I think some people HAVE shown insight into this issue rob and have made what they (and I) feel are useful comments.
At the very least, some have shown empathy towards what seems to be the endless plight of these people and are also questioning the reluctance of the major powers to put in place the processes and structures that would see them prosper once and for all.
In discussing this, it puts a spotlight on the governments of these countries and draws attention to the fact that while corruption, greed and the lust for power is rife within them, no amount of charity and aid is ever going to solve the problem.
And this is precisely the reason why people are donation-weary.

They have the experience of a lack of food by karma
Places Afghanistan, they have the experience of being killed and so forth because the have in the past created the karma
To think its possible to stop famine by throwing money at the karmas of suffering people to my mind plain stupid
