Don Shula 1930-2020...

If you know football, you know Don Shula. He passed away yesterday at the age of 90. Shula was an NFL head coach for 33 years, 26 of those years with the Miami Dolphins.
Don holds a record for being the winningest coach in NFL history.
After retirement he opened a Shula’s Steakhouse restaurant near his home in Miami Lakes.
Influential to South Florida, his face appeared on TV pitching all kinds of products and services from cars, diet systems and Medicare options. Roads are named after this guy!

He adopted Miami and Miami adopted him. Shula, a legend.

My "How close is it to you" blog...

Every night I read the dashboard results for the COVID-19 data in the state of Florida. I'll do a screenshot and check it again in the morning to see changes as the numbers are usually higher. Probably a recount or late entry from the previous day causing the numbers to change.
The website data can do a detailed map by zip code. Because the area where I live has several communities packed in high density, the amount of reported cases are higher here than a few miles away that is used for farming. However, it's many people in a few square miles that concerns me.

It's mandatory to have some form of face covering when in public. Security won't let you into the grocery store without one. Many of the stores have added plastic barriers at the cash registers. Every building entrance and register has 6' markings on the floor as distancing reminders. I went to the Post Office on Saturday and they have a plastic curtain from ceiling to counter all the way across the service area.

I'm still in contact (by phone) with people I used to work with. They probably networked with a few hundred. Last month, I heard the wife of the warehouse supervisor who works in the medical field had tested positive for the virus. I didn't hear any more details on that. An associate who's wife works for an air conditioning service with more than 50 employees is able to do her job from home. She said none of their crew have been directly affected. Another friend's wife is a nurse and she recently tested negative. These are all good signs of containment.

Hearing of one episode about 2 weeks ago that annoyed me... a client went to the showroom without an appointment to see the sales rep to go over her order. When the rep said you need to make an appointment, the woman said it was her only opportunity as her son tested positive and is home under quarantine. The rep was angered and shouted "You tell me this? I've got family with young children at home. No we cannot have a meeting! Please leave." So far the rep is okay and has no symptoms.

The Condo Association president sent out a message (a few weeks ago) that anyone who has the virus MUST notify them and special precautions will be taken to disinfect hand rails, elevator interior and control panels, etc. I'm thinking that information should be noted on the condo bulletin board so the other residents can avoid those units. So far, I've seen no notices.

Do you think I should keep my day job??

I needed a money order yesterday and stopped at the grocery store (in Miami) where they charge 99 cents, unlike the bank that's upwards of $7 and only available during bankers hours.

Setback by the number of people in the store, with the exception of the customer service line holding 6 feet between us, it was nearly impossible to maintain any form of social distancing throughout the store. Side note that explains why Miami has more cases of COVID-19.

I try to be aware of my surroundings and the music on their PA system started playing the song Missing You by John Waite. Okay, so my head was bobbing by the time he got to the chorus and the woman behind me was singing along. I turned to see and it was a young black woman, wearing a surgical mask. I asked if she knew who the singer was and she said "I love this song, but no, who sings it?" I said The British musician John Waite, he played in a band called The Babys. She thanked me for the information and smiled so strongly that her eyes squinted and it crinkled the mask. She asked if I liked her singing and I said it was very good... but the real question came when she said "Do you think I should keep my day job??

Pssst.... they're fake !!

Simple fact... ALL dating sites have scammers with fraudulent profiles.
Some sites have more than others and I believe it's related to management, because they don't have the staff to monitor activity. That means, all of them rely on the members to report scammers or fakes...

In a world of 'self service' they do nothing until someone tells them something is wrong.

Not so much on Connecting Singles, because they often delete bogus profiles within a few days, where other sites only only respond to reports when an administrator gets around to it and that's not too often. Sadly, one of my favorite places had a scammer using a stolen photo of a pornstar that I blogged about her anniversary being there. I must have reported that one 15 times including the site where the photo was stolen from!

I see a new profile appear yesterday that has a warning to women. It's a man in the photo and the profile is warning women of a profile using that photo. Unfortunately, the person trying to be helpful has the wrong gender. They should have created a profile of a man so it comes up on the correct search for women.

Anyway, it's a rainy morning and I have a few minutes to do a Public Service Announcement (PSA) and entertain you with some scammers I have found.

Prone to recovery from COVID-19...

A few weeks ago, I got into a discussion and made some blog comments that hospitals in China and Italy where coronavirus patients in ICU where placed on their stomachs in a face-down prone position instead of the usual position of being slightly propped up were recovering without the use of ventilators.
One theory was to drain fluids in the lungs and another (more importantly) was to relieve pressure on the diaphragm from the effects of gravity.

The technique is called "proning" and it's helped patients suffering from acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) increase the amount of oxygen in their blood without the use of intubation!

I've seen a few articles that confirm this:

Excuses...

Much time is wasted on excuses for the behavior of the president and vice president.
A week later articles are still being published about the disinfectant and bright light news briefing. If it wasn't so stupid, the manufacturers of Lysol wouldn't have issued warnings.
I didn't buy the story about sarcasm. I hope you didn't either.

Pence visited the Mayo clinic Tuesday... a hospital filled with patients affected with COVID-19 and he doesn't wear a mask, against hospital policy. His excuse is he didn't know. Uhh... Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think he's the head of the COVID-19 task force. There is NO ACCEPTABLE EXCUSE for that defiance of rules. You cannot get into the grocery store without a mask, what makes you thing elbow bumping hospital patients and no mask be proper protocol?
Reports were the Clinic informed him (via Twitter) of the mask policy before his arrival.

That leads to another problem as Twitter is NOT an official means for communication to a government official.

Today, he visits the GM facility making ventilators. You better fu*king believe he wore a mask there. It's a clean facility making medical equipment. I'd wager if he didn't the supervisor/manager wouldn't give him the tour of the facility.

But... that's only my opinion, as is this blog.

Breaking news... former national security advisor Michael Flynn who pleaded guilty for lying about his Russia contacts is in the process of total exoneration.

100% accurate coronavirus test...

I clicked on an investment story that CoDiagnostics has a test for coronavirus that's 100% accurate stating their stock will skyrocket. Naturally!
I didn't see it in anything medical (not that I actually researched it) so there's a possibility of a high degree of BS and advertising for the company.

Toilet paper update...

I made it to Walmart this morning 10 minutes after opening to do (what I consider) weekly shopping. Since this area is on a stay-home order, I got a few extra items to minimize my trips out... important things and not 4 bottles of Coke like the last trip!

Expecting the panic buying to be over... I was wrong.
Displays of fruits, vegetables, milk, eggs all looked like normal. This time there were a limited selection of meats, better than the last visit.

It was the paper products aisle that was empty.
I did see one woman with a package of toilet paper so there must have been some stock that got scooped up in 15 minutes of the store opening!

He who procrastinates...

Last month, masks were hard to come by. All the Amazon vendors showed back-orders. Fortunately, I had some saved from renovation work last year and travel. We found a box of 25 surgical masks in the medicine cabinet at my house.
Grocery shopping?
Everyone has some kind of mask. No mask, no entry.
It bothers me to read hospitals are out of masks. N95 and surgical masks are in short supply. As of tonight, I see Amazon has KN95 masks direct from China for $8 each in limited supply and surgical masks around $1 each in quantities of 50.

People are getting masks from somewhere. 30% are the fabric variety, probably home-made. It's been 2-3 weeks since I've seen/read and stories of the clothing companies putting employees back to work making surgical style cloth masks.

I did some research and planned to do some home-made masks. Joanne's Fabrics only had the raw materials and Walmart had 1 sewing machine (in a 30 mile radius) and lots of raw materials. That was more than a week ago.

On my return trip to Walmart, the machine was gone, nearly every bolt of white cotton fabric gone and all the elastic material for straps was gone.

I procrastinated... waited too long.
So ended my plans to make masks from home.

Every night I check the new cases for my county. The numbers are dropping but every few days it spikes. Because it this, I'm expecting the stay home order to be extended for another month.

Procrastinator or not, it's unlike me not to have a backup plan.

I'm thinking...

Soap on a rope...

When I was a kid, we had soap on a rope hanging in the shower. I'm guessing it was English Leather and had a strong 'woody' scent. Not sure where it came from and my guess is a gift. We only had it hanging there for the scent and none of my family actually used the soap. I remember it developed cracks in the surface, probably from the number of times humidity or splashing made the outer surface wet.

Searching for an image for my blog had a definition/example in the Urban Dictionary that the benefit of soap on a rope in prison saved you from having to bend over if you happened to drop the soap.

Flatten the curve...

That's the whole point of isolation. If not, we all will be running around in 'Andromeda Strain' hazmat suits... even if it's a trip to the grocery store.

We need to see less new outbreaks... essentially flatten the curve.
I see Mark made a comment to Jim's blog "Over 1000 cases..." stating Florida changed their peak time. Is this a false report... glitch perhaps?
The prediction was to see more cases, but yesterday the numbers dropped sharply.

Two of the county virus hotspots in the State of Florida are Dade and Broward Counties.
If you are not familiar, Miami is in the middle of Dade county and Fort Lauderdale is in the middle of Broward county.
Highly populated, both cities are famous for tourism and have international airports, seaports for cargo and cruise ships.

Since I own a home in Miami, it's a concern to avoid these areas as I'm now living in Palm Beach county about 50 miles to the north.

We are under a mandatory stay home order.
If this effect is working, then we could expect the projected curve to flatten sooner.
