There lies the difference in my mindset and those who give the red thumb to all and sundry methinks.
Oh I know you don´t let it get to you, but really, whoever does this sort of thing is not worth scraping off the bottom of your shoe. I have noticed that there are one or two members who posted regularly in the past, appear only very occasioally now, and I´m wondering if they have found a new hobby which needs a red thumb.
I´m amazed that with three months absence from the site I can accumulate so many red thumbs simply by questioning the validity of this stupid thumb concept in one thread. There is much more to it than meets the eye no?

One of the things on mine was to visit Italy. I´ve just accomplished that, three weeks travelling around the north, but it was a working trip.
Still, I did get to achieve lots of sightseeing during the three weekends there. Wonderful, and I have never tasted such fab pizza and pizza dishes which I normally steer clear of.
I´m not looking for a fan base, but I don´t like being red thumbed for something I post which is not controversial whatsoever. That smacks of of senseless vindictiveness.
Curiously, the EU forum where I have more often posted in the past does not seem to have many green or red thumbs in the posts or threads. Does that suggest anything to you?
So I´ve been away for almost three months and return to a completely new set up here. I think I get the gist of most of the changes, but the thumbs???
I think I´ve posted only two or three times during the past week or so for the first time and received a couple of red thumbs for completely benign posts. I have a feeling they were received because the thread poster to whom I responded in a positive manner is not currently so popular for some unknown reason and being "red thumb stalked". (I was going to post the laughing emoticon after that last sentence, but in fact it´s not really funny at all).
Why are silly, vindictive people being allowed to do this? It makes no sense, and if it continues I for one will just stop posting.
Perhaps the rest of you have got used to this already and are able to ignore it?
I think you´ve got the wrong end of the stick here. My CS account hasn´t been active for three months and has not been hacked. It is my private yahoo account that I had problems with.
A different scenario, but similar in many ways. I teach in an international residential school in Oxford for teenagers from all over the world during the summer, and we sometimes see this attitude, more often with the boys I have to say. However, each student has to pay 50 euros deposit with their school fee which is refunded when they leave, as long as their rooms are not damaged and left in a mess.
If furniture is seriously damaged during their stay, the parents are contacted and asked to pay. (In some cases the student may also be sent home). Many of these kids though come from very wealthy families and have never had to clean up after themselves, so we have to give some leeway in so far as keeping rooms relatively tidy. I maintain a good relationship with the cleaners we employ because they do a fantastic job and I expect the kids to respect that too. Most do.
Most of the do´s and dont´s could easily apply to real life too, so I´m often at a loss as to why many people find it so difficult to apply those behaviours to internet communication. Speaks volumes don´t you think?
I suppose, as in real life, easier said than done.
An extreme case, but still there may be a lesson to be learned.
Many online folk in my opinion are vulnerable and people who exploit that, as in this particular case, or in much seemingly milder scenarios such as online dating sites, can cause untold damage.
Thank you kind Sir! I thought it was you, and married life seems to suit you judging by your new photo. Hugs to both of you.
Good for you. Having three trades is no mean feat and I admire you for that. However, don´t you think that many of the few tradesmen and women who work privately charge inflated fees for their work for people like me who can barely change a light bulb, despite my so called "education", and need their services on a fairly regular basis?
This also results in tradespeople having a bad reputation very often, particularly if their work isn´t up to standard.
Blooming hell, plumbers must make a tidy living with the amount of money they charge!
As a teacher I of course have very strong opinions about education, which I won´t bore you all with, but I do agree with the OP, tradesmen and women are becoming far and few between, and it´s very sad.
Here in Spain there are more active tradesmen and women I believe than in my birthplace the UK.
No amount of academic education can prepare a man or woman for a skilled trade by the way, so I think the connection made between the two in the OP is a tad confusing.
Thanks again Tom as I said earlier in a private email.
I´ve been away for three months, Oxford then Italy working, so I haven´t been here, but yes it´s true, my email account was hacked. However, I think with the password change everything is ok now and my computer has not been infected. I think it happened whilst I was in Italy recently. I had problems with internet access and I could never open my emails for some reason.
"If a man is not a Socialist by the time he is 20 he has no heart. If a man is not a Conservative by the time he is 40 he has no head!
A quote oft attributed to Winston Churchill, but I don´t think he actually said it.
Age does of course bring about changes in personal political ideology, as do experiences in life, but I find that my left wing tendencies remain intact.
This place is a minefield now, I´m totally lost after only 3 months absence!
It is undoubtedly true that overweight people are very often discriminated against at the job interview stage, and studies confirm this.
There are certain jobs where being obese would definitely be a bar in obtaining employment. but it seems that this has now filtered down into mainstream employment, partly I believe because of the media backlash against obesity, but also because potential employers perhaps think about future related health problems.
Personally, I think that at the interview stage, interviewers sometimes opt for the more attractive rather than appropriately qualified. I interview teachers regularly and I must admit there have been times when I´ve been put off a little, not necessarily by weight, but aspects of the physical appearance. However, I don´t let this fleeting thought influence me because at the end of the day there are specific skills required to teach and these are far more important.
I do remember having an obese Maths teacher when I was around 13 years old, and her weight was subjected to ridicule and constant jokes by many of her students. I truly felt sorry for her, but I´m ashamed to say I kept it quiet, and often joined in with the jokes.
I think most of the women here are very independent, or already in a relationship (at least the forum posters) and I really can´t see any of them with the guys here.
