Location Location Location.

This an old & well worn phrase in the UK normally to do with property , it should really be finished with Cost Cost Cost because that's what it's referring to in reality, the premise is the same house will have a widely varying price tag depending on where it is, as an example a two bedroom flat in Knightsbridge London could cost between 3 & 8 million pounds ( 5 to 13 million dollars US ) whereas a couple of hundred miles away a similar flat in Hull NE. England would work out around £150,000 ( $252,000 ) , here in Spain property prices have done nothing but go down since the economy took a nosedive & that same flat in Motril would come in at a little less than the one in Hull, it's a shame I can't buy a place in Motril & stick it in Knightsbridge laugh That would do me for the rest of my life beer This led me to wonder about prices in other parts of the world, what better way to find out than blog about it on CS & get members to fill in the gaps of my property price knowledge dunno cheers

By the way if you fancy an all singing all dancing house in Knightsbridge you'd better have around a £100 million handy uh oh wow doh

Of course this not only applies to property, a couple of years ago I needed a steering part for my car, here they quoted €60 whereas a firm in China had one €5, that's a big difference for it's location doh laugh
zman in uk now the young cannot get on property ladder at all. We will go back to being a rental country again. Maggie Thatcher started the home buying bug but that bug is long gone now. We the so called babyboomers help our kids get on property ladder. kids stay at home longer too. Me I am glad I am at my age these days. I just while away my days with ice cream watching wet suits surf the wavesrolling on the floor laughing rolling on the floor laughing
ZMan;
head banger Sounds to me! You should move out of that country. To a much cheaper country....comfort
Red, the English Channel being that much warmer than the North Sea will give you a long viewing season as well wow laugh rolling on the floor laughing

I'm saddened by UK house prices, as you say the young have no chance of getting started on the ladder at those prices doh
Hmmnnn Z a 10 million dollar house in the ocean view Of Sausalito, California, go north by about 40 miles and still in the same ocean view and it dives into half of the price.

Take that to the most beautiful view in the Philippines or Mexico and it is $40 thousand dollars..

Same thing in Sydney, Karabilli price is ten times that of the darling harbor location, yet it is not even a mile apart.

Now as for the rest of the world, I know that it works the same way.

The value of any property is factored by the location, weather, and the neighborhood, as well as the view..
angel I did that 11 years ago dancing just means I'll never be able to go back to the UK as things stand, but then if they have a few more years of bad weather the situation may change in my favour & they'll all want to move here cool laugh rolling on the floor laughing wine
Zman;
.............giggle
LJ, I can well believe it but the example you quote of less than a mile apart can hardly be put down to weather variation laugh rolling on the floor laughing wine
Now zman do the men wear wet suits in spainlaugh grin
Sorry if you want to be back in uk but cant get back. that is sad but there again you never know what is around corner you could win lottery or meet rich young bird or sumthinteddybear
Well not all of them has to do with weather as much as just the distance Z.

You see, the closer you are in the CENTER OF THE CITY San, Francisco, the higher the price. And it is all because of the time to get there.

Inherently and very innate on the traffic factor. The rich and elite refuse every means to widen Hwy 101, which is jammed by about unspeakable parking lot of cars, getting to the city in the morning and going home in the evening. So where it takes about 1 hour per 20 miles northbound after 5 o'clock, the further you are, the long it takes to reach your home north.

Now when it is no traffic with only 50 miles, it will take me half hour to drive in and out. Which I used to do when I live up in the Northbay, but go to work in the city three times a week.

Weather has nothing indeed to do with it. Same thing in Sydney and Philippines example. I just took it because I thought international wise, there is a difference in the way it is priced per weather. Then maybe I am wrong.
Red, no I wouldn't want to go back, I have all I need here, well that said we could use some rain cool laugh

They only wear suits here in winter, mind we don't normally get huge waves here anyway so it's mainly windsurfing in winter.
LJ, it occurs to me having spent many years in both the building & car industries that all this has only in part to do with location, travel times etc & a lot to with a show of wealth.
applause glad your happy zman I thought at first you wanted back to uk. I tried a few places when I retired but in the summer it was always too hot for me. In Winter here I just put more clothes on but in hot country once clothes off that's it isn't it.moping grin grin
Red, that's why everywhere here has a swimming pool grin that way if friends pop over on a hot afternoon beer can be served in the pool beer laugh But I know some don't like the heat, personally it's those long cold & dark days I can't take doh
Indeed Z. It looks that way, and the closer you are on the houses of George Lucas, (Marin), Francis Ford Coppola, Montana, and all the prominent millionaires, the more expensive the value of your property is.
got to go z wave not many about for Friday night I am away for a beercheers
Red, you never stay anywhere long enough to get used to it rolling on the floor laughing but here that's why property near the coast is more expensive, much cooler in summer & warmer in winter grin
LJ, odd as it may seem we have the same situation here, just along the coast a town where quite a few Hollywood actors have bought houses, it was just a fishing village originally & no different to say 50 others along the coast, but it became "trendy" & now some places go for over 10 million Euros, it's not near any capital type city & has exactly the same view & weather as all the others towns around it confused doh
Another example of cost over value is watches, in the 70's I slashed out on a Breighling chronograph, it never kept time properly, constantly went wrong & has sat in draw unused for about 30 years, I'm told it's worth about £500 if I had it repaired, compare that to the fake Rolex I bought on the beach here for €12, keeps perfect time, which is value & which is just for show dunno
Z we are getting so detailed on this now, I tell you a true to life story. You know in the old days of US dollar value against any currency of the world. It used to be cheaper for me to come and shop in Europe circa 80 and buy a first class ticket which my husband so gladly accommodated and shopped in France and Italy. Only England I didn't buy much because it was always higher by bit from us. I still shopped at Harrods.

Now comes my story. I bought a channel and Louis Vitton bag in Italy in the early part of 80s.

I saw the price on the Vintage website for $5,000.00 dollars and I must have paid only $300 hundred dollars then. Exact same bag, it even says, what year it was made. (Used). The argument is because the material and the design is not ever made again. Nor will it ever be. San Francisco Levis, just paid $200,000. ON A PAIR OF JEANS MADE IN THE 1800.

My children already have names of them on each of these bags, which at my current life, now, don't mean a thing. Simplicity is my life now Z. Thanks to the economic bubble.
Zman I was born in Westbourne park Road in Kensington. London which you will know well. Nowadays its nigh impossible to purchase a property there and 'out of reach' to rent in that area. Knightsbridge and other areas have risen and are crazy. My mother lives now near Ealing Abbey and those little Cottages [2 storey] but gorgeous have still held their value. I see the property prices go up in UK again.... same here in Ireland. Dublin in particular is seeing a resurgence of the mad property bubble which is stopping couples from getting on the property ladder.South Dublin has always been more expensive than the north of the City, it is a simple case of snobbery and the houses and surrounding areas on the northside are lovely, well built houses but these things are to do with Status... ridiculous! dunno Yes ! the incessant rain and grey skies are things you have probably forgotten, I can understand your wanting to return to UK but I wonder... could you stand the incessant rain and torrential downpours ? Global warming has had a significant impact on both our countries weather.
I would love to move to a sunnier climate... alas, I have some health issues and am near hospitals here [sounds very geriatric] but its the truth. ~ However , If I thought I could rent an apartment for a reasonable price in say, Spain, I would love to spend the Winter months there. The lack of sun is depressing.
There are great bargains to be had in Wales and up towards Manchester but again, its a matter of location, location, location.sad flower
LJ, yes that's exactly what I'm talking about, your example of bags is a good one, a $20 bag will do an equally good job, if it breaks or is stolen just buy a new one, but we as humans seem to have a need not only to compete as in your blog but show to the world how well we've done in that competition.
The ultimate and inane effect of VANITY Z, which I must admit been there for a while. And active victim of the world's commercialism, Z. Rolex in Switzerland in the 80s was just 25G now up to 100G?

And Oprah buying a %$40,000 dollars Hermes bag Z?

Tell me about it. At least I didn't do it to compete Z, even as it seems natural, just the urge of wanting the best. Yet today, what a joke Z with the 7 billion starving many..

I apologize to no one Z but myself and yet quite a lesson learned..As I am now living dirt poor..
GG, I wouldn't want to go back, health may one day force me to as not being a pensioner yet I'm not included in the Spanish health service, fortunately I wouldn't want to live in Knightsbridge anyway laugh If you're thinking of renting here in winter I wouldn't let worries over health bother you too much, firstly your health is likely to be far better than enduring all that cold & rain & secondly I have examples of people getting treatment here where they were refused in the UK on the grounds of costs verses gain, one friend with cancer had his life extended by 4 years here, cost 90k which the NHS refused to pay for, so the Spanish hospital did the operation & sent then the bill laugh rolling on the floor laughing
Welcome to my world GG. Yes, my ex husband of 28 years who dearly and deeply spoiled me, (my children are all know even today)didn't ever question then, and perhaps even now, if we were together, (no way) but memories are so rightfully serving us GG if only to know the difference then.

The good thing about it, is that all my suits and clothes are still like new even after 35 years and I can still fit in them so good, and I can't sell it as there is hardly anyone who will fit them..other than me.

We should create a blog about "stupid bought out commercialism" GG yet the truth is, they are truly of good quality and craft is of prime design..

Sorry Z.
Hi Z
The situation is very much the same here. In an old area like Parow you can pick up an old 2 bedroom house needing lot's of attention for around R750,000 (US$75,000) while a newer 3 bedroom job will set you back R2,000,000 (US$200,000). If you go 3 or 4 km from there to Plattekloof you will get the same house for triple the price. In Clifton you can expect to pay R80,000,000 (US$8,000,000) for it.doh
cheers wave
LJ, I think with age comes the realisation that some of these designer items are just not worth the money & as with my watch sometimes they're not even good quality, when I bought that watch I gave my Timex to my father, he was too magnetic to wear a watch but kept that old Timex in his pocket for must have been 40 years & it was still working after he died.
Cat, wow those are big numbers for a country with a population in such diverse financial situations uh oh but interesting that "property snobbery" seems to affected most of the world doh beer
Yes Z, I am with all humility, agreeing with you. Quite a discrepancy in the paid out commercialism of this material induced world. Time and our counsel of times help us see the frivolity of it all.

I am now teaching my children to cope out themselves with this high trend values Z. And they are listening..

Thanks to my experience..

Great blog Z.
Lou, I only did the commuting thing for a few years & not very far at that, drove me mad, on the London underground it's not even worth looking out of the windows as the tunnels all look the same laugh it was such a relief when we popped out into the open near home cool
Zman thanks for that information on Spain and the health service.I am probably being over cautious. I think that living in a sunny climate is defintely better for the health of mind , body and spirit, nothing like a Blue sky to lift my spirits and make me sing. I may investigate... a friend of mine is spending 6months in Malta now to avoid the winter when she gets very depressed.
LJ, don't get me wrong I'm all for good quality, like you I bought some decent, but not designer clothes years ago & they're still in good condition, getting into them is another story uh oh laugh rolling on the floor laughing
GG, I've seen with my own eyes people arrive her in a wheelchair crippled with arthritis, joint problems etc & a couple of months later seen them join the walking group I used to belong to, there is a salt water lake near Malaga famous for it's restorative powers & people flock to live near it but in truth I think anywhere round here has the same effect, even from personal knowledge when I left the UK if sat crossed on the floor for a couple of minutes that was it stuck in position, now 11 years on I can do it no problem thumbs up
Zman I totally agree and Ive googled and researched it , it would seem that both types of Arthritis seem to do better in warm weather. Also i believe what is good for the mind, relaxing warm weather, healing water, lack of traffic fumes, the muscles being relaxed and not tensed up against cold and damp has to be good for the whole immune system. Ireland is a very damp country, the air is damp. I find the winters here now are tiresome and the rain and dark skies are depressing... alot of people are taking to Spain from Ireland and UK. It just takes a leap of faith to actually rent for Winter. I wouldnot cry for this country now as it is public knowledge that the country is finished fiscally.
GG, I think Ireland & Spain are in the same financial life raft, the ship having sunk long ago laugh but at least here as you say we have the sun, and the scenery is pretty good as well thumbs up
laugh Zman, that's true, but as you know, tiz better to be living in a poor country where you have the Sun, sand and scenery and people are in a brighter mood...here the Vista is the postbox with GasBills to heat the house, even tonight its freezing, more like winter, I have the Gas heating on... full. I have a wooly jumper on and still cold, so relax, have a drink, enjoy your evening and know you did the right thing...wine drinking thumbs up
I'm not sure how poor the Spanish actually are, word has it there's a lot of dosh under mattresses here as born out by when they changed to the Euro they ran Mercedes short of new cars rather than change their money at a bank uh oh wow laugh
Just maybe because I am living a bit closer to the fish factory and my house is fairly old it is worth less than half of the houses in the new development just about 300 meters from here. dunno
Ek, that could work in your favour, were the fish factory to close you might suddenly be worth a fortune laugh wine
GG a product of eating only vegetables and fruits and exercise very extensibly my dear GG.

Plus I think from my genes my parents has more Spanish Italian blood than the original Malay Filipino and my Grand mother from my mom was pure Spaniard with blue eyes and white skin. Passed away at 103 years old taking care of children three days before she died and her memory and attention was in perfect shape.

She wouldn't eat a vegetable unless it is harvested in her organic garden. No fish unless jumping and alive when cooked and raised her own cow and pig for food.

But anyways. Yes, I have not changed at all with my size and I am so glad and happy GG.

My love right now was a professional athlete with no drugs and just as healthy (14 years younger than me) and coach even better now on the abs and the rips...
