Those who doubt the efficacy of shutdowns and mandated social distancing in slowing the spread of Covid-19 may want to look at the grim lesson learned by Sweden. Or more specifically, by its elderly, a large number of whom critics say died needlessly thanks in part to the government’s approach to the pandemic. Gyms, schools, restaurants and shops have stayed open throughout the country, which has been good for the economy but bad for longevity: Sweden’s death rate is about 32 per 100,000, compared with 24 in the U.S., the global epicenter, and roughly 9 in Denmark, which took a much stricter approach.

Dr. Anthony Fauci repeatedly contradicted his boss, President Donald Trump, in warning against many more unnecessary deaths on top of the 81,000 Americans already lost to the pandemic (though he conceded the true number is likely higher). While Trump has said more American dead is a price he is willing to pay for “ reopening” the economy, his adviser was decidedly less fatalistic in virtual testimony before the Senate Tuesday. Fauci cautioned against loosening restrictions in states where infection rates are still high, especially in a nation that remains woefully unprepared for the necessary testing and tracing. He also dressed down Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky when the Republican insisted kids return to school in the fall. Fauci pointed to a new, deadly syndrome affecting children that may be tied to Covid-19.

WASHINGTON — The whistle-blower who was ousted as the head of a federal medical research agency charged on Thursday that top Trump administration officials failed to heed his early warnings to stock up on masks and other supplies to combat the coronavirus, and that Americans died as a result.

“Lives were endangered, and I believe lives were lost,” Dr. Rick Bright, who was removed in April as the director of the Department of Health and Human Services’s Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority, told a House subcommittee as he warned, “The window is closing to address this pandemic.”

Over nearly four hours of testimony, Dr. Bright told lawmakers that the outbreak would “get worse and be prolonged” if the United States did not swiftly develop a national testing strategy. He also predicted vaccine shortages if the administration did not draft a distribution plan now.

After holding back for nearly a month, President Trump; his health secretary, Alex M. Azar II; and his trade adviser, Peter Navarro, all hit back at Dr. Bright, in a three-pronged assault that elevated the confrontation. Mr. Trump dismissed Dr. Bright as a “disgruntled employee” and Mr. Navarro, whom Mr. Bright considered an ally in the White House, called him a “deserter in the war on the China virus.” Mr. Azar insisted officials followed through on the scientist’s ideas.

“Everything he was complaining about was achieved,” Mr. Azar told reporters as he and Mr. Trump were preparing to board the presidential helicopter to leave for Allentown, Pa. “What he talked about was done. He said he talked about the need for respirators. We procured respirators at the president’s direction. He said we need a Manhattan Project on a vaccine. We had a Manhattan Project.”

“This is like someone who was in choir trying to say he was a soloist back then,” Mr. Azar continued, adding: “His allegations do not hold water. They do not hold water.”

The president joined in. “I don’t know him,” Mr. Trump said. “I never met him. I don’t want to meet him but I watched him, and he looks like an angry, disgruntled employee who, frankly, according to some people, didn’t do a very good job.”

Dr. Bright’s testimony was the first time a federal scientist — or any federal official — had gone before Congress and openly accused the administration of endangering American lives by bungling its coronavirus response. He said Americans would face “the darkest winter in modern history” if the administration did not move quickly, as people become “restless” to leave their homes.

That came two days after Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, the government’s top infectious disease expert, contradicted Mr. Trump by warning of “needless suffering and death” if states reopened too quickly, amounting to a one-two punch for the administration.

Mr. Azar and Dr. Bright’s immediate supervisor at the Department of Health and Human Services, Robert Kadlec, declined invitations to testify, as did Mr. Navarro. Representative Anna G. Eshoo, Democrat of California, who led the hearing, said later in an interview that she did not intend to subpoena them.

“I don’t want to go down any legal rabbit holes,” Ms. Eshoo said, adding that she found Dr. Bright’s testimony “quite chilling.”

please do not inject disinfectant, no matter what the idiot-in-chief says.

Dr. Leana Wen, the former Baltimore health commissioner, agreed that nobody should be ingesting bleach or other disinfectants.
"I don't think there's any need to hedge on that," she said. "Do not try these things at home, and follow your doctor's advice and follow good public health guidance."

WASHINGTON — A federal judge overseeing the criminal case of President Trump’s former national security adviser Michael T. Flynn opened the door late Tuesday for legal experts and other outside parties to oppose the Justice Department’s motion to drop the case, suggesting he has at least some skepticism about the government’s argument that Mr. Flynn should never have been charged.

In a brief order, Judge Emmet G. Sullivan of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia said he would set a schedule for outside parties to present arguments about the government’s request to dismiss the case. He did not directly address the Justice Department’s motion to drop the charge, but legal experts said he appeared open to considering not only the department’s arguments but also those who have challenged its move as politically motivated.

The judge’s order is the latest twist in a high-profile criminal case that has provoked widespread criticism of Attorney General William P. Barr and has renewed questions about political influence over the Justice Department. In an extraordinary move last week, federal prosecutors asked Judge Sullivan to throw out their case against Mr. Flynn for lying to F.B.I. agents, two and a half years after he pleaded guilty to a felony charge of making false statements to federal authorities.

None of the line prosecutors who worked on the case signed the motion, and one withdrew from the case. Mr. Trump has repeatedly called for Mr. Flynn’s exoneration, saying he was the victim of biased and vindictive F.B.I. agents.

Judge Sullivan has some limited discretion to decide whether to accept the Justice Department’s decision to abandon the case. In announcing his intention to consider briefs from outsiders, known as amicus curiae, or “friend of the court,” the judge raised fears among Mr. Flynn’s allies that he may not yet be in the clear.

“The judge can pretty much do anything he wants,” said Michael Ledeen, a historian and friend who co-wrote Mr. Flynn’s 2016 book “The Field of Fight.” Everyone in Mr. Flynn’s circle, he said, is waiting “till the judge rules.”

Mr. Flynn’s legal team immediately objected to Judge Sullivan’s decision. The lawyers were likely worried that the judge was inviting a wide-ranging, public discussion of whether the Justice Department was inventing legal arguments in order to help one of the president’s allies, legal experts said.

“This court has consistently — on twenty-four (24) previous occasions — summarily refused to permit any third party to inject themselves or their views into this case,” the defense said in a motion filed after the judge’s order. “Only the Department of Justice and the defense can be heard.”

The defense also sought to play down the potential contributions of outsiders. “Former prosecutors are all free to submit opinion pieces to assorted media outlets — as many have already done — but this court is not a forum for their alleged special interest,” Mr. Flynn’s lawyers wrote.

The case against Mr. Flynn was one of the first brought by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, as part of his investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election. It revolved around Mr. Flynn’s phone calls with Sergey I. Kislyak, then the Russian ambassador to the United States, in the weeks before Mr. Trump took office.

Dr. Anthony Fauci has been a beacon in many ways, and he had some fine moments during Tuesday’s hearing.

Tuesday’s Senate Health Committee hearing on the coronavirus response was gavelled into session by video from Tennessee, where the chairman, Lamar Alexander, was ensconced in a room with his dog, who was sleeping on a couch in the background. All four witnesses—Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases; Robert Redfield, the head of the Centers for Disease Control; Stephen Hahn, the Food and Drug Administration commissioner; and Brett Giroir, an admiral who leads the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps—were joining by video. Moreover, all the witnesses except for Giroir were undergoing some form of self-isolation as a result of contact with people who had tested positive for the virus—part of a frantic effort in the past few days to contain an outbreak that included Vice-President Mike Pence’s press secretary. Some of the other senators were participating remotely, too, and those who were present in the hearing room sat at least six feet apart. Most had worn masks when they entered, but were told that they could take them off once they were seated and speaking.

The physical absence of participants was not the only reason, however, that much of the hearing had a strangely detached air; the mood reflected a lack of consistent focus in the federal government’s response to the crisis. There are many examples of heroism in hospitals, where health-care workers have exemplified the best of the country’s spirit, and in essential businesses such as grocery stores and in warehouses, too. And yet it can seem that the power people have is inversely proportional to their sense of urgency; in those terms, Donald Trump is the pinnacle of negligence, mismanagement, and freelance destructiveness, but he is not alone. Last week, in The New Yorker, David Quammen provided a devastating look at what one of his sources called a “lack of imagination” in the C.D.C. and similar institutions. At the hearing, Redfield, who often conveyed the sense that the issue at hand was somebody else’s problem, did nothing to undermine that view.

Fauci has been a beacon in many ways, and he had some fine moments during the hearing. One came when Rand Paul complained that people were worrying too much about reopening, for which he partly blamed the media; as Paul saw it, children are not dying of COVID-19 and so reopening schools should be a simple matter. (Children, of course, are not the only people in school buildings and on buses—or in their homes.) Paul admonished Fauci, saying that he was not the “end all,” and that he needed to be “a little bit humble.” Fauci responded with an eloquent reminder that true humility includes an acknowledgment of what we do not know. He noted that there is now clinical evidence of an inflammatory syndrome that is associated with COVID-19, which appears to have killed at least three children in New York City, perhaps more. “I think we better be careful that we’re not cavalier,” Fauci told him.

In more than one of his exchanges with the senators, Fauci also acknowledged that rushing to reopen too soon could be a very bad idea, and possibly lead to “little spikes that turn into outbreaks,” and noted that “there is a real risk that you will trigger an outbreak that you may not be able to control.” He pointed to the White House’s guidelines for “Opening Up America Again,” which were issued in April, and advised against jumping over any of the benchmarks it offers for doing so, such as a “downward trajectory of documented cases within a 14-day period.”

A banana duct-taped to a wall sold for $120,000 at Miami's Art Basel this week — it may be the most talked-about artwork at this year's event. Two of the three editions have been sold, according to Perrotin, the contemporary art gallery behind the work. The last one is expected to go for $150,000.

The controversial piece, called "The Comedian," was created by Maurizio Cattelan, an Italian artist who had also entertained art lovers from around the globe in 2017 with his "America" 18-carat-gold toilet. However, the $6-million throne was stolen from England's Blenheim Palace over the summer.

Emmanuel Perrotin, the gallery founder, told CBS News that Maurizio's work is not just about objects, but about how objects move through the world.

"Whether affixed to the wall of an art fair booth or displayed on the cover of the New York Post, his work forces us to question how value is placed on material goods," he said.

He added that "the spectacle is as much a part of the work as the banana."

Some critics argue this piece is a perfect representation of what the art world has become with its gaping wealth inequalities. Others, however, chose not to go as deep and appreciate the simplicity of the art piece.

The artist first came up with the idea a year ago. He "was thinking of a sculpture that was shaped like a banana," according to a press statement from Perrotin.

"Every time he traveled, he brought a banana with him and hung it in his hotel room to find inspiration. He made several models: first in resin, then in bronze and in painted bronze (before) finally coming back to the initial idea of a real banana."

The artist reported no clear instructions for buyers on whether the bananas start to decompose. The Miami Herald reported that owners can replace the banana, as needed.

Chores day & eagle momma with baby.

Today was a day that I accomplished a lot of chores to do.
Included in that was installing new spark plugs, laundry and food shopping at 3 different places.
I also did a lot of walking in woods taking pictures of various birds, including a yellow shafted flicker;

a catbird;

and a bird I am unfamiliar with.

It had a light yellow chest and gray wings. It was bigger than a goldfinch or a yellow flicker and the chest was not as bright yellow. It was about the size of a cardinal. I never saw it before. It had a mate, as did the other 2 birds. In fact the catbirds were not shy at all about making whoopie today, all 2 seconds of it.

The photographic catch of the day, however, was when I stopped by the bald eagle's nest.
When I got there, the female was feeding the eaglet, who was deep down in the nest.
Momma was beak down in the nest and buns up, not an ideal pose.
However, later, the mother hopped onto a branch and I got 3/4 full frame shots of her cleaning her
beak against the branch, and then upright looking at me and looking to the left and looking to the right.
After that I got full frame shots of her in the upper right hand corner of the photo and the baby in the lower left corner in the nest. I'll be adding those shots to the many, that I sell. I'm sure customers will love them.

On the way home to celebrate I bought a box of all natural frozen fruit bar popsicles.
The top half is dipped in dark chocolate.
Somehow :winking: on the drive home, one of those popsicles worked it's way out of the box and the bag and made it to my hand while I was driving. Obviously, it was anxious to be eated. So, I had to oblige.

The rest went into the freezer when I got home for other days.

So, I hope you had a good day too.

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—In a test result that he called “a tremendous relief,” the Attorney General, Bill Barr, has tested negative for integrity, Barr confirmed on Friday.

Barr submitted to the test after learning that he had come into contact with career Justice Department prosecutors who were found to be integrity carriers.

“When I learned that there were still people at the Justice Department with integrity, I was understandably furious,” Barr told reporters. “I told them to go home at once.”

Barr said that he was putting into place new protocols that would require Justice Department employees to be tested for integrity before entering the building.

“I thought that anyone with integrity had already left the Justice Department, but apparently I was mistaken,” he said. “It’s better to be safe than sorry.”

Although he was elated to learn that he had tested negative for integrity, Barr said that he shuddered to think how close he came to contracting the dreaded virtue.

“Having integrity would have made it impossible for me to work for President Trump,” he said.

Whether it was the untruthful interpretation of Mueller's report, pressuring prosecutors, or

Let’s play Mad Libs. Fill in the blanks:

What would attorney general William Barr have done if [name of prominent Trump enemy] had lied to the FBI about [contact with representative of hostile foreign power] in which they discussed [giving benefit to hostile foreign power] and then got caught and pleaded guilty, twice?

Let’s try: What if Michael Cohen lied to the FBI about talking to the North Korean ambassador about allowing nuclear testing and then got caught and pleaded guilty, twice?

or

What if Adam Schiff lied to the FBI about talking to the Iranian Ambassador about getting Congress to lift economic sanctions and then got caught and pleaded guilty, twice?

or

What if George Conway lied to the FBI about talking to Nicolás Maduro, the Venezuelan president, about invasion plans he saw on Kelly Anne Conway’s laptop and then got caught and pleaded guilty, twice?

Lying to the FBI is a crime. There is a materiality requirement; if you tell the FBI that you had cornflakes for breakfast when you had raisin bran, they can’t indict you. But as a lawyer who has argued materiality in a number of cases, I can tell you that beyond what kind of cereal you have, there is very little that is not material. A lie is material not only if it is relevant to the investigation but if the FBI says the lie caused the FBI to affect the course or focus of its investigation or fail to pursue certain lines of inquiry.

So let’s return to our Mad Libs response. Plainly, the crime of lying to the FBI about contact with a hostile foreign power is potentially serious. The lie could be interposed to hide an improper relationship with the foreign power, i.e., espionage or, as the US president would call it with respect to his own FBI, treason. That is not to say that Michael Flynn committed treason, but when someone lies about contact with the Russian Ambassador, that would certainly create in the reasonably curious investigator a thought that there could be national security implications here. As Judge Emmet
Sullivan said, “Arguably, you sold your country out.”

Barr asserted that the government already had the transcript of the conversation so there was no reason to interview him. They knew he had talked to the Russian Ambassador and what was said — basically, don’t worry about responding to Obama’s throwing out of Russian diplomats (or spies undercover) because when we come into office, we’ll fix it all up.

But the FBI had been investigating Russian interference in the Trump campaign. And here is the incoming National Security Advisor telling the Russian Ambassador that good times are gonna roll for Russia when the Trump team arrives. On whose behalf was Flynn offering the goodies? Was he acting on his own? Unlikely. Was he instructed by President-elect Trump to let the Russian ambassador know? And if so, why? Was there, to use a phrase, a quid pro quo? Pretty good questions.

For Barr to claim there was no need to ask whether there was contact because the government already knew, is to limit the purpose of the interview to a single question. Not only does the FBI ask questions it knows the answer to all the time, such a question would be a logical entry point to the questions of why this was occurring when there was still a president in the Oval Office whose policies were entitled not to be undermined by the incoming administration.

Comedic Actor Jerry Stiller dies at 92 of 'natural causes'

(CNN)Actor and comedian Jerry Stiller has died due to natural causes, his son, actor Ben Stiller said in a tweet. He was 92.
"He was a great dad and grandfather, and the most dedicated husband to Anne for about 62 years. He will be greatly missed. Love you Dad," the tweet read.

Perhaps by most, Jerry Stiller was known for his role as Frank Costanza in the show "Seinfeld" and about a decade later, as Arthur Spooner in the sitcom, "The King of Queens."

Stiller had lost his wife, Anne Meara, in 2015. The two met in a New York casting call in 1953 and a few short years later became the timeless "Stiller & Meara" comedy team -- making their name in the 1960s with frequent performances on variety shows, including the "The Ed Sullivan Show."

The native New Yorker caught the comedy bug early, inspired while growing up by listening to comedian Eddie Cantor on Sunday nights on the radio.
Stiller told ClevelandSeniors.com in 2010 that he identified with Cantor because he "came from the Lower East Side where I was brought up."

"He was Jewish," Stiller said. "He worked his way up from being a singing waiter. He had such joy, such energy."

The eldest of three children, Stiller watched his father struggle as an unemployed bus driver and used Hollywood as an escape since the family moved around quite a bit.
"I was brought up with Andy Hardy and The Hardy family with Judge Hardy and Aunt Millie upstairs," he said of the then popular Andy Hardy movie series starring Mickey Rooney. "I wanted to be them. I wanted to live in Harpersfield, USA."

After a stint in the Army, Stiller worked various jobs including washing windows, selling ice cream and driving a bus.

He also studied drama at Syracuse University and launched his acting career.
It was that craft which introduced him to his lifelong love as he and Meara met at an agent's office and married soon after.

While she wanted to focus on dramatic acting, Stiller convinced his wife they would make a great comedic team which they formed after both being members of the Compass Players comedy troupe.
By the 1960s the pair had found fame appearing on "The Ed Sullivan Show" where their jokes about their differences -- him a short, Jewish man and her a tall, Irish Catholic woman -- were a hit.

In Meara Stiller found his soulmate.
"Our marriage has lasted because we have the same feelings of insecurity about being an actor," he told the New York Daily News in 2012. "We needed stability."
They waited over a decade before they had children, son Ben and daughter Amy, who followed their parents into show business.

Becoming parents didn't stop Stiller and Meara from being on the road pursuing their craft.
"We schlepped them from place to place. We took them to Vegas or Los Angeles," Stiller told ClevelandSeniors.com. "We'd be performing with (Gladys Knight) and they'd be in the pool swimming with The Pips."

The couple decided to break up their act and pursue their individual careers in 1970.
"I love Anne, but if I had depended on her in my professional life," he told People magazine in 1977. "I would have lost her as a wife. We felt like two guys."

Stiller found work on television including celebrity games shows and "The Love Boat" as well as on Broadway.
But it was being cast as the curmudgeon Frank Costanza on "Seinfeld," which premiered in 1989 on NBC, that made him a superstar.

And to think, it only took Trump 3 years to destroy the good economy he inherited.
