Drive-out tags...

When you buy a vehicle at a dealer, they often issue a temporary tag until they can get the permanent tag issued. For years, I've heard people reference this as a 'paper tag'
The paper tag is usually good for 2-3 weeks giving enough time for the dealership to process the official tag or sticker to validate the new or existing tag.
Today, I found there is an official name for the paper tag... it's called a DRIVE-OUT TAG.

In the news, a man and woman in Memphis, Tennessee were arrested for creating fake drive-out tags. Police found 236 of them!

Memphis Police Department found printers, tags, plastic laminator machine, a rifle, handgun, bag of marijuana, digital scales.

Each were charged with 236 counts of forging evidence of title assignments.
Among that, a list of other charges ranging to drug paraphernalia and possession of a weapon.

The Shelby County Fugitive Task Force passed the tip to the Memphis Police Department who made the search and arrests.

Used to use the pink slip, copy of transfer filed with DOT. Taped it folded in the windshield. Then they went to temporary cardboard license plates they nail you $5 for. Same if getting a new car I assume.
Now to renew, they have machines in grocery stores etc that charge you $3. We always called those years things stickers. Now everyone calls them tabs.
Used to be better with pink slips. Fill the form out, never register, drive around with it in window til it turned yellow. laugh Cops saw it and never stopped you. I know some switch temp plates to other cars.
I like a bit of freedom and wild west, had my won incidents...
but question: is that not like driving without insurance Orzzz?
Orzzz, I remember vehicle registrations in Florida were small, about the size of a 3x5 card. We were allowed to keep them in the glove box.
I always felt we were being ripped off when the dealer would charge $250 to transfer a tag to a new vehicle.

I renewed my sticker last month online for $39 plus a service charge of $2.50
The local grocery store has machines for registration renewal, but the one near me was out-of-order.
Trust me on this...
You don't want to be without insurance in Florida.
On this we agree..drinking
All my cars and trucks are insured. I was talking about the good old days when we ran ties til they hit the third cords and put in fifty cents worth of gas to cruise all evening.laugh
My farm truck is $42 for two years, cant drive it in January. Cars are $75 for plates. Just get hit with taxes and fees when new title.
We liked Colorado. Drive an old junker, plates were rated by year...$6.50 for my 48 Dodge. Buy a brand new car, $450 or more for plates. They were kind. Cant afford a new car, pay little. Can afford a new car, then pay.
Here in Oklahoma you must have your bill of sale for the paper tag to be valid.
