BebeII: GB made mistakes to be sure-he gave us our 15th government department, bailed out car companies, and did nothing about illegal aliens who cost us billions per year, but he wasn't the worst president by any means.

Well according to the majority of the American people he was. Just with things like sending in troops to war when they weren't ready and didn't have body armor, killing the surplus, awarding no-bid contracts to haliburton, and the gross mishandling of Katrina in which he promoted a friend who was vastly unqualified.

Jenea: So then, should we not pay taxes and have everybody fend for themselves? My taxes went up and I don't mind paying taxes, I will pay any amount of tax that is going to be used to make the country better because it is going to go to programs that are important.
That's a stunning statement. Why not cut out the middleman in the form of a government beauracracy and just let people keep more of their own money and use it for their own betterment or charity?

I believe the republicans tried a version of that with the tax cuts. They said tax cuts will create jobs and it will tricle down when in fact it did not. Jobs were outsourced. Bottomline, taxes are needed.

The "majority" of Americans get their news from a very biased media. The troops were ready and the body armor meme is an old and tired one. The armor that worked best had just been designed and created and production was consequently slow. Armor also slows a soldier down-the body plates they wear are 40 pounds and make it difficult to move, which can also lead to being killed. The enemy also learns to shoot around the armor, like in the head, neck and leg regions. As for Katrina, we expect states to do the first response to any disaster, then the federal government steps in. There was plenty of warning about the storm and no reason for people not to have been evacuated-New Orleans sits 3 feet BELOW sea level and has for centuries. Nagin and the city council are to blame for not using their resources to move people out of harm's way. The corruption in Louisiana and N.O. is legendary and longstanding-money sent to them by the federal gov. for levee building and flood control was instead spent on political pet projects.

I never said that no taxes should be paid, only that the tax burden slows the economy and gives government power over us. The tax cuts were made to give people back their money, period. Jobs are outsourced for a variety of reasons-one of them being that American corporations have a higher tax burden than even many European countries.

The troops were not redy and sone had no armor at all and didn't even have armored humvees. I have a pic from a friend holding up a sign that says, "Will work for body armor". Difficult to move? Should we just send them out naked and hope for the best? New Orleans did issue an evacuation, my aunt came to stay with me because of the evacuation. New Orleans is a vastly poor city and everyone did not have the means to leave. I think Geraldo aired a special on FOX that showed people trapped on a bridge trying to leave. He was crying and asking why the people were still stuck there. Information about the levees were sent to Bush and he ignored them. Furthermore, promoting a friend who is vastly unqualified screws the situation up even more.

The more money you make, the more taxes you have to pay. That's the way it's been.

The Levees were screwed up 20 years previous by the Army Corps Of Engineers!
The crooked DEM Machine in New Orleans caused those Evacuation-Problems!
As for the Levees, the Sheet-Piles were not driven deep enough!frustrated

If by ready you mean no appropriate body armor or humvees then they were just swell. I mean I put a high price on lives and sending people to a BS was when they are not well equipped is just ridiculous.

On a side note, I do enjoy this convo we're having. However, it's 6:15 a.m. here and I have not been to bed yet. Horrible weather mixed with the flu has caused me to sleep all day and be up all night. Anyhow, is it ok if we continue this convo in pm's?

Jenea, we all put a high priority on our soldiers lives and I just explained why body armor isn't the end-all, be-all of force protection. I hope your flu flies away and you get some sleep.

Jenea....yes some units did leave the US without armored HumVees or without body armor. One of the main routes into Iraq takes the units thru Kuwiat. As they go thru Kuwait, several things happen.

1) They are several stocking bases in Kuwait to bring the unit's equipment to its authorized and is issued to them.

2) Out going units, turn in their HumVees and other equipment in Kuwait, so that incoming units could use them.

National Guard units would sometime get caught in the middle of this. National Guards units have their own equipment here in the
US, sometime it was shipped to middle east following their deployment. So they might be in country while it caught up with them.

There was a shortage of armored HumVee at the beginning. But new armoring contracts changed that over time.

lights: Yeah Stress,

And you never responded to my post about the Acorn election fraud that probably gave him the 2.92%.

BTW, you like to refer a lot to this 'new' world and 'new' way of things. Sorry to have to tell you that Socialism, huge deficit spending, unions, relying on the government to solve all your problems is not new Stress, it is just new to you.

Well lights, both sides cheat. The FBI could not find anything that would connect Acorn and voter fraud. It was just some stupid mistakes by individuals who wanted to earn extra money by getting more registered voters. I would not rather get into who cheats and how they cheat because it's pretty much been going of for a long time. It's who can cheat better and get away with it...like with the election of 2000 and 2004.

The new world is not here btw...I'm not promoting Socialism, just elements of it.

Everybody has a lot to learn about the world and themselves. It's just not 18-29 year olds btw...That's why we are here, to live and learn.
Be cool lights. I'm done with this thread.

Please tell me how MY tax dollar is making MY country and MYSELF better by sending a crew of people 400 miles into space to change a battery and clean a lens of a telescope. Just how has that tax dollar enhanced and enriched my life? Is the Hubble Telescope going to pay into MY Social Security, MY Medicare? Is it going to put food on MY table, pay for MY bills? That's one hell of a important program, I just don't quite understand what that telescope is doing for ME. Perhaps you can enlighten me.grin
