Found out rough age of my turtle

Embedded image from another site

Well today the lady who gave my family 3 turtles came into the restaurant. When she gave them to us I forgot to ask their ages so just took a guess at them being in their teens. A couple of years ago 2 of them died. When I saw her today I took the opportunity to ask the age of the remaining turtle. She told me that her sister had had the turtles first and then passed them onto her mother who in turn passed them onto her until my family were given them nearly 10 years ago. After speaking with her mother who also came into the restaurant they couldn't remember the exact age but put the age at somewhere in it's 20s. She told me that she had expected all 3 turtles to have died by now and was amazed that one has lived so long. My understanding is that some turtle species can live for up to 50 years. The species I've got is from what I've been told is a Red eared Slider.

Yep, it looks like a red eared slider.
I see them all summer.
Thanks for the confirmation Jim. From what I was told this afternoon this turtle's previous owners got bored with them. I think some people take on pets like this not realising just how long lived they can be. This turtle is anything but boring it knows when it's going to be fed and sometimes the cats will be fascinated by it and sit and watch it swimming about in it's tank.
Be careful in handling them. They can harbour salmonella.
Do you ever let him roam out of the tank ?
Don't worry Jim I know about the salmonella. I bought a special hand cleanser from a shop that specializes in these type of pets and I also thoroughly wash my hands when I handle it. When I bought the food the first time the shop keepers gave me advice on handling them and told me about the salmonella. When I clean out the tank yes I let him roam. The tank I originally got him and his 2 deceased companions in was smaller than the one he's in now, it was half the size of his current tank. A facebook friend of mine got a couple of turtles as a gift from her boyfriend recently, baby turtles. I asked her if she was aware of how long they lived for and the care they needed. She had done her research. Must admit my research came after I got the turtles but I wouldn't be without the one I have now. I won't replace it though if I out live it and by that I'm thinking of the animal. It simply wouldn't be fair to get such a long lived animal knowing that it would probably out live me.
I googled it and it says they can live to be 30 years old.

Maybe whoever told me 50 years was thinking of tortoises. Well this one is old as it's somewhere in it's 20s. My friend has a different species and her research has said that her species lives up to 15 years. Whoever does consider getting a creature like this as a pet needs to consider that pets like this do live a long time. I spend at least a couple of hours cleaning out it's tank. Also as I discovered not every pet shop will stock the food these creatures eat. I'm lucky I have one within walking distance of my home.
