Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear (D) announced in a press conference Sunday that 273 new cases of COVID-19 had emerged, the highest Beshear has announced so far. This brings the current state case count to 2,960, per the Kentucky Department of Health. And 148 fatalities have been reported.

In response to this figure, Beshear determined that the state will not reopen economic sectors or relax restrictions until there is a downward trajectory of reported cases for 14 days, in accordance with White House guidelines.

“We’re still in the midst of the fight,” Beshear said.

This comes after protests surged in Frankfort last week against Beshear’s restrictions, disrupting an evening news conference. The Lexington Herald-Leader noted that about 100 Kentuckians joined the protest, arguing that businesses needed to reopen after more than 500,000 Kentuckians filed for unemployment in March.

Local outlets report that at least 13 percent, or roughly 385, of COVID-19 cases have been recorded in nursing home residents. Beshear also told reporters Sunday that 33 additional residents have tested positive for the virus, as well as eight nursing home staffers.

Beshear noted that the state will need to increase testing and obtain more personal protective equipment (PPE) even if case numbers decline.

This follows news that Pastor Jack Roberts of the Maryville Baptist Church in Louisville filed a lawsuit against Beshear, claiming that enforcing a stay-at-home order on Easter violates the constitutional right to religious freedom. The church argued for Kentucky to allow in-person Christian services provided social distancing and hygienic rules are observed.

Beshear’s office put out a press release stating that anyone attending an in-person religious service during the coronavirus pandemic will be notified that it is a misdemeanor violation.

Total U.S. Deaths Double From Week Earlier (4 p.m. NY)

New U.S. cases increased 5.6% from Saturday, according to data collected by Johns Hopkins University and Bloomberg News. That’s higher than the average daily increase of 4.8% over the past week.

New York had the largest number of confirmed cases after a 3% increase from the same time the previous day. North Dakota experienced a 20% increase. Eight states had fewer than 1,000 cases.

Total U.S. deaths rose 12% to 41,379, which is more than double the total a week ago, according to the data.

Deaths rose 21% in Minnesota, 20% in Pennsylvania and more than 10% in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Illinois, Maryland, Virginia, Rhode Island, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Maine, West Virginia and Washington, D.C.

Deaths are a lot easier to determine than infections, especially since adequate testing is unavailable and most people have not been tested. Indeed, some tests have proven to be faulty. While some areas have seen a reduction in deaths recently, other areas have seen an increase and the net this week was an increase.

It would be prudent to not ease back on social distancing for the near future, especially since we do not yet know who is infected.

Jersey Jim's Crop Report

The official nickname for New Jersey is......The Garden State.

Two weeks ago I planted 10 different types of vegetable or herb seeds
and I also planted blue morning glory seeds.
I'm happy to report, that radishes, spinach and leaf lettuce are up in abundance.

The others - not yet.

The Monday after Easter (1 week ago) I stopped by the grocery store to buy a week's worth of food.
I also do that with a fruit & vegetable market each week.
Apparently, the grocery store was expecting lots of flower sales for Easter and it didn't happen.
So, they had plenty of pots of either tulips (red, red & white tipped, or yellow) and pots of blue hyacinth. The Tulips had 4 or 5 bulbs in each pot and the hyacinths had 3 larger bulbs in each pot.
They were on clearance at 3 pots for $3. I bought 12 pots, 6 of the hyacinths and 6 of the red & white tulips.

When I got home, I walked a pot of hyacinths over to my neighbors across the street and a pot of
hyacinths to my neighbor on my left. The neighbor on my right didn't want any.
I brought one pot of hyacinths inside, and they made the house smell great for the past week.

Today I planted everything I had left. 9 hyacinth bulbs and 24 red & white tipped tulip bulbs.
The bigger hyacinth flower stalks were drooping. So, I had to put them on stem support.

Don't worry. I think they will make it. The tulips are in on either side of my sidewalk leading to the front door. The last 3 bulbs on both sides are hyacinths and I planted the remainder in front of 2 big spruce trees that I have.

Can you dig it ? I certainly did.....33 times today.

The 9th Planet in our solar system

No, not Pluto. That's not a planet. Yeah, I know. It WAS classified as such, not long ago.
However, Pluto turns out to be little more than a relatively small ice ball and there's thousands of those in our solar system. In reality, there's are only 8 actual planet's......... that we've seen.
Regardless, it seems, that there is actually a 9th planet in our solar system.
But it is way out there. It may have been a lot closer long ago, but was kicked out of
the solar system for smoking. Just kidding.
But, it may have been kicked out to the edge by a slingshot effect
from a gravitational interaction with our largest planet.
Some believe, that interaction actually saved Earth from destruction.
It may have altered the movements of our largest planet to miss a collision course with our Earth.
Regardless, we now postulate the existence of this 9th planet in a similar way that we
postulated the existence of the 7th & 8th planets long ago. By the effect on other orbits.
Some big effects.

In a White House press briefing on Tuesday, President Trump criticized the World Health Organization's coronavirus response and threatened to cut its funding.

President Trump assailed the World Health Organization on Tuesday, and indicated that he will consider putting a hold on funding it.

In a media briefing at the White House, Trump twice stated that the United States funds the majority of the organization's budget. According to the WHO, the United States provided 14.67% of its funding in 2018-2019.

The WHO has been the most prominent global organization leading the strategy to stem the spread of the novel coronavirus.

But on Tuesday, Trump criticized the WHO as slow to respond to the crisis, and repeatedly said the organization has been "China-centric." He complained that the WHO "receives vast amounts of money from the United States" and that the organization "called it wrong."

"They could have called it months earlier," he said. "They would have known and they should have known and they probably did not. So we'll be looking into that very carefully."

Trump at one point said "we're gonna put a hold on money spent to the WHO," before backtracking later in the briefing and saying "we're going to take a look at it."

Trump was asked what he meant by calling the WHO "China-centric."

"I don't know, they seem to come down on the side of China," Trump replied. "'Don't close your borders to China,' they don't report what's really going on. They didn't see it, and yet they were there, they didn't see what was going on in Wuhan. They didn't see it. How do you not see it? They didn't report it. They must have seen it, but they didn't report it."

The WHO has opposed travel bans, mainly due to the economic damage they cause.

The U.S. is the single largest contributor to the WHO. Its assessed contribution is 22% of the total members' assessed contributions. The U.S. pays considerably more than the assessed contributions in additional voluntary contributions. That 22% assessed contribution has been stable for many years, but the voluntary contributions have fluctuated depending on health crises and U.S. political priorities.

The WHO is funded not only by nations, but also nonprofit organizations, foundations, companies, universities and governmental alliances. After the U.S., the next three largest WHO funders in 2018-2019 were the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the GAVI Alliance, and the United Kingdom.

A Risky procedure saved Arizona's only ventilated Covid-19 patient

When nothing else works for Covid-19, as a last resort, there is extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy. It rescued a man in Arizona. The only one in the state, who was on a ventilator.

PHOENIX — A Phoenix man is the first in Arizona to survive COVID-19 through a rare form of treatment called extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy.

Enes Dedic, 53, was on the brink of death with a ventilator until his doctors at HonorHealth used ECMO as a last resort. Dedic is among the first U.S. COVID-19 patients to survive the disease by using the treatment and is among around 10 worldwide.

ECMO works by helping oxygenate blood outside the body so blood doesn't need to transfer through damaged or filled lungs. Instead, tubes carry blood from the body to an external artificial lung that removes carbon dioxide and adds oxygen, at which point an artificial heart pumps the blood back into the body.

It's a last hope treatment, as the mortality rate on ECMO is around 40% — "extraordinarily high for almost any medical procedure" — according to Dedic's doctors.

After 10 days in a medical coma on ECMO, Dedic woke up responsive and soon was able to FaceTime his wife.

"I can't even express myself," his wife Olivera Dedic said. "I was jumping through the roof when I heard that they woke him up and he's doing better."

Doctor used therapy as a last resort: 'ECMO or death for him'

After returning from travel overseas, Enes Dedic spent a few weeks at home in the Deer Valley area of Phoenix battling fevers, chills, aches and nausea.

He first checked into HonorHealth's Deer Valley Medical Center on March 15 and quickly deteriorated. He was intubated and transferred to the HonorHealth John C. Lincoln Medical Center in Phoenix for increased mechanical ventilation.

A team of doctors tried everything to save him, said Dr. Anselmo Garcia, a pulmonologist and critical care physician. Enes Dedic was treated with all the potential drugs used for COVID-19 including hydrochloroquine, azithromycin, Kaletra, Actemra, antibiotics and anti-inflammatories.

None of these worked.

As a last resort, doctors turned to ECMO, said Dr. Robert Riley, chief of cardiothoracic surgery at HonorHealth. Riley performed the surgical procedure for ECMO.

"At that point, it was either ECMO or death for him," Dr. Ace Ovil, a trauma and clinical care surgeon, said. "Even though ECMO is a risky procedure and has some associated potential risks, we felt like we needed to give him a fighting chance of surviving his disease."

The procedure allowed Enes Dedic's lungs to rest while the machine worked for them.

Riley said it was uncertain whether this would work. At the beginning of COVID-19, early evidence suggested ECMO was not a useful treatment and that its complications outweighed potential benefits. But given this patient's critical situation, the benefits were worth the risks, Riley said.

“In the bottom of my heart I was thinking that he’s a strong man, he’s going to survive," Olivera Dedic said. "But at the same time, I was scared with all of this technology, everything, machines, ventilators and everything they have to do for him, all those medications. I was very, very scared what was going to happen.”

Enes Dedic was evaluated each day for oxygen levels, X-rays, lab values and organ damage. He steadily improved every day, Garcia said.

After 10 days in a coma while treated with ECMO, doctors woke him up and he was quickly responsive.

Charles Calvin, of New Chicago, Ind., Told WGN 9 that he had withdrawn $ 200 from his checking account at an ATM last weekend.

He looked down at his receipt and noticed a few more zeros than usual. He told the station that his bank account balance was $ 8.2 million.
