"WAKE UP PEOPLE, WAKE UP... !!"

That's a quote.. it wasn't me doing the shouting.
I've been listening to a few videos by Doctor Vong and this guy talks about the reality of coronavirus. The death rate will increase. Hospitals are at capacity, medical staff are working without proper protective equipment and are falling to the virus. Doctors are dying.
He states percentages of risk factors for people who are obese, have hypertension, are diabetic and have respiratory disease. Those on ventilators have an average stay of 2 weeks. He gives details how the virus attacks the lungs and his explanations (with diagrams) are very clear and easy to understand.
Worth a listen.

The manufacturing of ventilators...

I've been reading a story about General Motors manufacturing ventilators that were normally built by the medical device company Ventec in Indiana.

GM will be using a 2.6 million square foot facility that normally produced electronics for cars. Repurposing their factory to accomplish this requires totally different techniques than what this factory normally produces.

Work has already started on different levels. There's the engineering and building redesign, procurement of raw materials and assemblies from other sources, hiring and training of over 1,000 employees required to perform the work. More than 700 individual components go into the making of a ventilator. Cloning the Ventec factory may not be possible but tooling, computer software and hardware would most likely be the same.

According to experts, initial runs of prototypes must obtain US Food and Drug Administration approval before they can officially begin production. Best guess is product may not be available until the end of April... that would be after the predicted peak in the New York City outbreak.

It's reported Ventec normally produce 250 units per month and GM is expecting to ramp up to produce 10,000 per month. It's safe to say their facilities would be working 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.

Please hold your comments to the discussion of ventilators. Any comments that are political or point blame will be deleted.

The trouble with chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine...

There are drugs used to treat malaria... chloroquine and its less-toxic cousin hydroxychloroquine that have been around for decades. President Trump named these drugs (in press meetings and Tweets) as promise to treat COVID-19. Federal health officials issued warnings the drugs are NOT approved to fight COVID-19 and could come with serious and harmful side effects.

In the news this morning, already there has been a run on these drugs that have been used to treat people with lupus as it's created a shortage.

A man in Arizona died and his wife is hospitalized after they ingested chloroquine phosphate, a product meant to clean fish tanks. She and her husband got the idea to self-medicate after watching Trump's news conference. When questioned, she knew it wasn't FDA approved, but "Trump kept saying it was basically pretty much a cure."

The trouble with chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine is Trump had no business selling America on false hope.

That's my opinion and your opinion may differ.

On the other hand...

I'm noticeably left-handed. Thankfully, I wasn't hampered growing up left-handed and it's not that I cannot do things with my right hand. My preference is to be left-handed. For the record, I take offense to being called a
'South-Paw' and cannot understand the logic. Perhaps, someone was facing West when they coined that phrase.

I got along in most school sports being left-handed... but they always wanted to assign me on first base, probably because the only left-handed glove owned by the school was for a first baseman.
Archery was fun as the cheap bows were ambidextrous. It's when you progress to a compound bow that you need a left-handed model.

Guitar was a challenge at first. Around 1965, my dad took me to a pawn shop and we paid $17 for a Spanish guitar. It was right handed and I tried... but, I switched the strings to be left-handed and felt natural in doing so. The teacher at the local music store said all the strength was in my left hand, so that's the hand that needed to be in the neck. I should be playing right handed. I gave him the same advice and told him he was playing backwards as his stronger hand should be on the neck. He needed to be playing left-handed. Well, that killed any plans of taking guitar lessons at that music store!

My mother was a seamstress and owned her own shop. More often than not, I was required to work there after school. Her scissors had molded handles that were difficult to hold 'upside-down' so I was forced to cut right handed. Also, she had an industrial steam iron with a hose that connect to a boiler unit. This unit was designed only to be used with the right hand.

When making templates, I'll use my left hand to draw or trace lines. If I'm cutting with a razor knife, I'm left-handed but if the template is to be scissor cut, I'll use my right hand.

I do know of a left-handed guy who learned to play guitar right-handed and he made a comment that he wished he had started out left-handed as playing 'opposite' to what really felt natural had reduced his musical creativity.

Interesting thought. On the other hand... it was only a theory!

J-METAL... Those are guys, really!

I'm on a YouTube journey this afternoon surfing some old bookmarks of Japanese musical groups. The style is Hard Rock Baroque inspired melodies set to (high-speed) shredding guitar licks aka J-METAL. Not your average boy-band!
laugh

This first selection is with the band JUPITER.
On lead guitar is Hizaki. He's the one in full costume that looks like he is on the way to a 17th century ball. His former band VERSAILLES, had 2nd guitarist Teru a few different members, but the same costumes and music. I'm not sure if the bassist is a woman, that would require some research. In both VERSAILLES and JUPITER Hizaki & Teru often play melodic duet solos as part of the show.

Very talented, very different!

cease and desist...

The latest news story says "Trump's campaign is trying to remove a video in which he appears to call the coronavirus a 'hoax,' saying it's misleading"

But... but the words come from his mouth.

Pretty powerful... ain't he?

HTTP Error 503.2 - Service Unavailable...

Now that millions of people are home under lockdown, it's safe to say the internet is on bandwidth overload. Many sites cannot handle the amount of increased traffic. I heard (on local radio) some streaming services (like Netflix) will be limiting/restricting their High Definition signals during peak hours.

I usually obsess on YouTube during the weekends and noticed EVERY video I clicked had an error message that required a second try to get the video to play. High bandwidth problems is suspected.

It took several tries to logon to CS this morning as I received HTTP Error 503.2 - Service Unavailable and a few errors while navigating around the site.

A friend who is a regular at the county park where we fly model aircraft said ALL the parks are now closed. One of the local flying clubs website stated local and regional parks are closed until further notice! The field video camera confirmed no cars in the lot and the airstrip is devoid of pilots.

My plan was to catch a few helicopter flights in the schoolyard, but someone told me under city lockdown I could be jailed and/or fined. No one around me for 200 yards... I promise to wear an N95 mask.

Washing your hands... That's NOT the correct way to do it!

So far, I've seen more than a dozen videos explaining the best way to avoid (any) virus is to frequently wash your hands for at least 20 seconds. Yet, every example has the person opening the faucet, washing then touching the faucet again to shut off the water!

Washing... The most important part of the equation was negated when you touch the faucet you contaminated 20 seconds earlier!

If you don't believe me, try this experiment. Drip something like mustard or ketchup on your fingers and smear it around. Go to the sink and wash. Shut off the water and dry your hands with a towel... inspect the towel. Did some of the mustard from your 'clean hands' make it to the towel?

Paper towels are great as you toss them when you are done. But in a family environment, you've probably got kids and parents sharing the same cloth towel. Pass the virus please...

Somewhere along the way washing the faucet handle/lever should be considered before turning off the water.

Washing your hands... That's the way to do it, if you do it correctly!

Confrontation in aisle nine...

Reading that grocery stores all have limited operating hours, the local 24 hour Walmart is down to 7am - 8:30pm so my plan of beating the crowds and shopping at 4am didn't work out.

I was there a few minutes before 7am and a line of 30 people with carts were already waiting out front. We entered the store at a normal pace and all looked normal.

No empty bins on the breads, cookies and groceries.
Knowing what happened on previous visits, I headed straight for the paper goods for paper plates and tissues.

On the way, I glanced over to the wall where the meats are... sorry, where the meats were. It looked like they did when the last hurricane came through. Empty.

Workers were opening boxes of frozen fish and filling island refrigeration units.

I've been busy the last few weeks with projects and this morning was my first attempt at weekly shopping.

I veered over to the meats and the only thing there was lean ground chicken that I routinely buy weekly. Lucky for me and it became a priority as people were picking so fast, If I waited more than a minute, all would be gone.

Back toward the paper products I could hear a fight had broken out. Two women were hoarding as they collectively had more than 9 twelve-packs of toilet tissue in their carts and it was causing trouble. Another woman said "Lady, how could you possibly need 60 rolls of toilet paper. Leave some for the others!"

I'm faulting the store on this for not putting up signs limiting purchases of 2 packs.

I got paper plates, bowls and tissues without having to fight for it.

While I did read about shortages of eggs and milk, it wasn't an issue at that store.

Lysol products or rubbing alcohol? Forgetaboutit...
