I know I'm right. My friends say so.

Social media has given us voices that go far, far beyond people we’ve met, beyond our homes and offices. We chatter a lot, we make friends, get quite addicted to counting our friends (never mind the quality, feel the width). Some of my Twitter contacts have over quarter of a million followers, and follow as many back. They take this stuff seriously.

The big turning point was when we learned our virtual voice was HUGE . We can rock governments, we can direct policy, we can change the very world. Yes! You and me!

WOW. The POWER!

Whoa. Hang on. One of my virtual friends has a different take on events? UNFRIEND (or UNFOLLOW) Oh, but hang on, that reduces my friends / follower count. Hmmm.

idea I’ll just block their notifications from my FB timeline, or mute the hashtags they use on Twitter when they are being boring. Sorted!

So now I can look smugly down my timelines, and see nothing that disagrees with my views on life.

The worrying little flaw in this is that it doesn’t seem to occur to anybody that they have filtered out conflicting opinions. They believe they share the views of every one of their hundreds of virtual friends. I’ve noticed the growing trend on FB and Twitter, bet you have too, towards being dogmatic, arrogant, intolerant and completely bigoted. I turned off notifications just today from a woman who has her head twisted so far to the left it’s a wonder she doesn’t fall down stairs.

So thank you, bloggers of CS, for your huge range of blogs. We may ignore the ones that don’t look, from the titles, as if they will fit our view on life, but we can’t ignore that other people, however misguided roll eyes do have another view on life. In time this could become one of the few places left on social media where that still happens. That would be ironic - that we lot, with our strong views on any and everything, are the last people in the world who even realize there are other points of view.

That woman I blocked today on FB - she’s a Scottish writer, fiercely campaigning for Independence for Scotland, AND believes that we will be welcomed back into the EU when we are. I’ve argued, in the past (yes, I know, you’re surprised, Biff arguing?) and been shouted down with extreme arrogance. I don’t want to unfriend because we handful of Scottish writers, when we aren’t wasting time on politics, do support each other.

So she probably believes she dazzled and converted me with her brilliance and has the support of every one of her hundreds of FB friends. Just as I believe I have the support of mine.

I wonder how many of us are completely wrong. And if it even matters? Except that we are all becoming very sure of ourselves and very intolerant of what we think is the tiny minority who disagree.
Yeah well not all my blogs can be light-hearted. And this really intrigued me.

Didn't expect this many comments, tbh, and some even relevant grin

Back shortly with coffee. Talk among yourselves.

I do of course realize that a whole bunch of bloggers already ignored the whole blog just because it was me who posted it. Someday may try the experiment of two or three people posting exactly the same blog and see how many bloggers even notice it has been duplicated professor
I like drumsticks myself. smitten
Have a felling this will be forever known as The Chicken Blog laugh I'll have chips with mine thanks professor
We are all different, we are all of different and varied cultures, beliefs, ways of life, etc. etc;. The good part is that we are all free to express what we feel, how we feel and hope that understanding is fostered.

In this blog land, there are so many topics, so many varieties of opinions, disagree and agree, what a beautiful way of sharing. It is like going to a library and you can choose which and what to read to fit your wants and likes.wave
The joys of the interwebz typing

I watched a debate between two Fb friends the other evening. One is fiercely pro gun ownership and the other, furiously against. The debate was articulate and very interesting but I'm sure both left their keyboards feeling a bit miffed. As heated as it got, neither blocked nor "unfriended" the other, it was quite refreshing.

I think some of us are more vocal about our views....and don't we all think we're right? laugh
So if I say you are wrong does that mean I'm not your friend?dunno laugh
Unlao

Share the link plz?
IBA, sorry, I can't, it was an interaction on Facebook
Unlao

Seems like a nice one to witness....I will call it a miss! :(
It was fascinating, IBA. No nastiness, no trolling, simply two completely different opinions debated reasonably and respectfully
Unlao

That is how it should be, all have right to have there respective perspectives!
well biff............I for one, like your blogs,...as there is a lot of truth in what you write........be it serious or funny...........all in all , a clever person........just thought i,d let you know.......as i see it.........pete.
hug hug cheers
IBA, tolerance is not exactly a strong point in human beings
LJ, I completely agree and have had some lively debates on here. I used to have lively debates on the other sites as well, and enjoy them very much. This blog was because I've noticed there is no longer debate on the other sites. There is just certainty, and almost irrational indignation when that certainty is challenged.

wave 2 years ago CS was the last place I expected interesting debate. It is now becoming the only place to find it!
Hi, Uptall. Er - what? confused
Unlaoised, I've watched some good arguments, and I've jumped in before now and really enjoyed the give and take. In fact, not that long ago with the same writer. Debating, holding a point of view and being ready to defend it is brilliant, I love arguing yay

Um, that should be, I love arguing with someone who listens and tries to demolish my argument. Not with someone making sweeping statements which don't actually relate to the subject in hand. confused

Yes we all think we're right! This blog is more about noticing those - and as of today that includes me - who are 'cleaning up' our social media by just sweeping other points of view out of sight.

Your pro-gun friend could tidy up her timeline until there is no-one on there who is anti-gun. She could then come to believe that anyone who is anti-gun is incapable of mastering anything as complicated as social media because they are so stupid ... rational discussions between rational people holding opposite points of view are the basics of tolerance. Refusing to accept there could be a rational opposition is frightening. To my mind.
Tru, every now and then you say something nice! Thank you laugh
Ocee, wow, I should have known there'd be names for them. This is a brilliant comment, because I completely agree with it.

yay
Pat, you're making me feel guilty. I am close to irrational about fracking, have researched it quite a lot, and want to shout at people who haven't read it up properly rolling on the floor laughing You finding people are being thoroughly stubborn on the subject, I-know-what-I-know-I-don't-need-to-know-more?

And er, which side are you on? Apparently from the non-Bong side, got that bit.
