robplum: All the South China Sea is not and has never been part of China, is gross dishonesty to claim it is or has bee, Likewise Tibet had never ever been part of China, and before the clowns jump in, yes China invaded Tibet a few times but eventually withdrew its invading forces.
Actually China built the great wall of china to keep the Tibetans out of china and the wall therefore draw a line displaying the extent of its western boarders.

South China Sea is not part of china as the dishonest lying communist scumbags now attempt to claim. China had armed forces erect a marker off Brunei proclaiming the extent of its territory, as the crow flies the marker is approximately 1,853 miles north of Darwin Australia.

but listen is all for the oil under that sea

China is cruising for a bruising, events that will without doubt in my mind spill lots of blood not only in Pacific, Indian Ocean all of Asia but also all the way into Europe

MADDOG69: They can watch all they want. China's in the middle of building the New Silk Road. It's a concept that also involves Sea routes. Securing the South China Sea is the start of the Southern Sea route.

It's all power play and showing off its world's climbing dominance.

Yap, should it tests it's provocative acts, and once aggression is established and none pats attention, of course, it marks it's power play as a mouse ignored by the cats if you ask me. ..

Obama's administration is very vigilant I suppose, as the retired bases in the Philippines are reactivated.

It isn't showing off. China's companies, both private and public have poured more concrete in 3 years than the US in the entire 20th century.

MADDOG69: lol. The Great Wall is a few 1,000 miles North of Tibet. You mean the Mongols?

Anyway the Yuan and Qing involved Tibet within it's borders. That's several centuries, but not concurrent.

The Mongol Genghis Khan invaded China and Tibet, he went onto become Emperor of China, Khan installed Buddhism over the Bon religion in Tibet, but that doesn't mean Tibet was then part of China, it was not, and never has been

It was... for centuries at a time. The last time, All the way to the 20th century. And then reconquered in the 1950s. The Ming Dyunasty before was smaller and didn't have Tibet within it;s borders. The Yuan before the Ming, did though.

"Chinese" history is interesting though insofar as it contains the history of the various powers and people... Manchu, Mongol and Han. This last century has shown the last and final rise of the Han over all other previous groups. You can;t disqualify 'Chinese' as being 'Mongol' because most people are Han, and Mongols are a minority and intricate part of Chinese common history.

And Russian, remember Russia and China fought a war over Mongolia.

I'm trying to explain in English (not double Dutch) it could be said for a time, both Tibet and China were part of Mongolia, as a Mongolian ruled both china and Tibet, so therefore Tibet was part of china, it never has been. Likewise china is saying all the south china sea has always belonged to china, because at a time, a long long time ago, china sailed ships over it, china also sailed to India, the middle east and Africa.

Bill bloody Clinton agreed with china that world maps should display Tibet as part of china, me thinks, Clinton should have stuck with monica lewinsky the whole time while taking up space in the white house, far more constructive

Being the second richest country by GDP second to USA with 5.6 trillion, it probably wants to show to the world that it has both monetary and military power to be dominant. That's more like an stance it wants to convey.

lindsyjones: Can you build an island?

An island in the eyes of the law?
Can you build your own island? Certainly! But it won't be the same as a "normal" island -- not in the eyes of international law, anyway.

The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), to which China and all of the South China Sea claimant states are party, draws a sharp distinction between naturally formed and artificial islands.

UNCLOS is explicit in stating that man-made structures do not possess the status of islands, have no territorial waters of their own and their presence does not impact on the delimitation of maritime boundaries.

While land reclamation may indeed be possible around features that already qualify as islands, simply building up a feature so that it is elevated above the high tide mark will not transform it into a "real" island.

Any opinion?

What is the real deal here?

Maybe the Chineese dudes are playing with the rest of the world here. I believe they want to build something to compete with the Palm Islands, Palm Jumeirah and Palm Jebel Ali, on the coast of Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

As at November 2014, only Palm Jumeirah has been completed. This island takes the form of a palm tree, topped by a crescent. When complete, Palm Jebel Ali will take a similar shape;

When complete, both islands will be host to a large number of residential, leisure and entertainment centres and will add a very large area of non-public beaches to the city of Dubai.

Rumor has it, they are going to film the sequel to a popular 1967 U.S.A. drama film and title it 'Bonnie and Clyde on Ski Jets.'

Coney Island in NYC was built in exactly the same way in the 1800s. Hauled out trash and rocks dumped then housed on and the dumping continued. Eventually folks started paving it over and labeling streets. So yes, legal and with precedent.

Not second richest. Richest. Currency exchange rates skew the figures. I just see a lot of butt hurt people sometimes deciding to ignore the real size of the economy. And the real size of the economy is the Purchasing Power parity. The Chinese Economy has been the the largest now since back in 2014. And everyday the gap gets bigger at an astonishing rate.

Economic might is truly measured in how much stuff you can make and services provide.

Thats about 18 trillion $.

Obama seems to have quite good job at lowering the US debit in china

China’s holdings of U.S. debt hit an all-time high of $1.317 trillion last November but has been in decline ever since.

China has nearly $4 trillion in foreign currency reserves, the largest reserve account in the world.

Number three holder, Belgium, increased from a position of $362 billion to $364 billion. Brazil increased its holdings from $250 billion to $253 billion. Even Russia held more U.S. debt, rising from a small $111 billion to $113 billion in June.

The U.S. debt was more than $14.3 trillion during the so-called debt crisis of 2011, when the level of borrowing reached its statutory limit and the president warned of a potential default if the cap wasn't raised.

About 32 cents for every dollar of U.S. debt, or $4.6 trillion, is owned by the federal government in trust funds, for Social Security and other programs such as retirement accounts

The largest portion of U.S. debt, 68 cents for every dollar or about $10 trillion, is owned by individual investors, corporations, state and local governments and, yes, even foreign governments such as China that hold Treasury bills, notes and bonds.

Foreign governments hold about 46 percent of all U.S. debt held by the public, more than $4.5 trillion. The largest foreign holder of U.S. debt is China, which owns more about $1.2 trillion in bills, notes and bonds, according to the Treasury.

The U.S. debt to China is $1.224 trillion, as of February 2015.

China owns roughly one-fifth of the $6.1 trillion held by foreign countries. The rest of the $18 trillion debt is owned by either the American people, or by the U.S. government itself.

Historically, the US public debt as a share of GDP has increased during wars and recessions, and subsequently declined. The ratio of debt to GDP may decrease as a result of a government surplus or due to growth of GDP and inflation. For example, debt held by the public as a share of GDP peaked just after World War II (113% of GDP in 1945), but then fell over the following 35 years.

On March 6, 2015, debt held by the public had reached $13.08 trillion or about 74% of Q4 2014 GDP.

Japan-China switch is backed by larger trends, and changes in the way Beijing manages its foreign reserves. Treasury data show that over the past year, China's U.S. debt holdings dropped by $49.2 billion, while Japan's increased by $13.6 billion.

The largest foreign holders of U.S. debt were Mainland China (7.2%) and Japan (7.0%).

building islands is nice.
an islands needs defending.
from other people and from water.
See the world islands. they are almost gone.
the palmtree needs a dike too.
The maldives are almost drowning.

So the island survival of years depends on maintenance too.
the same as an offshore drill platform.
The investment of the island is economical balanced.

But china abides foremost the rule that the victor writes the history.

China is increasingly defending against civil war.
they need to show themselves that they are strong or they loose

China is playing a very dangerous game, they are reliant on the fact that the majority of citizens don't follow or understand world politics. They also feed distortions of true facts, given the impression that China has genuine ownership of the spratly islands, but the younger generation are wiser than given credit, they are reading reports from outside China, and questioning the validity of such a claim.

The problem is that the older generations believe the government and they control their children, so nothing will happen to stop this action, until this young generation come of age and they run the country.

lindsyjones: Thanks for joining Derty. . I think it's more of a substantial claim for Natural resources.

China doesn't need any more land. But for its own greed, I'm sure it works for them.

I'm curious as to what extent it can create.

Lindsy,, yes, there's a lot of black gold,, and to add more, it's a stragetic point ,,

riz, this will be a hard battle, i mean not in arms for the moment, but in diplomacy, for the side of the Philippines, we can trace the presence of chinese long time before the spaniards arrived, there's are big names now controlling the economy if not the market in the Phils, and to note that the ancestors of the clan of Conjuanco, a great grands of the present President is still alive and in China,,
as much as i can follow, i think there were errors from the part of the FILIPINO government at the moment of the signing of this particular treaty, thus of which gave China the ligitimacy to claim such territorial supremacy, action of course questioned by the counties involved,,

2girlsnocup: Technically, they are doing nothing wrong, as they're building on land ruled by their country in order to build an airstrip and a base.

But, I find it strange the other countries are worried about the airstrip, because if China does build an airstrip on Fiery Cross Reef, it would put Beijing on a par with Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia and Vietnam who all have such capability in the Spratlys.

2girls,, hi, you've written "ruled" but this time they are claiming ownership and souvereignity over those islands, it's a very complicated history that should be taken diplomatically in a good form,, so risky as there are more countries which oppose & question it's legality, smells the gunpowder ,,
